Hi Ian. If you believe in the BTI modelling why are you not investing in more "income factory/greg the dividend monster style stocks like BDCs? I like this BTI model best aswell. Most of my portfolio is high yielding. Best wishes Ian. Great content as always
@ppcianАй бұрын
This is a great question. On a go-forward basis, I can see myself moving in that direction. I do not believe in selling, so I'm pivoting with new funds more towards those types of investments. It's a slow process since I only have so much net new capital to deploy. Because BTI has come down a bit, I'm just going to focus on that a bit longer. (My huge additions to MO and BTI over the last year have been my version of Income Factory.) I do like investing in what I know, and I am unfamiliar with the Income Factory-style investments (like BDCs, CEFs), so that's part of it too. I'm just gravitating towards what I know, and over-allocating to BTI and other similar stocks. But, yes, I will be moving over towards more Income Factory-style investments as the years pass. Great question! (Disc: I'm long BTI and MO)

Awesome Video as always! But - inflation? What will 60k in fiat dollars be worth in 10 or 20 yrs?
@ppcianАй бұрын
That is a valid point. I briefly discuss this, I think, later in the video. The video does not take into account inflation nor taxes. The investor can always geo-arbitrage if needed. In scenarios 1a and 1b, retirement is now, so inflation is less of an issue. And, the dividends will continue to grow, so there's some inflation protection. In scenarios 2a and 2b, since they are in the future and the model targets $5k/month, inflation becomes more of an issue. I think the solution is to keep a very tight control on cost of living and consider all alternatives (such as geo arbitrage). But, it's not so easy these days, since inflation has been on the uptick. Wishing you all the best!

I wouldn't start transitioning into higher yield until you are close to drawdown, TBH. Both work, but strictly dividends removes the emotions behind selling either in the red or during a bull run.

Brick by brick! I had to do lump sums in the model to make it easy to illustrate. However, most of us (myself included) don't do too much lump sum investing. We just dollar cost average in over time. The key, however, is that the true yield on cost still works. Time + reinvestment + dividend growth is key. Wishing you all the greatest!
@xaldath4265Ай бұрын
Please don't get discouraged, but do realize those three funds are actually pretty low yielding funds. VOO is the entire S&P500, including all the non-dividend stocks. DGRO and VIG are both focused on dividend growth. All three are likely to have more total return on long timelines, but won't have much of that return come from the dividends. I don't know your timeline, but sticking to those seems perfectly fine to me if you have 10+ years to go. Then, if you feel the need to focus on yield, you can reallocate those funds into higher yield(likely lower growth). There is no perfect investment, but you seem to be focused in a quality direction.
@metalheadami123Ай бұрын
@@xaldath4265 yes very good points. I’m 29 so I have a long time before I’m retired. I’m more focused on growing wealth over income right now so some dividend growth stocks are very attractive to me so I’ll have a high yield on cost in 35 years

6:00 The thing about this is lack of diversification. If you're putting $700k into a single stock (BTI), that is awfully risky. The industry is also poised not to grow. Rough rule of thumb is that any single position in your portfolio should only be max 5-10% weight. That means you'd need to have about $7-14 million to deploy in order to comfortably put $700k into BTI and diversify away most of the idiosyncratic risks. Thanks so much for sharing, and for being the empirical test! This is awesome. Please do comment back. Let's hope for a friendly climate. This strategy takes time. Wishing you all the greatest!!!

r u angry ? lol Steve martin said "how to make a million dollars and never pay taxes...first get a million dollars, then say 'I forgot'" Still lookin for that million $
@jonnes__4657Ай бұрын
🗽 Correct, but in 15 years the $5000 is not worth the same (buying power is reducing). .
@ppcianАй бұрын
This is a very important point. Yes, this model is just meant to be a directional/starting point. Because of reduced buying power, one may have to plan for more than $5,000/month. OR, figure out a way to save money (such as geo arbitrage). The rate of inflation is real these days. Thanks for sharing!
@jonnes__4657Ай бұрын
@@ppcian I think you can simulate the inflation by reducing the growth of the stock and the dividend by an assumed inflation rate. That means you calculate everything AFTER inflation. We can also assume, that the growth itself will also be influenced by inflation.

I assumed about 1 million To 1.5 million....

Starting the video. I think ~1.7m?
@ppcianАй бұрын
Yes! Great estimate!

4:20 Such a useless waste of money. If you have $1.7 million, just put it in many of the accounts out there that give you back 4.5% APY and you will get $6610 a month, with ZERO risk, not "LOWER RISK". Terrible advice!

I invested 17K on TSLY and paying dividend over 1K per month. With dividend reinvested in 5 years, estimate is 10K per month.

QYLD yield ~11% per year. it pay out every month. Less than 600k you can have $5500 per month

To me buying some thing like a BTI and having all that single stock risk with barely any dividend growth and not monthly distributions doesn’t make sense when you can buy something like a JEPI or JEPQ that gives you monthly dividends and way more diversification and low beta with the same yield.
@ppcianАй бұрын
Great point, and agreed! I used BTI as an example to keep it simple. But, yes, I would want to buy a lot of stocks that average out to a yield in the range of BTI's 8.5% for that scenario. Single stock risk is real. Thanks for sharing! (Disc: I'm long BTI)

15 years ago someone was making this video about $30K of income. It’s a pipe dream due to inflation. You need to focus on earning a high income and investing a large percentage of it if you really want to achieve FI with a withdrawal rate equivalent to a median household after-tax salary. And as much as I love dividend investing, the S&P and a 4-5% withdrawal rate is likely going to get you to FI faster.

Thank you for sharing! All valid thoughts. It's not easy, and yes, inflation is a big consideration.

I have 628,000 in my rollover IRA that generates $72,500 per year in dividend income. ABR, ARCC, PDI, CSWC, BCAT, BXSL QQQI, SPYI, TSLX, BBDC, OBDC, SVOL. All this goes into my SPAXX money market cash management which also earns %4.9.

Bro make Ur videos short....times have changed
@ppcian25 күн бұрын
I do plan to include some shorter videos. I do agree that many would benefit from that, who just don’t have the time to watch the longer ones.
