I'm retired and have a Sony receiver 7.1 rated at 125 watts per channel powering 5 speakers on surround sound, but I use only the 2 front Polk's on music setting. I sit 8 feet away. I've been on stereo bookshelves for a few weeks now while I wheel and deal to get a more appropriate setup. My first setup was whatever I could afford. This is round 2. I got some great deals over black Friday (rp500c for 289) man going from the reference aluminum tweeters to these titanium ones...theres such an unbelievable difference. I actually had the rp500c on for a few days with some older reference bookshelves, and it blew everything else away. Very instructive video however the THX value is all over the place. Let us say we have a 5 channel system with speakers of 87 db sensitivity. and placed 1m around the listener. This means that at THX continuous we need less than 5 watts to power the entire system, right? And in the case of THX peak value we need an amplifier/av receiver with 320 W of total power. And if the speakers are placed at 3m around the listener the values move to 20w continuous and ~1300 watts for THX peark value? Am I missing something?

@blueboyblue5 жыл бұрын
It is actually 85db with 20db Headroom (85 + 20 = 105db). 105db is the peak value, not the average. Also, this is 115db for the Subwoofers, and those level are all at the listening position, not at 1 meter.
@bthellam5 жыл бұрын
I was definitely wondering hard at that 105 dB figure. Too loud for a living room my size. Normal speaking voices are around 60 dB and my voice is big and loud without shouting, so probably 70-80. I think 90-something (less than 100) would be plenty loud in there. Maybe 105 dB peak with all speakers including sub going in the room? (My wife wouldn't tolerate that!)

Something that wasn't mentioned in the video was if during his test if he used only one speaker or if two or more are actually playing. That would have an impact in the readings right? Several speakers playing will sound louder than just one speaker right?
@B.B.Digital_Forest3 жыл бұрын
Hi. If we are to follow the decibel charts then anything above 70 dB is noticeably loud. Like alarm clocks, construction noise, and vacuum cleaners. The Denon AVR-x2700H supposedly uses 95w at 8 ohms (for 2-channel driven speakers). In a small room environment, wouldn't the listener need little wattage to hear if seated at 2 meters minimum? Given that I'll be setting up my first hi-fi system in an open plan space, I'm sure my housemates and neighbors will hear it if I push to 90 dB. I don't get why some reviews say some A/V receivers offer little power if it doesn't take much to fill in a small room. How big do audiophiles prefer their spaces to be?

What power amp would you recommend for a stereo pair of 87db speakers?
@titodavila67344 жыл бұрын
Hi Techno Dad, thank you very much for the video! I saw your other video about the benefits of adding an external amp. If you have high efficiency speakers, like the Klipsh in your video, and are getting 105 dB with 16 watts at your listening position, do you still need an external amp for your receiver? It seems that any midrange AVR should be able to do the job, although the power would be less than the RMS power spec for those Klipshs. I have a 5.1.2 set up with Klipsh reference speakers and a Yamaha Rx-A770, and thinking about upgrading to denon 3700h with an external amp. Any feedback would be appreaciated!!

One of the main things I'm wondering in this test, though, is how to measure the wattage being delivered to the speakers. Aside from that, understand this is coming from a guitarist and pro audio guy, every individual driver is given specs including sensitivity rating. Speaker towers tend to have woofers and tweeters--more than one driver per tower. What is the sensitivity for each one? How is that different from measuring the sensitivity for the whole unit? They never tell us room specs or which sound meter they use.

Anyone knkw the db of the party speaker QFX PBX-8? Been trying to find but it only tells me there is a 1500 watt, and it doesnt say if that the max or not
@jeffersononetwo4 жыл бұрын
Awesome video ... for this reason, I just bought a 2019 Marantz AVR with rated 50 watt (page 10 of manual says 70 x 7 channels and does not mention ohms). Anyway, I found that indeed, 50 or 70 watts was plenty of power to hit the same volume as I had with my 90 watt/ch Yamaha. My speakers are 90db sensitivity in-walls. Let me see if I can understand this a little more: in your case, you get 99db @ 1 meter and lose about 3db per meter beyond that for the same wattage at the couch. I wonder what wattage it was to get those numbers? Was it 1 watt @ 1 meter, 2 watts @ 2 meters, and approximately 4 watts at the couch? I'm thinking you would have to double the wattage for every meter you are beyond the speaker ... 3 meters away so double wattage twice. I am thinking in terms of how much wattage needs to be applied - and sound intensity is what I'm after. By this then, if you double the distance (1 meter to 2 meters) then you cut the sound intensity to 93db at the microphone and at 3 meters it should about 89db at the couch with the same applied wattage of 1. To get from 89db up to 92db at the couch you would need to double the power to 2 watts, up to 95db would be 4 watts, 98db would be 16 watts, and 101db at the couch would be 256 watts. 101db to 105db sounds about right - I really like the empirical measurements you took with the meter. In real life, a quality 50 watt or 70 watt is plenty of power - the more would give more headroom, but my rule is in lower watts, go with quality watts. Thanks for the vid!

The higher wattage of an amplifier mainly comes into play at the peak volume of the musical piece. I have fairly low efficiency speaker in the AR-3a model. It will handle 11 watts rms continuously an any frequency, 23 watts for 30 seconds, and overloads of 400 watts for 2 seconds. These are pure sine waves. The manufacturer recommends a minimum of 25 watts to operate these speakers. I power these with a Marantz model 250M power amplifier, so there is plenty of headroom.

OK. So now I’m confused. You corrected yourself and said that THX reference level is actually 85 dBA continuous. And this doesn’t include subwoofer output. So if 85 dBA on the speakers is only needed to achieve reference levels, it looks like no matter the speaker, as long as it’s 86 sensitivity on the chart is using 2 watts or less? Doesn’t seem right.

Hi Chana, I am from australia and I have been watching your home theatre series and I really like it. I purchased klipsch RP 6000F along with Denon AVC-X3700H for my new soon to be ready house. I am planning for 5.2.4 My room size is about 5mts height 3.4 mts width and 2.7 height. My preferred seating is at 3.5mts. 105dB THX reference level is way too high for me. I would only need 75dB at my seating position. I have few questions. As per your video do you think I would need an external amplifier? As per my calculations each speaker will need less than one watt. Is that correct? So, doI need to do the same calculations for the surround speakers as well?

Hi! So you plug the sub to the subwoofer pre-out on the back of the AVR, you aren't powering the sub from the AVR, it's just sending a signal through an RCA cable. The sub needs to be plugged into power. I explain all that in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5yrinesq71lb6M

This is so interesting. Im about to get the klipsch 8000f. And i sit about 12 feet away from screen. At a really loud point ive measured 85db listening level creeping to 90db. Im running a yamaha rx660 which measures 80w 8 ohms 20/20 2 channel Driven. Except of course im running it at 5.1 so i have no idea the 5.1 power output. Going back the klipsch am i correct in assuming all i need is 2 to 4 watts to run the klipsch st 85db max?

Question, my speakers sound good but only after some time of playing audio. Especially the low end you can feel it after some time of playing but soon after I turn it on it's not as good. Suggestions on how to fix this or is this normal?

Are the speakers brand new? There is a theory of a break-in period. Since the drivers actually move in and out the will get better after some music is played through them.

I prob won’t get a response due the age of the video. But I want to try. I have a set of JAMO S606 standing towers rated @ 89dB, 6 Ohms, 130 RMS /230 Watt Peak. I used your calculations to get an estimate of how much power I need to in order to hit desired dB’s... my listening positions is 5 meters. Used an average of 3.3 dBs lost for every meter. Thats 17 dBs to hit 89dBs on my listening position. Now, I want to know if I did the calculation correctly. I subtracted 17 dBs from the 89 dBs to get 72 dBs using 1 watt. That means that on my listening position with 1 watt I will only hear 72 dBs. Now doubling the power for every 3 dBs puts my speakers 2,048 watts for 105 dBs. Thats an insane amount of power. But... my speaker is rated at 130 RMS and from the calculation means that I wont be able to listen no more than 93 dBs without damaging the speakers. does my calculations seem right? my current AVR is 90w @ 8 Ohms, not sure how much is pushes at 6 Ohms...

No sound check with the Decibel meter?

I have 300 watts per channel into speakers with sensitivity between 98 and 104dB and 300 Watts per channel into subwoofers with 96dB sensitivity each combined 99dB sensitivity and the corner increases that to 110 dB sensitivity.

thanks for this video I save my dollar dollar buying a new amp..I just got Paradigm Prestige 85F and Im using my old amp thats push "85w" per channel Pionner Elite SX-S30 I love how it sound and they go pretty loud on 80% volume which I dont really do on regular basis..But im on the market on buying a new amp and I came across with your video. I guess I dont need it anymore..

But how about any sonic compromise at very high sensitivity?

I've always found the Klipsch sensitivity ratings hard to believe. Could you do an A/B test with the Klipsch and some other speaker to see how much difference it makes? Use any speaker with a "normal" sensitivity rating of 86 to 90 dB.

That’s an interesting test. I might do that, thanks!

Very very helpful info. As per ur say we need good sensitivity speaker than a high power receiver or amp.

If by adjusting the distance through AVR, the higher the distance, mean more power to speakers? Meaning, 10ft setup can increase the wattage?? Thanks
@TechnoDad4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris. You don't necessarily want to do that because it's going to mess up the time alignment of the sound coming from each speaker to your main listening position.
