There was a time when Blaupunkt was available only at exclusive retailers. They made a set of honeycomb flat speakers that cost a mint back in the day - but their sound was incredible. These guys and Soundstream, whose amps were all USA made…now manufactured to a spec that only WalMart would attempt to sell.

Granted, it's nowhere near its rated power, but, if I spent ~$50.00 for this amp, I would be quite happy with it. That harmonic might be a high frequency superimposed on the audio signal. No problem, subwoofers have enough inductance to ignore that. If you're using this as a 'full range' amplifier, that high frequency could damage tweeters, especially piezo tweeters, unless they have resistors in series with them. That high frequency bleed through is likely the result of magnetic core saturation of the output inductor. That will only happen, at very low output impedance, where the output current exceeds the saturation current of that inductor. You're absolutely right, to look at the fuses. That is a "dead giveaway" as to the theoretical output power of the amplifier.

Back around 1972 Audiovox introduced one of the first "power boosters" on the market. The AMP500B "Sound Exploder". A tiny piece of crap that sold like hotcakes for around $30-$35. It had nothing but an on-off button, and massive distortion though it claimed 40wpc. Inflation adjusted it would be over $200 today. Keep that in mind.

Thanks for the vid! I love tests like these. 8:13 and uncertified is literally how much wattage the channel can develop. You're just listening to unrecognizable noise at that point. What's silly is, for a Class D amp priced around $50-140, its real world power ratings aren't terrible. That said, I wouldn't touch this thing. What's the point of "upgrading" the factory system if you're just gonna buy junk?

Those voltage pulses are simple to deal with. The reason for the pulses has to do with the switching speed of the power supply and the inductance of the input cables. You can't just remove energy from an inductor without it unloading the energy it has. This is how these amps make 60-90V rail voltage from 12VDC in the first place by switching on/off a large inductor inside to create voltage pulses that are stored as rail voltage. Problem is that the switching supply instantly turning off the power on the DC input cable makes the inductance of the DC cable do the same thing that the inductance of the power supplies is doing... making voltage pulses. Mind you, the inductance of the cables is orders of magnitude smaller than the internal inductors... but still. A good amp amp would have a place for that stored energy to go or would (more likely) alternate the internal charging between two or more inductors so that the 12 volt cable didn't see the sudden current shut-off during peak current demands. At least one of low enough frequency to matter. Adding a couple good quality film caps (of proper voltage and pulse current capabilities) across the 12V input should fix it and looping the power supply cables through a ferrite core will keep it from propagating down the cable and radiating.
@marcr6749

Agreed, good power for 50 bucks! I noticed the circuit board looked like the circuitry was split in half like they use the same board layout for a stereo amp. I wonder if they just internally bridged it and called it a mono block. The Chinese dont waste engineering on cheap electronics. It wouldn't surprise me if they want twice the amount of money for the stereo version but it is essentially the same amp unbridged with an additional speaker connector.

It be 4000W outrut at DIN at 1Khz Peak to Peak. So basically it be a 500W rms at 8ohm, but I bet it be at 10K bandwidth, meaning say 2khz to 12Khz audio freq range, and not 20 to 20Khz. so I bet its maximum at 8 ohm is 75% volume is 75W rms 20hz to 20Khz, and a 100% volume 100W rms distorted.

Blaupunkt GmbH was a German manufacturer of mostly car audio equipment. It was owned by Robert Bosch GmbH from 1933 until 1 March 2009, when it was sold to Aurelius AG of Germany. It filed for bankruptcy in late 2015 with liquidation proceedings completed in early 2016. The brand is now managed by GIP Development SARL of Luxembourg and is used on various product groups worldwide. All production was outsourced to China after the takeover. However, Robert Bosch Car Multimedia GmbH still manufactures mobile audio products for OEM integration and not retail sale branded electronics. That company is under the Bosch lane and is not to be confused with Blaupunkt. *All cut n paste like info from Wikipedia.

So, sometimes they get these wattage figures by pulse testing the amp for milliseconds, before some kind of current limiting is used to keep the amp from melting into a solid block of plastic. It's not going to pass 32a for long. Hence the term "continuous" which means it can deliver the rated power all day long. If no time duration is specified, they're not technically cheating, are they?

My 1996 self hearing of a $100 1000w BP amp would have known it was BS. Of course, BP was legit back then.

That’s some crazy emissions from the amp to be able to corrupt the data to the display. The screen is right on the front panel with the amp in close proximity. Having designed products that use similar LCD screens that must accept EMI blasts in testing without corruption, I know it takes a lot of energy to cause such disruption. Yikes.

You could just shield everything computer wise or just get a car so old it is carbureted, And no not electronic feedback carbureted but rather straight up carbureted, And instead of having the ignition control module in the bottom of distributor have it even more old-school like before the early 70s where it was just points ignition, Then even if it affected the alternator you wouldn’t even need it to run aside from trying to drive at night. I know all this is highly improbable that it would happen from the amp, but I’m just spelling out a mad max scenario for the fun of it.

Definitely good bang for the buck but there's an agency that should be notified about the false advertising, lying about the specs. That's the FTC. Blaupunkt should be penalized for false advertising/inflated claims.

That's sad. I had a Blaupunkt head unit in a K-car back in the 90s (super custom wiring). It was rated for 20 watts per channel and blew every speaker I hooked up until I got to the cerwin vega 3x4's that were rated for 80w.

Not a bad deal for the numbers but a used alpine, kenwood, jbl, and Memphis would likely provide a much better value and better sound quality overal. Plus for a daily driver 800 watts on a subwoofer channel is PLENTY! I'm running a alpine v12 5 channel amplifier with separate sub output. It absolutely works my Rockford fosgate punch p3 subwoofer and it's not even at max wack! Running old school blaupunkt velocity component speakers front and rear and it really sounds amazing through my alpine 3342

most of these companies were bought up by buying groups and conglomerates for marketing purposes to use the name and shifted all production to Chinese or amplifiers made in Taiwan or japan.

My God! in the 80's the brand Blaupunkt was one of the most coolest and finest ., lot of people carry a big sticker with the brand Blaupunkt logo name in a complete lower side of their car meaning quality sound that comes from Germany. In the main page they are still selling modern car radios like the Santa Cruz 900, Sao Paulo 450 and Medellin 900 hey are Android/ Apple car play big sceen radios. I never like the name they choose for the radios.

Hi Derick. I am from South Africa, I like your channel and watch lots of videos. You are doing a great job. I see you test all kinds of amps and sometimes speakers. In this part of the world , manufacturers like Star sound , Targa , Ice power ect is quite popular. Did you test some of those or do you have some videos of those? i am running a very small audio system , using 1>< 12" Targa and a starsound mono block. The sub is rated at 4000w and the amp at 2000w , which i strongly doubt will ever push that type of power. What is your feeling toward these type of audio? I believe I could have done better with a 12" pioneer.
