I’m hearing you speak about being in Europe and eating croissants and bread in olive oil. I don’t know if you noticed but Europeans are much thinner than Americans and yet I’ve never heard one of them talk about tracking their food, calories etc. I’ve been to Italy three times and the people eat pasta every single day. The difference is portion sizes for everything. The plate of pasta is much smaller. There is no such thing as a large cappuccino or latte. It’s one size and it’s small. They don’t snack. They don’t consume as much processed food. The European Union also doesn’t allow the amount hormones, antibiotics, pesticides and herbicides allowed in the US. People walk more. It is a shame but the sad truth is the lifestyle in the US and the bad regulation of the food industry is killing Americans. You go to Europe and no one feels guilty about eating and the number of people who are overweight is much lower. The relationship to food is a more balanced one.

I noticed this too when I lived in Italy. I wish we could eat normal and live life w/out thinking so much about it. Everything health wise has to be so intentional. It feels like a job as opposed to just enjoying food and life.

My many years living in Europe (mostly Germany and Belgium) I can agree: I def noticed everyone was skinny compared to the US/UK, but more of the skinny fat/tofi variety. They had zero muscle mass, little beer guts, and chicken legs.

Chalene, the last sentence of this video was the most impactful part of it for me. I was in my bathroom brushing my hair when you said be thankful to your body and thank it for all it does for you. It brought me to tears because I never realized that not only did I never say thank you to my body, I blamed it. So today I stood in front of the mirror and through tears I thanked my body for getting me through three months of bed rest battling premature labor while pregnant for twins. It endured months of hospital stays and various procedures and drugs while holding me to 32 weeks before it could take no more. While my body did it’s work my doc used every trick in the book to help my babies be born with as few complications as possible. Today I have two beautiful 32 year old daughters who had very few complications as a result of their prematurity. My body has also brought me through kidney stone attacks, a heart attack and an open heart surgery…still crying…thank you Chalene for this nudge. I will make this part of my morning routine. Signed, another Shelene ❤

This hit home. I am done with all of it too. I mean, I won't be letting myself go and turning into a frumpy slob, but I'm just done with all of it. I'm 55 and I'm tired of chasing 30. I'm tired of obsessing over every line, every wiggle, trying too hard to look 35 when I'm 55. I eat a healthy vegetarian diet 90% of the time and I am enjoying my life without all of the stress. I have a lot to be grateful for. I've done well, my kids are raised, educated, and are doing fantastic on their own, I get to travel when ever and pretty much where ever I want, I'm growing old with my wonderful husband of 35 years, and am content with life and what I have. I wish I had learned to love and accept myself a long time ago. It's very freeing.

I would love to see an updated workout routine! 🙌 I’m so sick of tracking all my food. It’s not natural, it’s not what humans were designed to do, and I’m just over it. Thanks for giving us hope and being proof that we will in fact survive and THRIVE without worrying about every single macro/calorie/whatever. 🥰

Tracking food is necessary for micronutrient deficiencies. I do not take multi-vitamins because they do not have bio-available nutrients like meat, eggs, dairy. Chronometer is a great free app for doing this. I ditched MyFitnessPal after 5 years because it did not have this feature.

I'm 35, 5'1, had three kids. I've been 105lbs and I've been 208lbs. I've done heavy lifting and I've been super slim. And I wasn't happy during any of it. Because it is important not to stress about the scale or the mirror. I've never been happier than now and I have no idea how much I weigh cuz I threw that thing in the trash.

I love reading all these beautiful comments! Thank you Chalene for reminding me to love my body - this is often not easy to do - struggling with body image most of my life (like probably 99% of women.) I cried when I heard you say that! Menopause has been hard with weight gain/composition changes, and I am SO tired of tracking on and off for 5 years- it has been exhausting! I am going to give this a try, especially since I already have an idea of macros/what is healthy/etc, and I exercise regularly. It sounds so liberating!!! I started this morning with protein first - excited to feel less “charge” surrounding being “perfect” every day. I’m subscribing to your channel today!!! ❤❤❤

I can’t tell you how much this hit home. I opened a business 6 years ago and have stressed myself to the point of burnout over the business, weight gain, cortisol, tracking, putting my marriage second, etc. This was such a good reminder to live a less stressed existence and quit worrying about what others think. Thank you!

I agree with this but also see tracking as an incredible learning tool. Many people don't know what adequate protein looks like. Being intuitive is great once you have a good foundation. It can also help with portion sizing at the start and understanding where a lot of extra calories are sneaking in without realising. It's important to not become obsessive but to use trackers as a tool and a learning experience. Tracking may not be for everyone but it's helped many people.

First time viewer. I've been a fairly healthy, athletic man all of my life. I'm now i am now a little past 60 and have been active in tennis, basketball, hiking, and weightlifting. I was doing fairly well until last May when I was diagnosed with colon cancer. I went through surgery and then chemo. I'm about four months out from completing chemo and I'm doing well. As a result of this experience, I find myself viewing a lot more online fitness/heath and nutrition, healthy living content. Even though I ate "fairly healthy" and exercised regularly, I am now focusing more on what foods I eat. I know protein is important but fruits and veggies are also important too. So hearing your perspective on this was absolutely like a breath of fresh air. I really like your common sense approach to getting enough protein and weight loss. Thanks!

I love this episode! I'm at a point in my life where I'm just tired of all the tracking, the numbers, the mis-information out there. You get so stressed going down the rabbit hole, then you get frustrated give up and just binge. So I too decide to take the same approach, protein and vegetables are #1 priority in a meal...if I want a something chocolate or salty I just each it and don't stress about it. The salty and chocolate snacks don't become a habit because I'm not stressing about it. I find eating better quality a meat is also a game-changer because for some reason it's more satisfying and I don't have side effects like general grocery store meat. Thank you for the episode!

Your my first;) I’m a 53 yr old man who is 6’8”. Two years ago I was 380lb. Eating the SAD diet. I was not exercising, couch and desk potato. I had trouble walking to my mailbox, but what broke the camels back was I bought slip on shoes because I couldn’t tie my own shoes.😢 first thing I did was I got a labor intensive job. Walking 14000 steps a day and moving/packing out boxes. Started eating meat, eggs, salt, butter. Today I’m at 245 lbs. I tried to introduce fruit, but started to gain more weight. I guess that’s the fructose. After watching your video I think I’m ready for veggies 😮 and strength training. So thanks and good luck with your plant.

OMG I 100% agree with you! I did this a few years ago (before kids). I have always struggled having a healthy relationship with food (I even worked at Jenny Craig to teach myself healthier habits). I basically followed the same routine but my goal was to have a veggie with every meal. I was lifting at the time and I never do well with tracking. It just doesn’t work for my brain and I don’t want that to control my life. I will tell you, I was in the best shape of my life. Now with two little kids and a picky eater fiancé, it’s a little harder for me, not gonna lie, but I have been working to readopt that concept for myself because it was so successful.

I really enjoyed your workout routine which I started in July and after 3 months gained 2.8lbs of muscle and lost 2.2 lbs of fat. Quite motivating to say the least. Would LOVE to see an updated version!!

I have been active my entire life and never had to worry about what I ate etc.. Once I hit my 40s, the weight started to pack on. I woke up one day and said enough! I lost 45 lbs over a 2 year period by cleaning up my diet and just eating lean protein, veggies, fruits. No calorie counting, no macro caluclating etc. I did watch portion size. I also started strength training and doing HIIT workouts. Nothing crazy, 30-45 minutes a day plus walking my dog. Even being in surgery induced menopause from a hysterectomy, the weight started to come off. I refuse to live my life obsessing and calculating what I eat. I have put on 10 lbs after a broken collarbone and being unable to work out for 3 months. It's proven to be harder to get it off then it was those 45 lbs. but I will keep at it and not obsess.

I need to start from scratch at this point I’ve been in Bed for over a year and a half. Thank you for any help and all of your videos that you post you’re my favorite channel.

I'm a recent subscriber, and I appreciate all your good advice! I'm 74 and having another hip replacement in November. I used to do Jane Fonda and her challenge video regularly as well as high impact Jazzercise for years, and low carb Atkins. Now it's harder for me to stay as active, with the pain factor, but, I'm going to the gym multiple days a week. I ride the stationary bike for half an hour and do resistance machines to try and get stronger especially with surgery coming up. !I have been restricting my diet for years. and now I'm more relaxed about it.I try to walk as much as I can.Thank you for your no-nonsense💗 point of view! My surgeon actually said I'm thin so surgery will be easy! (I was actually shocked to hear that) Thank you!

I totally kind of do this! I just cook a lean meat and some vegetable for dinner every night! Some friends and family think it’s so weird that I don’t cook a starch or carb. In the place of that on my kids plates I put fruit 😊. It works for us. The rest of the family may grab a hunk of bread or make a pasta if they really want it but it’s not our usual 😊

Loved this! I have been thinking about hiring an online coach to develop a meal plan for months, but I never pull the trigger because I can't bear the thought of counting macros/weighing my food etc. I just started BHRT and workout 6 days/week. I'm going to take your advice and try to eat a little less and just see what happens. Thank you for this logical and common sense approach.

Don't eat processed foods, including protein powders. Carnivore is so easy! Try it for 30 days, 90 would be better. I doubt you will go back.

Enjoy your last few years of life then. You people are taking things too far extremes… unless the cows were being fed the vitamins & minerals you’re not getting what you need to live many years longer. All you’ve done is done an extreme elimination food diet, it wasn’t everything you were eating that was making you sick but you eliminated everything but meat and got the one or two things that was bothering you out of the way when you eliminated everything that was good for you along with the things that were bad for you, but just eating meat is not going to keep you alive long.

So I have to thank you for the reminder to stop stressing out about the process. Last year, I lost almost 40 pounds after a loss in the family (I just stopped eating). Then my appetite came back, and I gained it back, plus a bit more. I wonder if I threw my metabolism into a frenzy and just need to do a reset. I am motivated by tracking though, especially when it comes to strength training. I'm stronger than I have been in a long time. But, the scale is not budgeing. I do think that in the beginning, it does help to hold yourself accountable and pay attention (you'll think twice about that second slice). But I agree that prioritizing protein is a great suggestion, because it's so filling. There's zero chance I could possibly eat 1.0 g per lb of body weight everyday, so just focusing on higher protein, higher quality foods and being more active is going to be the key here. Perimenopause is a pain in the arse, but it can help you refocus on the things your body needs instead of trying to run yourself into the ground. Thanks for all the tips.

I just found this episode. And I am so thankful that you are speaking about all this craziness about Protein and how to do it the healthy way for your body, soul and spirit! I needed that, Chalene! Thank you! I’m on my way to change my mindset about food in general and workouts (I had such a long journey from loosing weight, surgeries where my skin got cut off, gaining weight again I didn’t actually want to, eating disorder (never tracked my calories) where I didn’t eat good nutritive Food and ate just all these processed foods/proteins because I forbid myself carbs etc.) Now I am on my journey to a all over balanced healthy living and eating. 🌱 As you said: Eating in a specific order every meal - I am on that a few days now and it is fulfilling for my soul and spirit AND it has such a good impact on my body. Thank you again!

I subscribed to your channel after watching. This video resonated with me so much. I turned 50 July 2022. I came across a fitness influencer and that was the 1st time I was introduced to macros and learned about the “importance” of a high protein intake. I’m a Registered Nurse so I had a Registered Dietitian take a look at the percentage recommended 160 grams my ideal goal body weight. My dietitian was extremely concerned and worried at the suggested amount of protein. I continued against her better judgement and got well below my goal weight but my calorie intake was extremely low and I started to think about food all the time. I was in a calorie deficit for about 6 months with no break. Finally she suggested maintenance after my constant questioning but with no true guidance on how to gradually increase calories or reverse diet and my hormones and appetite was out of control. I couldn’t stop eating because I didn’t know how to maintain the weight or increase calories. I only knew how to decrease calories and eat high protein. I became very obsessed about food and developed an unhealthy relationship with food. I eventually went on to gain back the weight lost and 30 more pounds extra. I haven’t been this weight in about 7 yrs. Your content is relatable because I am in perimenopause. The fitness influencer that I was trained by was in her early twenties, just became pro when I joined and was apart of a company that sold supplements such as protein powders, greens powders and a whole host of other supplements. The program wasn’t sustainable for me so now that I have come across your content I will consider your Phase It Up group. Thanks again!
