I live in one of the most affordable places in America and rent averages $600 for a 1 bedroom that’s currently 570 euros. A one bedroom house cost around $80,000

Where is that? Because where I lived in the US it was arpund 1800-2000 for a studio apartment!

Prices everywhere have gone up... Salaries are not increasing proportionally to expenses that need to be paid.

Ik betaal €650 voor een klein kamertje in Rotterdam-Zuid maar de flat is echt mooi. Twee jaar geleden betaalde ik €370 voor een grotere kamer in R'dam-Noord. De huizenmarkt is onhoudbaar.

I don't know if it's Airbnb or corporate landlords/hedge funds buying large amounts of housing but it's definitely Europe wide if not worldwide. Look it up. Some funds have more money than many governments.

USA my first rent 7 years ago was $1025, plus ~$40 for garbage, $80 for internet, $150 for gas in the winter and less in the summer, but usually $40 or more for electric, $30-$60 for water.... I had no health insurance for a while, but then public health insurance. and food stamps after a few months, $100 a month. I was paid $7.25 an hour and worked a lot of overtime and was a full-time student. I usually only had $20 leftover for food and gas each month so I missed many classes and got food from the pantry. This is in a small town of less than 5000 people, too. Not a big city. and taxes take 70% away of my measly $7.25 an hour

Minimum wage in Europe is higher than that but we've had higher prices for longer. We now have similar pressures on rent and mortgages (probably corporate landlords buying property) and also health cover (pressure to privatise the NHS in the UK, cost of drugs going up because they don't negotiate with drug companies as part of the EU, so all of Europe loses). Joseph Stieglitz said 10 years ago that the us needed health cover for the economy to benefit. Same need to socialise other needs like housing. Thatcher said there's no such thing as society.

@@unatwomey7112 well, "minimum wage in Europe is higher than that"..only in northen Europe, tho. I earn about 1100€ :') and the minimum wage here is 820€. Renting a house in portugal costs between 600-1000€ and that together with monthly groceries, water, electricity expenses, etc makes it literally impossible to live on your own. Rooms can be a bit more affordable, but still..

So at the start Dutch Subs say laten we beginnen... I heard laten beginnen only. I watch his mouth and only see laten beginnen... Granted my ear is not tuned in as a native... So any natives can you tell me does he actually say laten we beginnen or just laten beginnen?

als iemand die in singapore geboren en opgevoed ben, vind ik de huurprijs in Nederlands niet te belachelijk. met dezelfde huurprijs kan je veel ruimte meer, vooral met een tuintje ofzo.

350e was my first renting room(20m2 with my own kitchen, bathroom and toilet) in a big house in Limburg, Venlo; and I thought it was already too much (with all bills and internet included); I couldn't believe that some people were paying double for lower standard in many different provinces in the Nederland; now we're seeing awful consequences of covid and lockdowns.. students are working double to pay for their overpriced rooms
