Here's my anecdote - my mom was following Barnard's/McDougall's (et alia) dietary advice except for the SINGLE bad habit of oversalting her food - a tablespoon a day, yikes! So, she was eating 100% low fat, whole foods, plants exclusive, lots of veggies, greens, and fruit, beans, whole grains. Well that one bad habit of hers, put her in the hospital last October, with a mini stroke and a hypertensive crisis. Salt in excess can be nothing short of deadly, all on its own. So, tread lightly!

Thanks for sharing as I have been gradually increasing the amount of Knorr veggie stock cubes I eat a day without even realising it (up to 3 a day!) and they're mainly salt. I hope your mom is better.

And it was not due to the fruit, beans and whole grains? So much carbohydrates couldn't be healthy...

Adding lemon juice, with or without finely grated lemon zest, is the best salt substitute, I think, because it seems to stimulate the taste buds in a similar way to salt. I've noticed that salt-free seasonings like Mrs Dash use citric acid as a salt substitute. Lemon (or lime) would add that acid naturally. Their juices really brighten up a dish when added just before serving.

Thank you for doing this! I was wondering about the differences in the salts.

A mixtures of dried herbs, onion & garlic powder on (no-oil) pan-grilled tofu tastes quite salty so I add less salt at table. I've reduced the amount of stock cube I use, I now never cook soups, etc. with it, I add some crumbled at table and mix it into the hot soup and I find I don't need to add much at all. I was surprised how quickly my taste buds adjusted. I have also halved the amount of artificial sweeteners I had been putting in my coffee for decades and again my taste buds got used to the less sweet flavour within a week, planning to go sweetener-free in the next couple of weeks and maybe even have good coffee just black or with very little plant milk.

I like a sprinkle of garlic granules, and a dash of red pepper flakes. Works perfectly for my no sos plan.

Soluble acetaminophen and other soluble painkillers are also a big source of salt, especially if people have to take them regularly. Some brands can contain 400-500mg per tablet.

I have chronic low sodium, to the point that when I had knee replacement surgery, they threatened to cancel my surgery if my sodium level remained low. My GP had me restrict fluids and eat typically salty food before my blood was taken (for 3days). It did raise it to just above the cut off rate. I’m very confused as to the long term effects of this condition. Can anyone shed some light on this! HELP

This came out at a time when I was thinking about salt! I was thinking about what foods have sodium naturally and if we even need to add it at all? by the way taco bell does have sodium warnings when you order online.

Can someone link me the details about salt leeching calcium from the bones please. Dr Greger says sodium interferes with calcium absorption. Would like to read more about this topic. I've stopped sodium/salt but I did used to consume way too much salt for decades and I do have osteoporosis.

Is lower better when it comes to sodium? Is 1,000 mg/day better than 1,500 mg/day? Is 500 mg/day even better?

Surely we must distinguish between refined table salt that has been denuded of essential trace elements and minerals, and unrefined sea salt (evaporated sea water with nothing extracted) which has those healthy minerals and trace elements still present. This is what my macrobiotic training taught me 35 years ago - that for the maintenance of good health, and recovery from sickness, unrefined sea salt, in small amounts, is necessary. This can be consumed directly as sea salt, or in high quality condiments, such as miso, shoyu, tamari, etc., that contain sea salt. And for further enhancement of health through a broad spectrum of minerals (such as iodine), small amounts of seaweed regularly is of great benefit.
