@@kiersor In cycling you often calculate the power someone can put out divided by the body weight. That gives you a w/kg unit. This makes it easier to compare to other riders, especially when it comes to how fast someone can ride uphill. Zone 2 means an easy effort someone can sustain for many hours. For his personal zone2 he can put out a power many can't do for 5minutes. If you could do it for only 20 minutes, you would probably winning some local races here and there. He can sustain that for many hours and then obviously his 20minutes power is even way higher.

Use power early since HR lags in time, then use a combination to check fatigue levels or hydration. For me if my z2 power dips to z1 and my HR is still z2 in a long ride that usually means my fueling/hydration is insufficient as while fatigue your power may dip it usually should still be in the z2 range.

Zone 2 isn't actually a measure of heart rate, it's our aerobic threshold where we have lactate below about 2mmol. But because it's inconvenient to take lactate readings we try to equate it to a heart rate or rate of perceived exertion. But the fitter you are the higher it goes.
@perman072 ай бұрын
You should view heart rate zones as an attempt to proxy what is going on energetically in the body. Blood lactate levels more accurately tell you that. RPE/breath intensity can be as telling as heart rate. So don't view the heart rate as the goal, view it as a method.

Petter, Actually lactate goes linear till 4 according to Maden( 1976) when it starts to go up exponentially above this threshold so zone 2 it’s a bit more intense going till 4 mmol, because it’s Still an intensity that can be sustained indefinitely for trained subjects. But zone 1 would be more like 2 mmol of concentration value being this a regenerative aerobic used to recover from a previous hard zone 2 or 3 training day but is not intended to be training base. He didn’t mention anything about lactate on his training but his heartbeat rate. Professional athletes use to have a functional bradycardia meaning they can reach higher lactate values and have a lower heart rate than the usual for the same power output compared to non athletes, because they are “ lactate eaters “. and so have the ability to keep high intensity indefinitely. They can produce and metabolize lactate at the same rate more than normal people. Botton line his lactate is even higher most likely reaching 4 during the majority of the training period and is still zone 2 because zone “2” doesn’t means 2 mmols of lactate but a concept that goes beyond it, as the higher intensity that can be sustainable metabolic speaking. 👍😉
@paxundpeace99702 ай бұрын
It does raise turn faster a bit earlier point like 3.2 to 3.7 for most athlets.
@leandromantovani42822 ай бұрын
@@paxundpeace9970 yes it actually does. Some people in the literature divide it into two concepts the threshold 1 and 2 being the 2 the actual threshold and should be done less frequently as a “hard zone 2” compared to the “easy zone2”. At any rate it’s still sustainable and it’s not necessarily this exact same numbers for everyone because the Lactate Threshold gave place today to another concept called Maxlass that would be the maximal lactate steady state and is been found by another test protocols. It was created after some observations that some athletes were outperforming the normal curve, some of them reaching even 7 mmol stable in the row exercise. The lactate is not a villain it is actually a good guy as a form of energy that can be turn back into glucose and even a buffer for acidosis not an acidic agent like most people thinks but it’s for another discussion. We need to keep in mind that is a marker of switching energy systems but is not exactly detrimental to your body to exercise on high lactate levels if you can keep it going. It’s actually what makes you increase your condition and don’t get stuck.

Oh, and he’s only 26. Other cyclists take years longer to reach their peak. That’s why there’s a classification for “Under 23” at the TdF, because they’re not expected to have ultimate conditioning by that age and need a trophy to compete for. This dude was winning Tours at 22. How’s he gonna pull when he’s 30? Insane.

Wow I just can’t imagine 320-340 watts in zone 2, absolute machine!

For him that's basically 5w/kg. Very few average amateur cyclists are able to get to 5w/kg for 20mins as a maximum effort. I saw some statistics awhile back but have forgotten the details, but think only 1 or 2% of the overall cyclist community can get to 5w/kg for 20mins and he's doing it for hours hardly raising a sweat! Incredible!

After the WCs Merkcx finally said TP is the best ever, that he himself was never this good (his ‘24 season). Freak indeed.

Is he talking about zone 2 within a 3 zones model? (In other words, between LT1 and LT2) Or… is he talking about zone 2 in a 5 zones model? (So zone 2 = below LT1)

Isn’t that high for zone 2? I thought zone 2 is 60-70% of max HR??

My peak fitness I would do a 107 mile ride @235w, my heart rate rose into 150s in the last hour. Average HR was around 145. He does 320-340w @145… that is insane.

Tamau pogi is not the only Slovenian who was unreal racer! Check out this animal named Jure Robič! Won the race across America 5 times (then a recore in men's solo category) 2004--5-7.8 and 2010! They cheated him in 2009-he received atime penalty for urinating in a non designated place on the start day of the race! He was racing all over the globe, but died like half an hour from his home, when he was hit by a drunk driver

isnt 140-150 bpm is not a zone2 by definition? well if his max heart rate is like 210 then of course but is it?

previous winter season for gym i managed to get like 300 avg watts for 1h 40min recovery ride with 115 avg heart rate my lowest ever for that power also for same distance (68km) 1h 42 min i got 428 avg watts my avg heart rate was 153 and for last 10 km i did 470 watts spurt with 182 max heart rate i have no idea how my legs was that insane during that record first i though the bike is broken or something because it felt easy 2nd best record is pretty far from that its "only" 400 avg watts that broke the 400 avg watts limit for me first time ever
