I'm a journeyman cabinetmaker and kitchen installer (living in the next door province!). I've used the expensive aluminum door handle drilling jig. I've found it cumbersome. Its always been easier to just make up a quick plywood drilling jig for each job. I've found that a 3/16" tapered drill bit from Lee Valley is the only way to drill through doors, for handles. It never blows out or splinters the back of the door. And you don't need to backup the door with any sacrificial wood, to prevent splintering. I did buy a Kreg hinge boring jig, like you used in the video, and I've been pleasantly surprised at how good it actually is. The bit that comes with it seems to last a long time too. The least expensive part of any kitchen is really the cabinet boxes themselves. All of the money is spent on the cosmetic stuff: doors, drawers, handles, countertops. Just a little FYI for anybody reading this. Keep up the good work on the videos!

Super helpful, as always Ben. I am a self-employed remodel contractor doing kitchens and baths 99% of the time. I do jobs exactly like this on 3-4 times a year and I think this video is spot-on and I'm looking forward to the rest of your series. There are some pretty inexpensive handle templates at the big-box stores for about $20. Not as nice as your pro model but good for a home-owner DIY who might spend more time DIY'g a jig than $20 is worth to them. Another thing I appreciate about this video is your labor-time estimates. A zillion how-to vids on youtube but for people who are hoping to get paid, that's critical - please keep that up! Another great video Ben - thanks!

well done, Sir- As a Painting Contractor I have been doing ALOT of resurfacing of "boxes" & Cabinet doors / drawers. lately. The price to do an entire kitchen from scratch ( even a small one ) is extreme. Granted, I am doing the doors (Not new ones) , as well. In Florida, for a kitchen that size, I can get it done for $1500, including the repairing boxes, doors, & drawers plus paint & labor. Guess that's why my phone is blowing up: 10 kitchens done last year when usually it's 2 a year. The price of cabinets is through the roof! Thanks for the tips and I appreciate your channel.

Here's a recommendation: Please take time to discuss full overlay, partial overlay, inset, and partial inset cabinet doors on frameless or full frame cabinets. This is key critical and very complex for DIY'ers. I just repainted my "partial inset" doors but having a heck of a time finding hidden hinges to replace the outdated original visible inset hinges. You can't use any of the big-box store hinges; they're for either overlay or inset only, not partial inset
@jimmassengale34972 жыл бұрын
You need to take the door size minus the opening (DoorWidth-Opening)/2 typically to get the overlay. They do very and you should be able to find the correct overlay or closest. 1/2" overlay is typical. My wife does what you are describing all the time. We have setups for our drill press as she is typically converting 20-25 doors for a job which is 40-50 35mm holes or more that have to match exactly. It can be done DIY but tricks of the trade are investments most DIYers may not want to buy.

did an incredible job (for a small fee they predrilled all the hinges). I painted them myself with a sprayer and they turned out great. The hardest part is assuring precise measurements. 10 cabinets with 7 drawers it totaled $1200 for doors+ drawers, and $150 for paint. Well worth it over replacing the entire cabinet

In the USA you can get doors with the 35mm holes predrilled. I did my kitchen in maple with raised panels and had the doors made and drilled. Come out very nice. The shop bored the holes only one position, so on 4 doors the were wide but not tall I ordered them undrilled and I placed the 4 holes with a drill press near the edges so they wouldn’t sag. The benefit of prebored is if you screw up you buy a new door. If they screw up they have to eat the damage. General Finishes water based poly is amazing, pricy, and worth it because you don’t need to buy a spray system, and it’s KCMA certified (Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association). Doing a refacing is 1/4 the price of new cabinets. Very smart. I agree with everything said in this video. Hint: Guys, your wife will love you for this!

Using sommerfeld router bits you can build a 27x20 5 piece door for about 35.00 a door, plus or minus depending on wood. I would also recommend their hinge boring jig, it is a little pricey but it rocks, it does the hinge pockets and hinge screws at the same time and has placement stops so it is very repeatable.

Love all your videos. However, when I heard you mention impact driver it caught my ear. Aside from installing cabinet boxes, I never use an impact driver during a cabinet install. I learned the hard way that the hinge screws are cheap and can snap. Thus, you'll have to re drill and adjust all the cabinet doors based on the screw that you just spun the head off of. A regular drill/driver with a clutch set to 20 works in most cases for attaching doors.

I’m fortunate in that all the kitchen cabinet doors are oak and have an attractive finish. But I thought they could use an upgrade a few years ago. None of them had handles. They have a groove where you put your hand and pull. It works but I wanted handles. So I drilled and put brushed metal handles on all of them. It worked out great. I also didn’t like having to fish around in this tiny cabinet next to the stove looking for spices. It’s barely wide enough to stick your hand in. Everything gets buried in the back. So I attached narrow oak shelves to the side of the cabinet and that’s where all of my most used spices go. No more searching. And since the food pantry was so small and I had no place to put brooms or mops I built shelves on the wall out of oak stair risers with one side butting against the wall and the other side using brushed metal shelve brackets from IKEA. All of my canned goods and such are neatly stacked on shelves were I can see them and I removed half the shelves in the pantry and use the two left for bulk stuff like cereal and snacks which gives me room for mops and brooms below.

Ben, thank you for another very informative video! I recently stripped (removed thermofoil on MDF) and repainted all my cabinet doors for my kitchen and bathrooms. Total of 62 panels, I was quoted between $5,600 and $8,000 here in Toronto (again that is JUST to repaint)! Totally ridiculous if you asked me. Well worth a week of our time and effort as I bought an HVLP spray gun, $300 worth of primer and paint and some elbow grease.

Yeah, those prices are insane for something that really doesn't take skill. You could get a high school kid to watch some videos and paint some cabinets. I'm looking to do the same thing and I'm hearing the same absurd prices. It's cheaper to just buy new doors than to paint the original ones.

Ben, my wife does cabinets "Paint/Clear" professionally she typically uses $55US for the cost per door, i.e. the sink base is (2) or your row of drawers are (1). She always has to convert from traditional to hidden, no way would she ever do the 35mm by hand. I have setup many templates specifically a 35mm template dedicated for on our drill press base. Converting door and drawer handles typically going from one hole pull to two. So, for her templates are key to make on site changes if necessary. Good bits good tools and good templates are necessary.

Remind me - this is the job where your (former) landlord is covering materials? We were fortunate. Previous owner had tried to refinish oak plywood doors - he evidently started with a belt sander.
