God Mary this is so incredibly helpful, thank you so much. I'm 38 and gave up my music dreams in my mid 20s, only to find myself feeling empty a couple years ago. I'm attempting to get back in now with some friends and figured doing some KZbin content to supplement the music would be a good path to make something happen, at least get a bit of remuneration for the efforts, and YOUR content is by far the most helpful I've found by a LONG shot! Thanks so much!

You deserve the recognition.

That´s absolutly correct ! Mary might have been known before but that was the video when I got aware of her . I have to admit that Leo´s Version of " Sultans of Swing " only came out as it is now because of Mary´s voice and attitude . She gave the song or the rough version the original soul back again . Don´t get me wrong , Loe is an incredible Musician and to me he appears funnily weird but Mary´s voice and attitude made the song perfect . The combination of the rough sound and her harmonic Voice gave the song the I-point on that already perfect song . If anyone would take only one Part away this would be useless . For example you would off Leo´s voice it would be hard to listen . Also it would be if you would take away Mary´s voice . This song was a perfect example that it is possible to bring back an old famous song in a different way and it gets skyrocket in the charts . But you ´ll need openminded creators and people who are a contrast to each other . That´s what you find on that song . Leo´s rough sound and Mary´s harmonic voice and attitude . @Mary Spender : Did you learn anything of Leo about the Music industry and what was that ?
@ThothWhoWrites4 жыл бұрын

Wow, this seems like a very complicated maze to navigate. I'm all about DYI and completely avoiding major labels. I've heard so many horror stories down through the years about really great musicians being totally ripped off by the majors. It's really sad. Fortunately, there are avenues for independent artists but, obviously, we need to watch our own backs and help each other out along the road. That's why I really appreciate your efforts in giving guidance to the rest of us. Thanks Mary.

a point, ray, worth noting: if you compose, protect your copyright.
@warrenpuckett42032 жыл бұрын
1st thing using a published song requires permission from the holder of the content. But the arraignment you do must also be copyrighted. Or the originator can use it and sue you. Yes there is a difference Then use it and release that version and sell a million copies. Paying the holder for fair use does not work. Had a friend do that in the 70s. He got sued for all of the profit from the 150,000 copies he sold. He was a factory worker vs a multi-million dollar corporation. Then I had to look for another job. So did he. Neilsson was not the originator of Me and and my Arrow. He got sued by the originator. The lawyers bankrupted the originator. Then he owned it. Works the same with industry. TV and the Weed Eater are prime examples. George C. Ballas, Sr. and Philo T. Farnsworth ended up bankrupt defending their patent. Same thing happens to songwriters. Congress: for the business, by the business and written by the business.

Great content as always, Mary. How/when do you set aside time to review and respond to comments while still being able to make music and videos? It seems liked it'd take up a lot of time and could distract from creating, but it's clearly a necessary aspect of being a KZbinr. Perhaps you could do a video on this so we can see how you factor it into your day/week?

Justin I can answer that question: If Mary wants to make a livable wage she HAS to do something other than make music. The major labels EACH of them (there are three) are making $2.56 million dollars an HOUR. So the money that should be going to people like Mary Spender who are doing the valuable work is actually not going to people like her. The money is going to giant corporations who do basically nothing. So she HAS to do something other than make music or she'll starve.
