How Multi-link Suspension Works

Here's how a multi-link suspension works on a passenger vehicle.
The multi-link suspension is an advanced suspension design that consists of a series of links or suspension members that attach the wheel carrier to the vehicle body. The purpose of the suspension system is to 1) support the weight of the vehicle, 2) maintain good tire contact with the road and 3) provide good ride comfort and handling for the vehicle's occupants.
In this video, a typical four and five link independent suspension is demonstrated as a 2004 Infiniti G35 sedan is taken apart piece by piece as an example. Parts are removed from the vehicle and cut apart, including the vehicle sub-frame, control arms, wheel carriers, knuckles, brakes, bearings, springs, struts, stabilizer bars, end links and drive line to study the scientific role of each and every component in the multi-link suspension. A discussion of wheel alignment parameters, such as scrub radius, steering axis inclination, toe, camber and caster and its affects on vehicle dynamics follows.
The multi-link suspension differs from the McPherson and Double Wishbone suspension systems, which are covered in this video:
• How Automotive Suspens...
The double wishbone is a 3 link fixed variant of the multi-link design, while the McPherson utilizes the strut as 3 members in addition to supporting vehicle weight. Other suspension types include leaf spring, push rod, solid axle and torsion beam designs.

Your knowledge of automotive parts and the terminology is impressive. An excellent retention of the names and concepts is also impressive. A part time teaching job in automotive industry is not a bad idea. Maybe not as much money as KZbin, but more satisfying. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I am retired ASE certified mechanic and enjoy seeing inside of the parts.

Call your local trade centers, or community colleges where they teach automotive courses. Talk to the instructors. Perhaps you can join them as “guest”, so you would not need teaching credentials. Don’t expect much or even any financial gains, but the feeling is priceless. Best wishes.

I too am a retired ASE Certified Master Auto Technician. I agree, this guy should teach future auto techs. I sure wish I had videos like this when I was fixing cars. He should also teach other people how to make videos, his are fast paced and devoid of any wasted time. It's hard to watch other videos after watching these from speedkar99.

I agree. He has the commend of concepts and terminology. His videos are more than putting grinder to the parts. I think he works/owns a junk yard, so he has access to various parts and has to know the proper names to get them for the customers. My instructors also emphasized usage of proper terminology. -Disassemble, not take apart. Camshaft, not “what you may call it”, or gizmo. I too made some teaching aids from various parts as part of school projects, but not everything. When working in dealerships, I was too busy to cut old parts and actually gave them back to the customers as proof of replacement. It is interesting to see the inside of the various parts.

This was really well put together. The terminology and nomenclature through the lenses of materials engineering and vehicle dynamics/kinematics was spot on, and you took the time to focus on all the key components and mapping them to actual measurable/tunable/sensible parameters. The sway bar demonstration alone is truly one of its kind on the internet. Learned a great deal!! Thank you!

@@speedkar99 Seems to be a mystery to most, including Ford Techs and owners per most forums. I had a chevy 3/4 ton that would literally bounce like it was on a trampoline. Ended up being the brand new HD shocks. When I installed, I positioned in place, cut the tie wraps, shocks went up into position. I bolted in place. A week later pulled them off & my 10 year old daughter could compress them. A slight rolling road would get that truck bouncing like something out of jackass movie. New HD top of the line NAPA shocks. Must have been Friday, end of day, before a three day weekend manufactured set of four. Go figure, right.

Something to be said for the simplicity of a torsion beam rear susp over multilink in a road car. Even Mazda has gone back to with the new 3, which shows it doesn't have as many compromises as one may think.
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 4 жыл бұрын
Well that's what the media and Mazda/VW PR want you to think with thier new torsion beam setups. The reality is it is a cost cutting move that has been masked by adjusting other suspension parameters to make it's effects less apparent. Not much people would care because it's an economy car.

So is multi-link so much of an improvement over other setups that a 90's car with multi-link should out-handle a 2019 car with just Macpherson struts? Assuming any worn parts have been replaced? Love your vids!

By far my 06 g35 handles and rides like a dream compare to a 2019 toyota Corolla and I'm saying this out of experience and nothing has been replaced on my g35

@@krischilamootoo6562 good to know. I would guess that would always be the case until new cars just way out do old car stiffness, but even that could probably be compensated with things like strut tower braces etc. Better suspension geometry is just better.

Agreed. Multi-link of past years (even on family cars like a Honda Accord) far out handles the cheaper cost effective suspensions offered now. The reality is not many people are buying cars for driving dynamics now, the masses want a car to go from A to B and won't benefit from the advantages of a more complex suspension geometry.

It depends,PSA can make some great cars using simple set-ups.New cars have better torsional rigidity which compensates to some degree;also improvements in bushing design make cars more comfortable.I drive a 2007 Ford Focus which has multi link suspension and it holds to the road exceptionally well and soaks-ups road imperfections with aplomb.I live in a Greek island with terrible meandering cliff roads-full of dangerous curves.In such conditions you see the shortcomings of carmakers like Toyota who can make some bullet-proof engines but in terms of chassis design it lags behind .

I have said it before and I will say it again.....YOU ARE AWESOME! what a great video. The portion where you shot the front suspension in action was amazing. I can't hit the like button enough....Thanks. BTW ..Do you wash your brothers underwear after every car dismantling or do you just fold em' up and put them back in his drawer??

I bought a 2007 Honda Accord LX (4Cyl) sedan with 100 K miles clean car fax one owner. I noticed the suspension was so rigid, I replaced the strut assemblies (all 4) with KYB but nothing improved. Now I have sand bags in the trunk to help absorb the bumps. Any idea how to solve the situation?
@speedkar99

What car are you coming from? Honda will be stiffer than a Toyota or Buick for example. You can also check your tire pressure and run smaller rim diameters with a larger tire sidewall.

@@speedkar99 I came from the exact make and model which got totalled in a crash after 10 years of ownership. Rims are the smallest available (15") with Goodyear Cofortread tires and 2 points below the recommended air pressure, yet still rigid. It's worth to mention, the previous owner was an over weight since the driver seat is crushed and I have to restuff it.

Hey, do you think you can do a water pump to pump the engine cooling water ? Especially electric water pump you find on electric cars ? I'd love to see that !

11:29 There’s one more benefit here. If pause the vid at aforementioned point, you can look at that right front suspension and imagine how the wheel turns to either side. Now follow: when turning right this right wheel moves a bit forward, when turning left it moves a bit back. In other words the wheelbase becomes shorter on the inner to the turn car’s side and longer on the outer to the turn car’s side. What’s the purpose of it?
