For most consumers who lived during the crash, they barely or didn't even know what's going on. They even enjoyed the price of video games dropping cheaply. It was just the video game industry that had to worry. They would only become aware later of the crash when it was being discussed as part of history of video games.

I really loved watching this footage. My parents were very opposed to video games for me growing up in the 2000’s, and it really caused a division between them and me. They would always tell me _”you’re wasting your life, grow up”_ and all it caused me to do was not play video games when they were home. I would only play video games when they were working at their jobs. Video games brought me such great joy in my childhood. It’s a shame my parents couldn’t share that joy with me.

While watching your video, I was thinking about my mother and the first game that she let me play that I can remember was Q-Bert for the Atari 2600 and when your cousin showed that he got this game for Christmas a shot when up and down my spine and arms. Dad wasn’t around much because he was in the Military but my mother was. She loved Q-Bert and PacMan and later on my father introduced me to PC gaming. But it all started with my mother and even though she passed away back in 2020 I still appreciate her for introducing me to video games. I still have that 2600 and her favorite game Q-Bert to this day and they both still work. So thank you for sharing this video and your family with us.

My condolences for your loss. Lost my mom in 2021, and she was like your mom, she fed my love for games. She wasn’t good at them, and we would laugh for decades talking about her struggles with Atari Mini Golf. We would literally have tears in our eyes from laughing while watching her play because she was so bad at it, but she still tried so hard. She was the type of person who laughed along with us while trying to succeed, which of course made it so much more difficult. These videos just bring back such great memories and feelings. People who bad mouth video games, and believe me, people bad mouthed them way back in the 1970s, have no idea how much fun families had with video games, and in most cases, brought families closer together.

This had to be such a surreal time; the console division of Atari desperately trying to get out of their tailspin (too late to prevent Warner Communications from selling them), retailers furious at being overloaded with cartridges to the point of putting everything on discount to get space, and gamers in North America having a pretty fun time getting all sorts of games for cheap. That was the telling contrast of this period; game companies, retailers, & investors were all suffering the effects of the industry collapsing while actual fans of games had so many options because so many were on clearance. It's no wonder why so many younger gamers don't specifically recall a crash because at the time you could play so many titles; you just couldn't make real money on them.

That is seriously mind-blowing footage, your family is awesome. Hearing all about Sears and their legendary catalog brought it back for me. We used to have a Sears at my local Pheasant Lane Mall as one of the anchor stores. It's sadly since been long shut down and still remains vacant. I have fond memories of using their layaway program to get my first HDTV, a 40" Sony Bravia that kicked ass. I sadly lost that one in a housefire after having it for 6 years. Oh man, the day I paid it off, I said to my best friend, "Pinch me dude, I must be dreaming!" he responded, "It's not a dream, it's real. In fact, here." and he jokingly did pinch me, I was like, "Ow, okay dude, it's real!" and shared a good laugh with him. He had just purchased a 32" Bravia a couple weeks prior and I helped him set it up with his PS3 and 360, so that gave me much needed experience. Some time later, I bought another HDTV from Sears for some good friends of mine in Ohio who had recently got married. They were blown away that I did that for them. They still have it 14 years later and use it even now. Just shows how impactful the loss of Sears was for me and everyone who supported them was. I got so many wonderful things that would've been unobtainable otherwise thanks to layaway at Sears, to say I miss their presence would be a massive understatement. Same with Toys R' Us at its peak. Amazing footage dude, seriously, your dad captured some truly magical moments in your lives with that camera. Bless him and thank you for uploading this for all to enjoy.

I love these videos, made with such love and care. They bring back so many great memories. I’m a bit older than you, probably 6 or 7 years younger than your parents. My first video game Christmas was 1975 or 1976, when I would’ve been 13 or 14, I received Pong. We played that for hours and hours. I had played arcade games for years prior, so I had already become pretty good. Then in 1977, my parents told me about the Atari 2600, and how you can switch games by switching out cartridges. What a mind boggling concept ! We couldn’t afford it just then because we were going through financial difficulties. But a year later, it was under our Christmas tree. I can’t tell you how many Atari 2600 cartridges we wound up with, literally over 100. That Atari 2600 Pinball game your future mom was playing, I loved that game, my parents literally had to shut off the 2600 if we had to go somewhere and I was playing that game, I must admit, it was one of the games I could play for hours because I was pretty good at it. Your aunt getting Trick Shot for Christmas brought back some memories, I had totally forgotten about that game. I had so much fun with it, and if I remember correctly, it was a weird shaped metallic colored cartridge. I got the Atari 5200 for Christmas of 1982, and enjoyed it a lot, but at age 20, out of high school, I had other interests as 20 year old males tend to have. I still played games, but not as often. I remember still buying games and reading video game magazines as the crash of 1983 was happening. It wasn’t until 1987 when my co worker told me about Mike Tyson’s Punchout, that I became interested in consoles again. I was still playing games in arcades, and loved Punchout, so the idea of playing it at home brought me back to the world of consoles. My Mom and Dad, they fed and encouraged my video game addiction as a teenager, so I had many Christmases like your wonderful videos. My mom was still buying me video games for Christmas until her last Christmas in 2020, and my Dad, his last console was the Xbox 360. So he loved video games as well, though at age 83, he no longer plays them. Though I have fond memories of playing those Atari 2600 games with him when I was a teenager. Thanks for posting these videos, I’m sure they bring tears of joy to thousands of people who were Atari junkies.

I was wondering if you would ever have your aunt Michelle on the channel and talk about some of the videos that she's in

Tyler You have done it again! So much nostalgia. We were both born around the same time. I was born in 1985 and watching your videos brings it all back. Your Dad has made me Video more of my own kids . It brings us all so much joy to be taken back to our childhood. Thanks again!!!

As someone who was a teenager at this time and into the gaming scene, i can tell you that nobody noticed any video game crash at the time. It wasn't the big thing people today make it sound like. I had the Atari and then Colecovision in 1983-84, then around 1987-88 got the Nintendo NES. The entire time spending every weekend in gamerooms. Its not as if video games went away and nobody was playing them anymore.

All I can say is thank God for the Crash because without it the NES wouldn’t of saved the video game industry! Your videos are some of the best on KZbin! I hope one day you can do a Zelda Wind Waker and Resident Evil 4 episode Tyler!

Yeah the public stopped buying the crap Atari was shoveling and then good old Nintendo ripped the world a new one.

such great memories! I have some vague memories of the atari stuff, though I wasn't born til 79 so didn't have much. but I still appreciate this look at the post-crash era and y'all still getting games!

I loved Atari then, and still play it at times today. I don't have my original 2600 system anymore, but I managed to find another one in decent condition. I have a pretty good game collection, too, even ones I didn't own then. Thanks for the video, so much nostalgia here. Made me wish I was back in those days again.
