I felt so sad for Sandy. She was having the time of her life with her new little friend. She was running and playing and clearly enjoying what she believed was her new home for just the two of them. Then suddenly you could see she was suddenly looking like she realized she was just the step child and she shut down. I saw her looking like she was rejected all over again. It's heartbreaking. It has always taken us time with our new rescues. I've always known though, that once I can get them to trust me they will come around and learn to play again.

You’re thinking about it the wrong way. Sandy is being given a second chance at a childhood she’s never had so she can find her forever home.
@iLollerskate
@iLollerskate 3 ай бұрын
She wasn't feeling rejected; rejection is too complex an emotion for a dog to register. She was frightened because A) she was in a new place, and B) the first dog is much bigger than her. Then that dog didn't do a good job reading or respecting her social cues, which pushed her further into her shell. The bigger dog was just trying to be friends, bless her heart, but she was quite pushy about it. The second dog has great dog skills--I love how he created space when asked to do so, and even turned his back to demonstrate that he wasn't a threat. Good golden boy. For anyone who may be reading this, it's best to give new dogs two weeks to get used to their new environments before introducing them to resident pets (and scent swap with blankets, toys, etc. over those two weeks); you can see how overwhelmed Sandy was to begin with, and adding new dogs into the mix was just too much for her, which is why she shut down. After the acclimation period, the dogs' first face-to-face meeting should take place A) on neutral turf so that neither dog feels the need to defend "their" space, and B) through a barrier like a gate, so that they can each feel more secure. If they appear to be doing okay through the gate, it can be opened, but both dogs should be dragging leads in case they need to be separated quickly. During this time, owners shouldn't interact with either dog unless absolutely necessary, as human interaction adds an additional stimulus to an already tense situation, and can even prompt jealousy (i.e., resource guarding) from either or both dogs. And on the subject of resource guarding, the dogs shouldn't eat or play with toys together until they've forged a friendship--perhaps never, if they're inclined to guard them. If the acclimation period and first meeting are executed in this manner, the dogs will have a much better chance of getting along. In any case, it seems it turned out okay here, so that's good.

@@iLollerskatethe two week period is what I put new dogs through when I first rescue them. Give them time to adjust to their new surroundings and meal routines before I begin the socialization rehab process. The kennels they're in I tend to separate from the other rescues I had who are socializing, and when the two week period is up, I gather up their blankets and beds to move into a free enclosure with slightly more room that is next to other dogs. This allows them to get introduced to their neighbors for about a week before I introduce them to social play time where I wrangle the mutt montage into a pasture for them all to run around and play in. Afterwards I introduce the dogs to different people I know and start the process of human socialization. Feeding with other dogs to curb food aggression. False grooming sessions to get them used to grooming tools and vacuums. Minor physical disciplining (essentially putting dogs into vulnerable submissive positions when they act aggressive, no hitting or slapping). And after the dogs show signs of progress, I begin rehoming by putting them up for adoption in flyers, internet posts, and word of mouth. Completely transforms the dogs from frightened aggroed biters into loveable and eager babies. And I ensure they went to the right families and not to someone who's just gonna dump them off again. My solo operation went on for a few good long years before food became expensive.

Yeah and that is very understandable because just put yourself in her place and you would be the same way I only had one rescue as a kid and when he got home he was very excited with me but scared of everything else (he was a pitbull) and it took him about a year to get comfortable enough to bark at anyone (we believed he was abused before we got him) he would even cower Everytime my parents grabbed a broom to clean something but he was my best friend and brother and would sleep with me every night then we got another dog (who was born a few weeks earlier since someone on Facebook was selling their dog's puppies) and he treated her like he did with my little sister when she came home. And that was looking at us like "hey this thing isn't permanent right" but after a bit he came around and was great with her

All good in the end, however, When a Doberman froths at the mouth it is a bad sign. Anxiety, heat exhaustion, something they ate upsetting their stomach. In this case probably anxious anxiety. Should have removed him until he calmed down. Or cooled down.

I had a wonderful border collie dog as sensitive as Kobe. One day we were going for a walk and a lady with a spaniel was coming the other way. She said that she wouldn’t be able to walk past us because her dog was so frightened of other dogs. I didn’t tell my dog what to do because I knew he knew better than me! My dog turned sideways and sniffed the ground but the other dog still wouldn’t pass so my dog lay down and the other dog trotted by happily. My wonderful dog died last year and I am still crying over him.

As for all the comments regarding "don't do this, do that", animals especially rescued ones are very unpredictable and varies from one to the other. There is no one way of dealing with a situation like this. You try one and if it doesn't work you try the next, over time you get a feeling of which ones work best for you. They got the basics right like introducing them to the home before the dogs and then introduced one dog at a time. I would have the first introduction away from the home, so that there's no territorial aggression involved, but that's my personal preference from the dachshunds we've fostered, since they're very protective of their homes. Well done for taking on some pups in need. No better love that the love from the rescued pup :-)

The most valuable advice is that you let them get used to their new environment for a few days. Then start slowly ramping up interaction at a pace that works best for the animal
@toxicthewolf9videos
@toxicthewolf9videos 3 ай бұрын
Exactly! While one method might’ve worked for a certain rescue animal it doesn’t mean it’ll work with all rescues, plus depending on the animal or animals the rescues are being introduced to then the way you introduce them may be different, especially like how you said your dogs were territorial so it was done on mutual ground to avoid territorial aggression. Some pets may not be territorial or have been trained to actually help rescues get used to their new surroundings and that they’ll be living with the animals that already live there.

Hi, we foster abused dogs, so a very similar situation to yourselves. Firstly, I am thankful for you taking on this responsibility, not everyone can do it. What I would suggest for the next time,when introducing the fosters to your own dogs, put up a baby gate in a door way, have your dogs on one side and the fosters on the other. You know how your dogs will react to the situation, the fosters being honest, you have no idea, it's safer for all involved to have a physical barrier. The gate also allows the fosters to back away, don't worry, if they do, it's all part of the getting to know each other phase.

I assume you have to be careful to how the foster react to a gate. Don't some dogs become very protective at gates? I could imagine for some it puts them into defender mode and could increase aggression.

@@nostalji93 Yeah, a leash and barriers are not great ideas for a first encounter. Unless the rescue is very obviously aggressive and of a potentially dangerous race (one that can deal damage not like tiny pickle lol) I don't see the point.

Once we had two dogs show up at our house, they had escaped from their owner’s back yard. I spent a good part of the afternoon and an entire tri tip roast trying to get them into my fenced yard, hoping to get them in a safe place so I could start looking for their owners. They gobbled up all the roast beef, but nothing worked trying to corral them to the yard, every time I got too close, they would run away. As a last attempt, I brought my own dog out on a leash, let them get acquainted, and then walked my dog into the back yard, and both of the dogs followed immediately. They didn’t trust me, but felt secure with my dog. Sometimes another well adjusted happy dog is all you need!

Honestly I think your dogs handled that really well. Sometimes they got too curious for the puppies' comfort but they knew when to back off and how to give space. That's so necessary for dogs meeting other dogs with trauma. Obviously this is very dangerous and can backfire massively but I think you guys handled this really well, making sure the dogs didn't overwhelm the puppies too much. I reckon it definitely helped having them sniff the bedding and blankets of the other dogs so they had an idea of the other dogs too. That's so incredibly important when introducing any animal to another. My only bit of advice is to not let your dogs approach a cornered animal, like when Sandy moved towards the corner and Moki came up to sniff her. That can cause a lot of tension if she decided in that moment to run instead of grumble or snap. Other than that this was amazing work and I love how attentive you were to the puppies body language and fear!

What I would do for any nervous dog is to lay on the floor with them, while giving treats. Laying down helps them to begin to calm down as it's completely opposite to seeming a threat. And the bath/shower as soon as they come home was obviously necessary due to their little poop accidents, but it also helps a dog to begin to feel that you're more like a parent. Such a great video, well done you guys.
