How Netflix tried to beat Piracy (and why it failed)

Here’s why Netflix’s business strategy wasn’t enough to fight piracy.
Netflix's business model once had a complete monopoly over online streaming, which started to decline as more companies entered the market.
Subscribing to multiple services isn't ideal for everyone, and has lead to an increase in piracy in the last few years.
The general approach being - subscribe to a couple of services and pirate the rest.
Netflix definitely has done better than other streaming services like Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO due to its large library of exclusive hits like Stranger Things or Narcos.

The piracy rose again not because Netflix lost its monopoly but because all the streaming services are buying exclusivity deals. If these platforms competed only with quality of service then piracy would still continue to decline. But unfortunately every exclusivity agreement is a monopoly on a product. You prevent customers from getting that product unless they buy into your platform and no platform has all the films a customer is interested in. The only legal solution is to buy into all of those services but while paying 8 dollars a month for watching whatever you want is easy paying 80 is not. Personally I find exclusivity agreements despicable and inherently anti-consumer. Every single motion pictures company that cries piracy is full of shit as every single one of them gives monopoly to one or other platform. Without exclusivity deals where all the content licenses can be bought by all platforms the focus would shift to making the best service possible. Moreover this can only improve the quality of first party productions as when they are sold to other platforms they will still earn money, potentially even more if the product is popular enough that every platform wants it. Remember that making a first party exclusive does not earn any money directly. It simply vaguely encourages new customers and increases retention of old ones, however sale of a license is a pure profit.

i can pay hundreds of dollars *PER MONTH* to access all streaming services and only watch a show or movie while *THEY* decide to feature it (once they stop featuring it, im screwed if i want to watch it again) all that is assuming my ISP doesnt decide to throttle my speeds or the network isnt congested AF or i can buy a few hard drives, install an ad blocker and a good antivirus, then go on the pirate bay and permanently own literally every movie or TV show ever made in bluray quality, and i can watch them as many times as i want without worrying about internet speeds or big companies deleting them, all that, for the cost of the storage medium and the initial download and these companies wonder why people like me still pirate movies and tv shows

@@omega-man1736 Started out with RW-CDs, RW-DVDs. In 1996, the company I worked for bought me a CD burner for $1,000 and I took full advantage. Eventually moved to HDD storage, initially 300MB drives. Over the years as larger drives came out, I would replace the smaller drives. My new PC has 72TB total. That's nothing, in the PLEX community there are people with 200TB rack mounted servers filled with media. It's nuts.

Fun fact: I have a Netflix subscription and still pirate Netflix titles. ... Because their streaming quality is often so shit it's unwatchable, and their download times are more than twice as long as pirating those titles. Every original is a monopoly. And if there isn't an alternative, people will make one; Piracy isn't just _A_ solution, it's the most capitalistic solution, because monopolies are inherently toxic in a capitalistic society. ;) EDIT: This comment makes me look like some sort of white knight. I pirate everything i can, usually. The only reason i will buy anything is if the quality of the product is better than the one i can get for free, or if i respect the party producing the product enough. Examples of the former are relatively rare games from larger companies. Lets be clear, you probably will get better quality from pirated content than Netflix. That's because pirated content often have way better converted versions of a given movie, if not the original. Netflix on the other hand compresses their content to the very maximum, decreasing quality. I always watch blu-rays. When i go watch something on Netflix, i get the "Yuck" face because of the poor quality. You can get used to it, but it never changes the fact that it's shit quality regardless.

For me and probably many other non-US viewers it’s not just about the cost of all these subscription services - very often it’s about them not being available AT ALL, so literally the only way I can watch a certain movie or a show is through piracy. For example - Brooklyn 99, there are 4 seasons available on Polish Netflix, so it was all well and good and I watched them there. But then, where’s the rest? No other subscription service offers it so it’s not like I can switch. Why isn’t it available to me if I know it exists? Well, if you’re not going to let me watch the legal way, I’ll find another...

It's funny how it is looking like having streaming services and not a subscription TV service would be more expensive than just having say a DirecTV account and using your login info to go to individual channel websites and watch the shows you want on there. Netflix and Hulu (no ads) works out to over 25 bucks together. Amazon Prime Video would be another 8 I believe. And you're now in the basic DirecTV price range. Difference is the access to those channels gives you a login to get on their sites and access whatever archived shows, past or currently airing, they chose to host as opposed to being subject to what contracts are signed to show what where. It's ironic to me that it is looking like streaming services, a once amazing alternative to TV, are becoming a worse off option.

You got one thing wrong about history of Netflix. Renting physical copies by post wasn't their original business model. It was something they came up with when they realized that streaming service wasn't a feasible business due to too slow internet connections at the time. Streaming service was their original goal, they just started building it long before it was viable business.

Music Streaming made it so convenient to listening and downloading that I converted from pirate to Spotify premium account holder. Gave Netflix another shot that year... Found a few things of interest but noticed fairly quickly the lack of certain content of interest to me - Apparently, I was looking on the wrong platform. They then also notified me they'd increase the costs too by like 10-15% so I canceled my subscription once more and went back to downloading what I want - At least I tried.

Bootleg streaming sites (and bootleg disc makers of yesteryear) forcibly acquire content that isn't theirs, in violation of those content owners' rights. Then they extract profit from that content with ads or subscription fees. It may not be literally the same as high-seas piracy, but the end result is much the same -- criminals make money from other people's labor and resources, and in extreme cases, jobs and livelihoods can be lost. There are ways which are almost as easy to use as netflix and pretty much risk-free, which undermines your arguments somewhat. Well usually the easiest ways are the most used ones. "Watch xyz movie online free" is probably the most common way to illegally watch said movie, while the high quality ones are less accessible

While you will find pretty much only torrents if you google for "download X quality Y", it's not really difficult to learn how to use a downloader in combination with a warez site and a a file-hoster in the span of maybe an hour. That provides you with high level quality and a very low risk, due to file-hosters being in a legal gray area (at least here in the EU).

@@AspectEquity I'm not sure how reliable studies like that are. I read some along those lines too. The problem is that downloads from filehosters and Usenet are way more difficult to track than torrents. There just isn't a good way to do it, except to look at the total traffic generated by a filehoster and then guess how much of that are warez. Well, except for going for a honeypot, but even that will give you only a very limited view into the state of things. Honestly, if I had to guess I'd say that upwards of 75% of traffic generated by filehosters are warez. I find piracy incredibly convenient. I have used Netflix, but any interruption in WiFi, your ISP, or Netflix, and you get buffering. It's a hassle. Maybe it was just the app or hardware I was using, but it also crashed a few times. Having the file means that's never a problem. I am also used to using my HTPC remote. It's also very rare for piracy not to have what you're after.

Many pirate streaming sites with no ads or popups. You can also use a popup blocker. Pirate sites have every movie and box set for free, While Netflix costs £20 per month for 4k and has nothing on it.

great well thought out video I've often thought about this topic myself piracy will continue as long as there are a couple good shows on each service we as people don't care about streaming services we just want to watch what we want to watch when we want to watch it and not have to pay the earth for it or sign up to every subscription under the sun it seems that's not possible so piracy is inevitable unless you're rich and even rich people pirate (surprisingly)

You should be able to rent specific shows for a price on other platforms. It would mitigate that quite a lot. Profit of the rent goes to the creator but people stay at your platform so long you provide enough original shows yourself.

It seams like didgital streaming is taking the cable model. At first, there were like 60 channels, often each channel was pretty unique but some were more generic. Now there are 100s of channels each offering, something very specific. People are not going to want to pay $60 for internet then pay for like 4-5 digital streaming services at $10-15/month

Um have u not used any movie apps on iOS or android? They are so well made with captions on all languages even having 4K resolution, options to cast it or airplay and ads are pretty minimal, about the same as utube and having a jailbroken or rooted phone gives u the luxury of getting those ads removed completely. I would say those apps are more convenient then even Netflix or Hulu.

Well, there are plenty of sites that offer subtitles in many languages for all tv shows and movies, it is just a few extra steps. And there are video players that find the right subtitle automatically too. (I have a Netflix subscription, but not all titles are available in my country (Brasil), so from time to time I have to resort to the not so legal torrent version)

Rather than paying streaming services like Netflix to stop piracy , piracy should be praised since they help many shows to become popular. It's really surprising to see torrent downloaders having terabytes of archived content that couldn't be found anywhere else, collections of content that are exclusively only on torrents. It really helps developing countries to access modern entertainment media. Every time they try to stop it with technologies like DRM,millions of people in the pirating community works toward cracking it. Pirating cannot be stopped 🙌_*

Pirating has never been that hard. I have been using private trackers for over a decade. The only time I ever got a virus was from pirating a fallout 3 dlc off thepiratebay, thought they could not slip something into a pack and it still ran. Never got any C&D either.

After seeing this pop up in my feed I read through the comments. I did MANY double takes to see you had less than 1k subs. The quality of this video I thought you would of been a small production company. Here is one not sin to get you to making money. ( I hate that they changed the needed metrics. I was making money with my diy videos but had under 100 subs but near the view metric)

@@AspectEquity true but the income helps a channel grow and for me helped invest in equipment to make the channel better (tripod, editing software,etc) with such a large barrier to entry now I've lost most of my motivation to pursue making videos where it as a fun hobby before. It helped keep me motivated to want to keep going knowing that I would be able to help off set some of the cost because the quality of my content was terrible from a production stand point, but at least helpful. I was not in it to turn a profit because that ship sailed many years ago, but it was at least nice to get a little kick back on your efforts. But that is just my opinion. Also my opinion I believe YOU deserve to get compensated for your efforts and the quality of your work as you have done a fantastic job! Not only with this video but with the others I have now binge watched as well!
