It is credited with popularizing location-based and AR technology, promoting physical activity, and helping local businesses grow due to increased foot traffic. However, it attracted controversy for contributing to accidents and creating public nuisances. Various governments expressed concerns about security, and some countries regulate its use. By early 2019, the game had over a billion global downloads, grossing over $3 billion in revenue. The game also had over 147 million monthly active users as of May 2018.

They do. They listen to their investors, and focus on their ESG scrore, since gamers have no backbone and will continue to pay and continue to play anyway. And no, they are not trying to appeal to an LGBTQ+ audience. They are just using them.

To be inclusive, they're excluding 50% of the world population like huh? Why couldn't they just Included everybody and let the user pick. Using terms like inclusive is deliberately misleading, when it’s exclusively for a very niche minority of individuals who probably wouldn’t all agree with going this direction of removing gender options. By definition that is excluding others by the vast majority. That isn’t how the rest of the world works at all.

I have an easy solution. Add stuff without taking away stuff. If people want the character they've had then boom it is available. If people want to change their stuff up then they can go in and change it up. No one would complain as they roll out more if they don't have to change it until it is good.

It is a brain-dead choice by Niantic. These are avatars we grew to love for 7 years. Give us options to change them, not force changes. Not to meantion how many items and posses have anything from glitches to not working as a problem. There is no defending them on this one. The charac6er models look bad on top of all of it. Not to mention the whole idea of trying to look more realistic and a pokemon game is lafably stupid. Dumb updates, boring events, and bad communication with community. No one should be giving Niantic money.

The problem here is they took it upon themselves to change our avatars without asking us rather than introducing this update and letting us change and customize from where we where. My avatar looks like it was replaced by a fallout 4 synth and is trying to convince me that it's not a synth. Haiyah.

I’ve heard sooooo many people say “so what, it’s a free game. Stop playing if you don’t like it.” No, no, no, my friend. The free to play model relies on the purchase of optional in game content to generate revenue. We give them our money to support the development of a game we love. It’s okay if you can’t or refuse to spend money on in game content but not sure how much fun they’d be having if a large amount of players weren’t contributing financially to the games upkeep and expansion. And Pokémon isn’t just Pokémon Go. The fans have been collecting, catching, and have an emotional attachment to a franchise that has been around for decades… you don’t just… stop. 😅 I hope so badly Niantic listens.

Definitely enjoy customization but this was not a great idea how to implement it. I wonder if they could have just added a third nongender base avatar instead of redoing the whole thing. No issue trying to be inclusive but the idea needed more polish. Im wondering if this was created by humans or AI as i dont think humans would have signed off on the babyface bonanza avatars we have now Why redo an entire system instead of just adding to it?

I noticed even streamers and other people that do not or have not played the game have seen the update and given negative feedback. Niantic has truly done it bad on this one. If they do not fix this mess, they could have a potential boycott of the game. Honestly though, with them, something like that would need to happen so they can finally listen to player feedback

Honestly all they need to do as a first step as a damage control, would be to give us the old male and female models as a options and then add the old male and female faces too. Then they will need to start fixing the clothes on different size characters, but those can be done after those first steps above. Or listen to the feedback and give us that jokingly shared 14,99€ "old avatar characters back" ticket. 🙄

Dude all they had to do was make a 3rd avatar for ppl who don't see themselves as male or female. And the clothing didn't need to fall under one bracket. I did think i need to be skipping throughout female clothing. But what's more crazy is up to this point nothing is being truly said about why they really did it and when itll be fixed. This "updated" has beed out for so long and we didn't like it then so why are they so hellbent on forcing it on us.

Plusses: I no longer have a broken spine. Minuses: almost everything else. Siigghhhh. I did finally find a body type that didn't look so awful. Using the custom sliders is the only way to get something close to right. I don't like the new faces at all. And not nearly enough hairstyles - they're still short is male, long female. :P

1:15 I will stop you right here, most of the countries know their % of population who do not identify as male or female and it's a small %. The solution is simple bring back the old models and keep the new models. Inclusion is about choice and diversity not a lack of choice and diversity. We are all different, give use the choice. 2023 remote raid pass nerf 2024 destruction of avatars At this point every year we can expect Niantic to ruin the game for no reason. I wonder what they are going to do in 2025? Maybe they'll make it so that we can't battle with our legendary pokemon, or maybe they'll turn all our shinies into regular pokemon? Or maybe they'll nerf the amount of daily trades from 100 to 10! Wow can't wait! In all seriousness all they really had to do was give us a couple of new hairstyle options and we would be thrilled. I get a lot of games are getting rid of male/female, but having 2 different main genders is important. Just call them type 1 & type 2, or maybe have a customize option that can blend both those types for the few people that'd want that. Instead they just took away the option to have any type of gender. I worked hard for years to be able to equip the level 50 jacket and I hate how it looks now. Even with the chest slider all the way to the left it still looks like I have breasts. Try it for yourself, put on the level 50 jacket and you'll notice your chest pop out a little bit. There's also tons of glitches that were added since this update, like certain moves don't have an attack animation anymore, like Dragon Ascent, and when someone joins your raid remotely you can't tell anymore because they got rid of the transparent animation for it.

I feel the issues with the customisation has been there since day 1, with the new models emphasising them a lot more. The original models looked awkward with their weird expressions and limited customisation. However the update has made the faces even worse.

The body proportions of the new avatars are wrong. They have a very long back, and also the distance between the hips and the crotch is unnaturally long. The end result is that no matter what I try to adjust, I look like Goofy.

I still can't forgive Niantic for the 7 months that it took them and Game freaks to fix the gimmighoul coin box feature. Sure there can be some models of phones that are not tested and can be accidentally left broken after launch. But when amongst the broken models are such obscure models like back then current Samsung flagship model of Galaxy S23 fold 4 and the back then latest galaxy flip. And then get contacted about those issues pretty much immediately, yet not even known Issues page entry. Only response I got was "there is currently an issue where player names that are 3 characters or shorter, those can't use that feature. Yeah sure my players name Jurtaani which is 8 characters long certainly qualified to that 3 letters or shorter. I mean i don't believe that in a company the size of Niantic, that there is not anyone who is using 2022 or 2023 galaxy phones of any kind or any 2022 or 2023 Xperia phones. Or if that truly was the case, then couldn't they get at least one of those above models for testing purposes.

This updated erased women, plain and simple that's what it did. No matter what you do to the sliders the "women" will literally always have a man crotch and walk animation, not to mention the overly long torso (proportionally women's torsos ARE shorter than mens). The best you can do is hide it behind baggy clothes, which just fuels how mysoginistic this update was. The only update they could do to fix this is to bring back the old models and just use those as slider bases. If they absolutely HAD to have an androgynous model then ADD it, don't take away what is the norm for 95% of the human race.

I sincerely do not think the reason behind the no-gender character is inclusion. I believe it is simply because it is much simpler in terms of design and programming, and it "happens" to be inclusive. Like you suggested, if they wanted to be inclusive, they would primarily include facial hair, height, and an age feature.

they keep releasing half baked features. I feel like they need to take a lesson from DBZ dokkan battle, honkai star rail and afk arena and dont release a mechanic if it isnt ready. There is also a difference between ready and unintended issues as well like afk arena players were not happy with the new collection hall features even though the feature was complete and ready it was just not as fun as intended or easy to do as intended and many players felt it wasnt worth doing and they listened and tried to fix it which its way better than it was. dokkan players didnt like chain battle so they are removing it. the biggest problems niantic has is that 1. they arent listening to the players or their QA and it shows in how half baked the game is feeling 2. They implement new features that clearly are not ready to launch and instead of delaying the feature to make it better they launch it in a broken state which makes everyone angry. 3. they roll back updates people like they are the only company i have ever seen take away features players liked genuinely if it wasnt pokemon the game would have shut down in 3 to 6 months after the raid nerf. I think pokemon company needs to consider taking the game away from niantic or threatening to give it to another studio because niantic is terrible even compared to other studios that do mobile games.

Why not have (male, female, then a ‘custom’ option which would be this version, but Also I don’t think this is a gender inclusive thing… they could’ve done a gender neutral or custom body and made it look GOOD. The proportions look off, and the detailing is awful. People are jumping to Gender Inclusivity to blame something when in reality, it just doesn’t look good. Once again if they had these exact same custom options but they looked like Fortnite characters, people would love it and wouldn’t give it a second thought. Please do not mistake the actual issue for what it actually is - which is ultimately very poor design

It has nothing to do with gender. The avatar system is half asses. Nothing is proportional. They only gave us VERY little options in general. Solution is to expand the avatar system to include as much options as possible, be it allowing them to be more skinnier, taller, shorter, larger, curvier, younger or older, etc.
