Pokémon GO's latest controversy involving the Avatar Update takes a bad turn, as it was revealed that they sat on negative feedback from internal testers and Niantic employees for almost a year and still released it in it's current bad state. This is an awful look for Niantic.

I never spent a single dollar on the game, and have put in reviews requesting improvements. And when the game issues are so big it has no enjoyment (there have been a few times, particularly one version that constantly crashed), I uninstall and stop playing. If I'm enjoying it enough, I play it. But I never spend money on a game unless the development and product are actually as good as they can be (majority of my switch games are secondhand, but they got my money for Splatoon DLCs because the heart is there)

I didn't spend this much a week but pretty much every month I dropped this in remote raiding and discord access to raid groups. Over level 40 and the remote raid pass limit made me chuck the game. This forced update helps keep me away.

I can't believe I spent literally THOUSANDS of dollars on this game. I am truly a fool! Since the avatar update I stopped remote raiding. I used to do 5 remote raids a day and 50-100 raids per week. I was basically a whale and I'm done spending money until they start changing things and getting better. I even skipped my first dinner hour in about a year. There were already countless things irritating us and frustrating us like constant white screens, invisible raid lobby glitch, glitchy and outdated gym system, go battle league issues, too many ticketed events, taking away old ar mode, etc. Every high level player was already extremely frustrated with Niantic in some sense before they did this, and instead of fixing these issues they gave us the worst "update" imagineable. I feel awkward every time I see my avatar. I paid money to make my avatar look cool and now it looks ridiculous.

I have spent literally $0 on my avatar. I agree whole heartedly my avatar now looks like a potato, but having spent nothing, it’s not a deal breaker. I still play daily, but prior to remote raid nerf and cost increase more generally, I spent about $100 a week and now I spend nothing. I’ve spoken with my wallet. One day, probably soon, I’ll shift all my shinies and rare mons to Pokémon home and be done with the game.

Honestly, the poor polish right off the bat made that decision for me, though I have a bias due to having low income 😅 Basically, I measure a game's quality by how fun or even playable it is with the micro transactions erased. Pokemon Go eventually became pretty fun, and after that big gym challenge change, actually fully enjoyable without microtransactions, as now we could reliably save coins and buy outfits and additions. As someone who has played on and off the entire time and never spent a dollar on it (but enjoys the incentive to go out on walks pretty much daily), my dog and I really enjoy the app and it's unique niche. I even like how in some cases, it's one of the only free ways to access mythicals in the main line games, since I wasn't there for various old events and can't purchase all the new games and DLCs

It’s like they are holding “Pokemon,” hostage behind a really poorly managed game. Pokemon Go wont last much longer like this, they are making the game less enjoyable with every update and event. Honestly, I’ve lost some of the love for the main Pokemon Nintendo games, and even the trading card game because of how the Pokemon Company has let Niantic handle POGO.

What's wild too, is that if they genuinely just fixed the gameplay issues, left it as it is, maybe if they were willing put the work into a high quality character maker, and worked on some truly big polish updates for a few years ready for that 10 year milestone, they'd totally have a viral resurgence. Like, the mainstream would probably have nostalgia for that one glorious Summer and go for it. Idk, add every single pokemon, update the models to the new mainline polished ones, and add a bunch of user-generous additions for people who play socially to feed the virality. Please, I really do miss the Pokemon Go summer, I barely got to join in with it due to being a broke kid with a crappy phone.

After their 230+ employee layoff a few months ago it makes me wonder if they took the cheap route and tried to replace highly skilled (and highly paid) technical animators and 3d modelers/artists with a low quality prefab avatar system module which was then handed off to jr level and/or less skilled devs to edit the models as best they could and then deployed it with no evidence of QA. My guess is that the reason they are indifferent to the major fix requests is that they simply don’t have anyone left (or enough people left) who could perform those fixes. If that is not the case and they choose to focus on monetization rather than patching then that’s even worse.

I can't understand why Niantic couldn't have just had the newer avatars coexist as a new option alongside the originals. Then they still could've been "inclusive" without alienating most of the player base only to satisfy a small percentage and I don't think it would've been an issue for mist, it probably would've been welcomed if only we had our old stuff. My avatar is absolutely awful, for one it doesn't even resemble any actual non-binary/trans people that I know irl and instead my "updated" avatar just looks like a damn pervert. I'm bummed even more because I worked hard this year irl to get healthier and gained my current rockin' bod and my old feminine avatar already basically represented that and it's a just shame that the option is taken away as soon as I aquire the body to match it. Tbh.... If you make your char fat enough it at least does resemble a female. Done it on one of my accounts. The other one looks kinda like a man with a wig.. unless I put on a certain skirt and cover the face a little... But naaah, let's lean into it. I made sure my friends also get the pleasure to look an my chars by sending them gifts. The best thing was when a friend actually contacted me if I'm okay... 😂 Sadly Niantic will probably see people using these options and take it as a proof for success. 😂

I don't understand why they couldn't just use the two characters we already had in the game as the base for this update. Then just add the ability to alter the character from there? They could have even just added a third option: boy, girl, or other/none. I was perfectly fine with my character and didn't even really care about changing his looks as long as I got to change his outfit... if anything I would have just wanted different hair styles and that's it... The update happened to me while I was playing so it was a huge shock for my character to look one way then flash and look completely different. Almost uninstalled the game right then and there just out of shock! I don't want a character that looks like me usually but even if I do I don't want it to look exactly like me. I want it to look like a prettier version of me. I like me cartoon or animated looks for characters anyway over realistic looking characters anyway. So more anime or stylized characters are more attractive to me. Sorry for rambling I'm just really upset about this. 😢

I know they won't revert the update, but they can do some basic things. 1) fix the legs so the avatars aren't bow legged. 2) fix the hands so they scale properly 3) allow a waist slider so women can have one 4) add a couple options to the base model so there are some clear male/female options 5) fix the clipping 6) fix the face and eyes 7) fix the skin as far as the tones plus not looking dull 8) i am blonde but the blonde options are limited so I'd like blonde hair back.

Game Freak and Niantic really can not afford to make these mistakes now. Palworld has proven that these games are dying and with these companies ruining the beloved world they created. The only thing in their future if they continue on this path is players saying their heartfelt goodbyes and leaving. Some may even rip away the bandaid and leave the entirety of the Pokémon world. I will be one of those players. Detective Pikachu brought back the spark of Pokémon that I thought was lost. But it seems I am better off spending my time and money elsewhere. This avatar update is only the beginning, and the world we know and love will be destroyed slowly but surely. R.I.P. Pokémon. You will surely be missed and will have a place in our memories.

Hopefully they start from scratch on new avatar designs. I mean, they literally have the pokemon franchise they could use as reference for styles with hair, clothing, etc. Have players choose between identifying as Female, Male, or Other. The following is a comments I posted with Niantic. I’m sure it’ll go in one ear and out the other . I have since deleted the app so I would not be tempted to go on the Pokémon GO but I still monitor what’s going on. here is absolutely nothing good about this. If you really wanna include everybody, give us a choice to keep our original avatar. I have been playing this game since July 2016 the direction you have been taking this game. I have been spending less and less money on the game. Congratulations now I am down to zero dollars to be spent on this game in the future Thank you

First time comment, but been watching you for a while -love your content! Ive walked away from other games (after spending alot)-this might just make me for quit for good. They dont care about players (look at remote raid pass farce and now this)why should we spend money or play this game? Its a shame I have mostly enjoyed my player experience and met many great people around the world, but being let down time and time again is making me rethink why I need to keep playing.

I swear it's like Niantic is going out of the way to piss their players off and push them away. It almost seems like they are trying to sabotage their own game. Make it make sense! I have never seen a company that just blatantly doesn't give a flying eff what their community thinks or wants - but I'm not a huge gamer so maybe this is common practice the gaming world, IDK. I bet that if they were dealing with anything other than the Pokémon brand, they would have folded up LONG ago!

Many of you complaining about this game don’t have the will to stop spending money. You keep showing them with your purchases that even though they screw up the game you will continue to play and spend regardless. I’m not saying stop playing, just stop giving your money to a company like niantic.

I'm the type of person who, if a company does something along this line, not only stops spending money on that one particular game, I look up a list of the games that company made so I can avoid buying them. Then, I go even further.....What are this company's other holdings? Does it have any other branches or companies under a different name? What games or products do they make? Do any of THOSE companies have any holdings? And, then they, and those companies *never* see another penny coming in their direction after the search.....Oh, they can keep on doing this stuff.....But, at least I won't willingly or knowingly be footing the inevitable bills incurred when they do.......

honestly kind torn on the avatar changes, on one hand my character looks more like me minus the face which looks like a baby. The other hand I've seen some avatars get done dirty, Especially women. I get the being inclusive but that means including everyone not just certain demographics. I do think a few visual changes and ( tweak dimensions, shading, more hair, etc..) could actually make this good.
