The internet would lead you to believe in order to have horses you need to be independently wealthy, marry a sugar daddy, or sell your organs on the dark web.
The truth is there are still tons of people out there working hard to follow their dreams!
So roll up your sleeves, pick up a pitchfork, and get to work ;)
Here is what an "easy" 12+ hour day looks like around here!
If you love thrifting and horse deals chek out this amazing trip I had to a tack sale!

I had wanted a pony when I was 5. Mom says I thought it could live in the basement. I never outgrew it. Got my horse at 39. I didn't want to be 80 years old and regretful that I never got a horse. He's been with me for 21 years now. Its not cheap, but you give up manicures and fancy hair salons. I wouldn't change a thing. 💕💕

I also feed a smart beet pellet mash to my boy, along with 3-4 quarts of Safe Choice Senior. And my hound dog's name is Huckleberry 😄 I have had a full time job making decent money ($18+ per hour) since I got Joker. I don't vaccinate him as much since he's older and he sees a vet when needed and is trimmed every 2 months or so. Trimming is $50 per, so between the cost of feed and the cost of trimming hooves going up...

I was lucky to get a pony when I was six. I named Freddy after my best friend (Yea, now there were two Freddies). Freddy the Pony was old but he was so beautiful he left to join the circus, or so I was told at the time. My dream when I retire is to adopt some elderly ponies/burros and name them all Freddy.

So happy for you that you finally got your horse. From your username I'm guessing he's a standardbred? I got my first pony when I was 7. My Mom had the horse bug, used her spending money as a teenager to rent a hack horse for an hour. Back in the day there were several riding stables in my area. All gone now. Anyway, when the family outgrew my parents' starter house, they got a place with enough room to have a few horses. And we had our first pony by the next year. Have always had horses and worked around them, including a short stint at the racetrack. Have done Camp as the horse person for close to 40 years. Could never afford to board them, so am eternally grateful to my parents for getting this place all those years ago. Getting old and too gimpy to ride now, but I still love them. We just have two ponies currently.

@@bernadettecartin yes, he is an off track Standardbred. I haven't even ridden him much...he's kind of a big dog. He got west Nile the month after I adopted him so we bonded strongly through his recuperation. Now, any time he is sick or injured, he breathes a huge sigh of relief when he sees me cuz he knows I will make it all better. Love him to pieces. It's humbling to be loved so much by a huge animal that could squash you like a bug. I also played the Parelli games with him. Great bonding tool. Fun too! I've been lucky enough to find personal homes to board he and donkey buddy...I've had Tucker for 18 years. I'm not a fan of boarding facilities...too much drama and too many equine illnesses floating around.

Horse lover here for life...now 71 years old. I convinced my hubby when I was around 37 years old to moving to the country and buy some acreage, a small farm where we could raise horses. Never had a horse in my entire life lol. Always loved them , always around them in some way shape or form but NEVER my own. Always someone else's. I lived in Louisville, Ky. at the beginning and worked 2 summers for free on weekeds for a few different trainers at Churchill Downs to learn about feeding, handling, bathing, vet procedures, etc for racehorses. Then we moved to Henryville Indiana to a small 13 acre farm We built an 8 stall pole barn with nice stalls and a foaling stall, I bought my first mare off the track and off we go! I also took classes every weekend at The Kentucky Horse Park and drove to Lexington, Ky to further my knowledge and education. I took foaling classes, basic horse care, basic vet care, on and on. driving 160 miles round trip every weekend for at least a couple of years. Anyway, we pulled the trigger, bought a small 13 acre farm, built a barn and fences and...well.....I have to say I am proud of myself and what I accomplished . We (or rather really I) maintained for almost 9 years. We ended up getting divorced, and, althought I tried, I could not maintain the farm, btoodmares, and 2 young girls on my own. I worked a full time job at UPS in Louisville, Ky and drove 45 minutes each way to work 4 days a week 10 hours per day. I got up at 3 am every morning as I had to be at work at 6 am 45 minutes away. .I fed horses, mucked stalls, watered, etc every morning. Then got my girls up and ready to go to school early and drop them off at my sweet neightors to wait for the school bus.....it was quite an adventure lol. Sorry so lenghty but YOU CAN DO IT IF you want to bad enough!!!!

I bought a rather old and smallish mobile home (6k) put it on acreage that a farmer sold me on a land contract for 25k. They were also glad to add the cost of improvements needed to the land, as even if we failed to finish the land contract, the improvements (well, septic, electricity) would improve the value. Lower Michigan, not too far out of a fair sized town. We did the vast majority of work ourselves other than digging the actual well, and hooking up the electricity. We bought a nice solid shed from a home that was being demolished. Jacked it up and hauled it on a hay wagon to our land. That was my run-in/stall. My mare was papered and cost $450 as a weanling. Breeding her when she was ready was $500 to a young, unproven stud with amazing bloodlines. I continued to add a pony here or there. Fenced the pasture myself with 5 strands of electric. I worked as a nurse assistant. Never made much more than 25k a year in my life. My husband was a laborer in a non-union shop (not great wages). Hay was bought at a local auction. Grain.. well, ponies that weren't world class athletes, need little or none. It can be done, depending on your expectations. I don't care what anyone says, ponies are far more economical and sturdy. Primitive little criminals at times... But my end game was having a saddle pony and breed a few nice individuals. It can be done.

Like probably most little girls, I'd always wanted a pony, but my parents wouldn't buy me one. At age 13, I persuaded them to at least send me on a week long "pony vacation". There I got to ride a beautiful gray tobiano gelding named Ivan. When I was back home and just thumbing through some horse classifieds, I found he was listed for sale at (if I remember correctly) around 6000DM, which would be about 3000€ today. I knew my parents wouldn't spend that money, so I started saving up myself. I never got to buy Ivan and for more than 10 years didn't have anything to do with horses at all, maybe save some beach ride every once in a while, until in 2008 I discovered there was a western ranch near my home that offered lessons. I went there, started taking lessons, and in 2010 bought one of their sale horses that no one else wanted. Takoda is a bay leopard gelding, assumed to be part Knabstrupper and part Thoroughbred, although nobody knows for sure and a I really don't care, for me it's about the horse's character, not about the pedigree. He just turned 27 and is still as fit as a fiddle, and I'm proud to say I've always been able to afford him on my own, without anyone helping me out or supporting me. Sometimes it's not easy, but definitely worth it.

Even here in the UK, where small ponies seem more popular than over on t'other side of the pond, very small size blankets/rugs can be hard to get. I ended up making rugs for them myself on an old, solid sewing machine when I found the ones I'd bought for my three littlies needed major alterations as they were not correctly proportioned.

@@TheCleverCowgirl If I were doing it again, I would buy one rug only, in the nearest I could get to the right size, and use it as the basis for all my patterns. If you have a heavy-duty sewing machine, your biggest issue will probably be getting the correct hardware, but fortunately, big dog and hiker sized hardware is usually sufficient for the tinies. One thing about fitting your tinies with tailor-made rugs, by the time you've finished draping them in muslins and fitting them correctly with gathers, darts and gussets, they'll be inured to anything and you could wrap them up in Christmas paper as a gift, if you wanted to! Because they are so small you can often use offcuts of technical fabrics which would be frighteningly expensive to use for a bigger horse. Of course our major problem here is relentless cold rain, usually with wind, so rugs get bone-achingly heavy to change, and everyone needs at least two or three, so there's a chance that there might be a dry, or at least dry-er, rug available. The old-fashioned canvas rugs could take a week to dry but fortunately technical fabrics are much faster to dry.

I am definitely supported by the Divine but still, not enough money and not enough health to have any pet let alone a horse. I depend on the kindness of friends to ride once in a while, or to try out things I learn about ground work for my horse fix. A couple of hours' ride at the walk and on the level can put me down for days with fatigue so. Daily chores are simply not possible for me. I still get to ride now and then and put to use some of the many things I've learned over the years but having a personal horse is just not going to happen for me. Not unless the Divine sends me another situation where I can ride when I can and for free. It's happened several times and I'm very grateful and it might happen again! You never know. :)

I’m exhausted after joining you on your shopping trip. I love your channel and watch every episode. I’m planning on outliving my last horse who is 21 now and I’m 82. Can’t bear the thought of leaving her to someone else. Wish you well in your selling business. I always check eBay for things. Have sold my saddles there, bought some too.

Go for it, Robert😃 I had horses for decades but at 68 old injuries have come back to haunt me, plus recently diagnosed with severe spinal stenosis so sadly I don't even have that last ride I've been yearning for, left in me😥 I just have to get my horse fix from the ground when I visit my kids and on the farm. It's a work in progress to turn my almost 4 yr old Grandson into a cowboy and ride his pony more😃 He loves big tractors and hunting with his folks more at this stage.

Interesting. I'm your age, but don't think of myself as a "senior". Guess I am. Just keeping my 2 pony size horses keeps me working hard. I don't ride them anymore & hopefully they will live many more years yet. I've thought when I'm even older that I might downsize to miniatures with any new horse. I can't imagine my life without a horse or two in it.

CC thanks so much for your video. It was fun to go shopping with you! You sure are a bargain hunter! You work so hard caring for your horses. They are beautiful. And you are so knowledgeable. I used to ride western in my mid 50s and loved it. Except the time l fell off and bruised my hip and it was a bad contusion. Out of work a couple weeks. When l first started l wasnt able to post much cuz my legs were too weak. Once l got stonger l could go around the arena 70+ times without stopping! They horses name was Hotshot and used to be a race horse. With that name l was a little scared. The owner of the stable said she could saw me get off balance and he would move and scoop me up! How cool. They asked me to ride a horse that was all ready tacked up one day and l was reluctant but rode Eastman...the one l fell off of when the cinch was too loose and l was falling and tried to stay on by grabbing him with my feet which told him to canter and l fell off Boom! I hope to start trail riding in the spring at a place in the Bristol Mountains in Upstate NY. Nice to chat with you. Have a happy and prosperous New Year and stay healthy!

I was thinking for the New Year, I might try to be a nice person--already too challenging. I'm in CA and if I could send you a busload of homemade churros, extra lard, I'd drive them myself. (My ears are pinned back & I might kick.) Cracked up when you mentioned you have a Hubster(!)--& he almost got a shoeing! Oh, my stars. Forgot you might have a husband---in your spare time. Love that you are as practical w his presents as you are at auctions w tack or bidding. Enjoy your vids, but today? Felt odd, like I should be helping, not kicking' it. Love watching you work. Dinner time: Think I'd better find a churro & some ice cream. Happy New Year.

I always love the appearances of Tiny in your videos. Because I grew up with horses and was the person who pushed to get some barn cats when I was 5, I remain cat person to this day. I can’t imagine having horses without cats and a dog (we usually had two farm dogs). Are horses expensive? Yes, but certainly not out of reach expensive. If I did not live in the city now and made a little more money, I would love to have a a herd of three. For now, I have two house cats ☺️❤️

Great video - hard working and enterprising. I enjoyed reading all the comments from all the other "normal" people who have found ways to keep their horses and ponies. I was 50 when I bought my pony and considerably older now. She's retired out at grass and I probably should be! I have had a wonderful time with her, and like many people have done extra work of all sorts to keep her. Live this life and follow your equine dreams.

🤩🤩CC, you certainly live up to being a good consumer; no one budgets in my family and it ends up total chaos, so I do it, like BOGO, coupons, wearing each others' shoes, spray 'n wash instead of buying new shirts all the time, those $5 gloves were a steal; and what doesn't fit you or yours, you can sell in your online, e-commerce store. Great show and ideas! Many that I know are working 2-3 jobs, gigs, contracts, so keep on rockin there.

I had wanted a horse when I was around 7 or 8. I wanted to know everything about them. I did get a chance to ride a pony but obviously didn't know how. I still love them at 57. But back then as a city girl who knew no one nearby who had anything to do with horses I simply didn't have an opportunity to get involved with them. These days are so wonderful that there's information like this out there. I enjoy living vicariously through you. Thanks

Hi. It can be expensive to own your horse, but it is the best way. I found a really cheap field and then i bought, each week exactly what my horse needed. Not fancy stuff or xtras. I took horses straight from the racetrack. To give them a nicer life.. i hope. I rode them all myself, ive had 7 in my lifetime, all beautiful, intelligent thorobreds. Im not at all competitive. My greatest pleasures were spending all day with them, riding out on our own and seeing them accept things in their stride and understanding. I worked in the evenings.in later years i had a horse lorry, so we travelled about, riding pictturesque routes, staying away, from yorksire to Cornwall, lovely. They always came to me on 1 legbut gradually calmed down, but they never lost their willingness and forwardness. It was something i really wanted to do so , so i went without other stuff. Im glad i did. My last horse has died and im in my 70s, and i miss the way of life i created for myself. There is no such word as cant.
