Yeah because if I was a politician running a country and found out that some hackers stole $81million from a government bank, I wouldn't want the citizens to know about it either. I was deployed in the navy during the Sony attack, it was mentioned in a briefing and followed up with “the movie The Interview is off limits to service members. Don’t see it in theaters, don’t download it…. Simply avoid it.” Apparently there was fear that theaters in specific Asian countries would be attacked for showing the movie, and movie files for download would be travel vessels for malware. Its wild how much turbulence that movie was able to create.

The bank heists were exploited through primarily social engineering. While WannaCry depended on an exploit developed by the NSA that was leaked nearly a year prior to the incident. I find it unfortunate that detail wasn't mentioned in this reporting. The NSAs policy of keeping strategic ability to break systems rather than help secure them puts us all at risk. Generally speaking exploits in old software are cheap because its the developers themselves and security researchers that are finding and publishing these exploits so other developers can learn from it. That also is how sysops make decisions about maintaining comparability with legacy systems or updating because a new exploit exists. The NSA withheld this information from Microsoft. It also shows North Korea leet hacking abilities isn't so amazing after all. They in fact bought the exploit from another group that got a hold of the leak.

@Maxjoker98
@Maxjoker98 2 жыл бұрын
So very true. You don't see the North Koreans burning WebKit One-Click Zero-days. You see the legitimate console/phone jailbreak community finding and burning those. It's not a zero-day anymore if there is a patch available, it's just an admins responsibility. Sometimes people treat hackers like a force of nature, something that can't be prevented by precautions. It's not; almost all of the "threats" that you hear about are actually just bad engineering, exploited by the lowest common denominator(1 out of 10000 npm dependencies is now malware? Great, good luck catching that. Didn't update WordPress in time? Yeah, it's not yours anymore). Also people often misunderstand "cyber-attribution", the linking of an actor to a malware or attack: The problem is that there are usually no hard facts to be found - Everything that *could* be found on a computer could be left there intentionally or placed there or be constructed entirely. So basically people are guessing, which is okay as long as you're not basing your foreign policy on that. Guess what's happening everywhere. If you think that's far fetched, the existence of NSA tools for this were leaked as part of the Vault 7 Leaks(UMBRAGE). These things are not technically complex, expect them to be commonplace. Also regarding the TLAs notorious exploit horting, that's so stupid. TLAs make themselves targets, while endangering everybody that uses a computer. You'd think that a government that doesn't want to be hacked would invest in closing security-related bugs. NOPE. They actively pay money to keep these bugs open, and prevent them from being discovered. Has there actually been an example of this leading to something good? Guess we'll never know, secret court, secret evidence. Has this been used to trace and molest dissidents and journalists? Yes. All that "cyber" talk in the news is very misleading sometimes. People have got to be careful, and question the motives at play. If a large company like Equifax leaks 150 mio. records because they didn't patch their systems and then blames the big bad Chinese hackers, then that really has nothing to do with hacking. That is careless neglect. I've been a better admin since I'm 16yo (always patch your stuff!), and I'm sure I could have fired up metasploit to exploit old unpatched software when I was 14. I can't imagine that Equifax couldn't have prevented this with their million-dollar leadership. They just didn't want to fix their issues, and blaming the Chinese was easier than admitting a fault(and probably cheaper too). And if I hear about one more f'ing Exchange-server hack by the big bad China/Russia/APT/whatevercyberbullsh1t I'm going to loose it. 1999 called, they want their shi11y proprietary slow-AF non-compliant insecure mail-server for Windows 2000 back. If you run MS Exchange in 2022 you deserve what you get. And if that means that whatever region doesn't have water or electricity because your emails are finally encrypted(in a bad way) that has little to do with APT's. Let's hope nobody has to go to war over this political fear-mongering related to software that is just garbage... And yes, for that opinion I expect to be on some kind of list. Hello TLA TA! I hope you're having a nice day, and maybe a giggle ;)

In the Philippines it was big news as those same casinos were laundering for politicians and organized crimes. The casino's not knowing is just BS they are just so used to it that they did not bother to know if it was North Korea, a Filipino politician or triad/yakuza/Nigerian organize crime. I did not even know until this video that they regulated it, cause Filipino politicians were so against regulating the casinos. Cause according to them "people would just go to Macau or other places if the Philippines change the law.
