In the context of "Practise social distancing" we are talking about performing something, so it's a verb. I'm Australian, so I use British English. I'm sorry if it upsets you that the entire world doesn't "speak 'murican" 🙄

Lady Raven I learned German with some books and I went to Germany for like 3 years and I went to school there so I needed to learn it. It’s pretty hard to learn but it’s worth it tho, it’s a pretty language.

Love it! I wonder if Germans hug/cuddle more than other nationalities. In the UK our impression would be that Germans are even more reserved than us! But my experience is different. I don't think I'd seen someone jump into another person's arms - except in films I guess - until my German friend did this once. We were at a pub when a couple of friends she hadn't seen for a while arrived. She immediately ran to them and jumped into a group hug! And when she was leaving to go back to Germany the first time we must have hugged for 10-15 minutes while waiting for the coach to arrive. I've finally got around to learning German during the lockdown - so it's nice to have some distractions like this.

I did not know 'kuscheln' but it reminds me of the Welsh word 'cwtch' (pronounced 'kutch', to rhyme with 'butch') which is the Welsh word for a cuddle or hug). I never thought there would be that link between these two languages!

Apparently, the Welsh word is ultimately a borrowing of the French word "couche". Not sure whether the French word is ultimately Germanic or if German also borrowed it from French, but there you go!

@@talideon it's borrowed for sure. but as "une couche" is rather a diaper i would prefer the verb "coucher" wich means to lay down (or even more explicit things...) to refer to "cwtch" or "kuscheln"

"Bär" without the "Kuschel-" is used to describe big muscular slightly intimidating guys. A "Kuschelbär" is usually at least slightly on the chubby side.

As you mentioned funny things and Austria. There is a word for huging in the south east of austria... Basically it describes hugs like grandchildren get/give to their beloved grandparents and vice versa... The word is (in dialect) "o-holsn". Which could be transformed into high german as "ab-halsen". Working collegues from a different part of the country looked bewildered at me when i used that word.😂 Oh and then we also have "schmieren" or ("zuwi schmieren") which is cuddling and putting cheek to cheek. (the ones in the face).

Und, nachdem die erste, typisch norddeutsche Zurückhaltung wegplatzte brannte die Hütte! Was natürlich Zucker für die Schauspieler war! Leider ist die next Vorstellung ja abgesagt worden. Und alles, was Meinfrau für meinen Geburtstag geplant hat ist nun geplatzt. Sie ist deswegen etwas mürrisch. Aber die Gesundheit aller geht nun einmal vor. Well here is a Funfact for everyone If you want to hug someone (whom you don't know well yet), you can ask: "möchtest du einen Knuddler haben?" or "darf ich dich knuddeln?" which brings me to the word "Knuddler" Knuddler is not only one of many forms for someone who wants to cuddle. No, "Knuddler" is also (and that is the Funfact) the german Name for the Fairy Pokemon Attack "Play Rough"! Why you ask i don't know but it is so!

Trixi and Eric will enjoy quarentine. Quarentine is when they will enjoy cuddles, there is nothing else to do. Eric is likely to out on weight, making him a great cuddle partner, a belly that big.
