1972 short film instructs locals in Churchill, Manitoba how to avoid injury from a polar bear. Bears frequently wandered through town and into their trash dump. Film was shown continuously only in the tiny village movie theatre before the main feature. Cree titles seen at end.

I've so far proven adept at avoiding polar bear attacks. My technic is simple. I don't live anywhere near the north pole.

There's not that much food where polar bears live, so it's very polite to get down on the ground to ensure an effortless dining experience for the King of the Arctic, the majestic Polar Bear!

If a Polar Bear looks like its going to attack you... simply stop, drop, and roll. Then kiss your arse goodbye.

Windfall, Alberta 1959; we kids would all play in the dry dump (const. rubble, crates, welding rods and metal) and build towns.......in minus 40 below....then get a match from one of the trucks dropping stuff and burn it down. In the fall "wet" dump from the cafeteria on the pipeline we'd sit and watch the bears come in to feed, mainly grizzly. around sunset all would BAIL: then just about dark Big Boy would come in and have the dump all to himself. He was another 50% larger than the 2nd largest bear!! Burp.

Humans are a source of protein for polar bears. I didn't hear the narrator actually say that. It also seemed like the narrator was trying to downplay the seriousness of confrontation with a polar bear. With the disappearance of sea ice due to global warming, bears are often on the verge of starvation. Especially mother bears with cubs they either have to produce milk for or babies who are transitioning to meat but don't yet have hunting skills or body size to do it on their own. As a species, humans are defenseless. We have no claws, no significant teeth, we are not sufficiently muscled to fight a bear. We are easily subdued with few injuries to the bear. This needs to be emphasized when you are talking about these bears. Hardly Winnie the Pooh.
