Take it for me a guy who’s been married twice. The 50% divorce statistics is bull! The divorce rate across someone’s lifetime in the US, Canada, the EU is certainly approaching something like 65%. Women just will not settle over the long-term and that is what Lifetime marriage requires for a woman: settling. No matter how high value guy or how good looking or how captivating they will always be something you will fall down on. You will get older, less attractive, more boring, predictable, and unsexy.

Agreed, divorce rate is like the unemployment rate: 40% don’t do anything, but we’ll call it 3.5%. Divorce rate will remain at 50 or tick up a percent or two, but reality is much higher and increasing. Women don’t need a reason anymore, they can run their own household with your money now. Of course not. If the whole entire reason marriage was invented in the first place was so that women had a way to get access to resources. If breaking a marriage gives you access to resources without having to settle for a life-long commitment... It's a no brainer really. Why would you make a life-long commitment for something you can now get for simply entering and breaking an agreement? Add on top of that the ability to make your own money in the current system, and it's a double no brainer in terms of not staying long term. Anyone afforded this situation as a possibility would be stupid not to take it. So i don't even blame them... It's your fault. Don't get married. Or if you do want to, rise up and slay whoever is in control of that institution and rebuild the terms. Those are your two options. The rest is just bitching.

Being in an unhappy marriage is not a good place to be. Relationships during the honeymoon phase is great. Unfortunately this state doesn't last that long, that's when the issues start, and it gets worse with age. Be thankful to be on your own. Be good to yourself, eat well, don't indulge in too much alcohol, take sometime everyday for exercise. Treat yourself to decent clothes, a decent haircut, and some nice cologne. Enjoy your hobbies. Enjoy a decent car. Enjoy your occupation and take pride in what you do. Save and invest your money.

Hi Rich, crazy to see California in grade A ! If a similar NPO map exists for Europe, let us know please. I'm French living in France, 50/50 custody is very common here , this was our choice when divorced in 2021 but then my 2 children (14-16 yo at that time) did not respect the deal, the mother brainwashed them to keep them 100% of the time and cut almost their communication with me. But I protected 90% of my assets, mainly because I had a lot of wealth prior to marriage (I'm top 1%) + my wife was Japanese. I think our life would have been much better for the 4 of us if we had not get married. I wish I was "unplugged" at that time 20 years ago.

Not to get married is part of the solution. At least in Germany, were I live. You don't have to fight over assets, because everything is and stays separated througout the partnership. You don't have to pay alomony to your (ex) partner. You still have to pay for child support. But that's fair because these are your children.

My ex did the same thing with the real estate. Don’t commingle anything. Accounts. Real estate. Assets. Complete enduring separation. Also, do not let your “well meaning” spouse be involved in any of the operations of your outside assets, or they will have a claim to them even if they were acquired before the marriage. Do not be guilted into accepting her “help.” It’s all to have access to your assets you sacrificed and acquired before marriage. I learned this the hard way even in a “conservative red state.” Rich is right. Spend the money, get the advice, that $500 or $1,000 will save your hundreds of thousands of dollars, not to mention avoidance of immense pain, suffering, and set backs.

People trash talk China, but they at least have no family law there, so its 100% up to the couple to figure out this stuff by themselves. Even inheritance is settled by word or decree on paper, but the gov't does nothing to get involved in these personal familial matters. I presume its because they can't take the time to manage the personal affairs of 1.5 billion people, but anyhow, its been really cool to experience, as a passport bro married for a decade to a Chinese woman, the Chinese way and freedom to do as you will in a marriage without any worries around authoritarian government intruding its own feelings upon your personal life.

In California alimony will be paid to the lesser earning spouse until they remarry, but only if the marriage was over 10 years. If marriage was less than 10 years the alimony will be paid for half the duration of the marriage even the person receiving alimony doesn’t remarry.

Get a lawyer involved beforehand and try to come up with a legal binding document that states shared custody with no child support unless you pre arrange specific scenarios and situations where it would be warranted such as incarceration, criminal activity etc

The equivalent strategy to the soccer player Achraf Hakimi in the US is for a man to form an irrevocable trust (consult a good lawyer who specializes in wills and trusts) "for the benefit of" the man and transfer as much of his wealth and property (including a house or other real estate that is in his name but not the woman's name) into the trust. That way, in the case of the divorce, the man has no assets in the eyes of the law for the woman to receive. Family courts do not have the standing to break a well crafted trust (can't emphasize enough the importance of a trusts lawyer with a proven track record).
