Fuck me... I was hopin' to learn how NOT to do this! ... Rotate engine clockwise. Edit: Did you use the special timing chain tensioner? Hate to have ya do it a fourth time...

I did yes, all of the timing tools were used. my timing kit came with a tensioner tool, although I cant seem to find any that come with them anymore.

I feel your pain. After replacing a head gasket on my 328i I put EVERYTHING back together. Including valve covers, cooling system, belts, ignition, everything. Started the car, ran fine. Went for a quick test drive and the check engine light came on. I had put the VANOS on incorrectly. I had to take it all the way back down to the timing chain and start over. It was your video on installing the VANOS gears from scratch that saved me. Nobody else explained it like that. So yeah, could be worse.

$600 for an oil pan holy shit! I got a used one off eBay for $80 shipping included because I THOUGHT mine was cracked then I found out the filler tube o ring ($1) was my problem LMAO

M3NACE its not the most cleanest and prettiest one but its pretty oily haha. I was going to say just pay for shipping but you can find a better one for cheaper on ebay actually.

For setting the timing without a flywheel on did you just line up the tdc mark on the timing case and then lock the cams in the correct place?

yeah basically, get it on there perfect. I would also pull out the spark plugs to prevent building compression, which sometimes can cause the rotating assembly to spin.

Ok my car has a light weight flywheel and it has no hole for the flywheel lock pin. When I put the cam locks on the tdc mark was off about an inch so maybe the car was slightly off of timing but i had not CEL for timing issue, wasnt sure if i should line it up how it was or set it to tdc then lock cams and time it that way.

just line it up absolutely as best as you can. I would try to see if you can put the flywheel lock pin in, even most aftermarket flywheels have them, as the flywheel only bolts on 1 way because it has a dowel pin. i would wiggle the crank back and fourth and try to get the lock pin in. if it doesnt go in, just line it up as best as you can and start working on the cams.

so in parts this rebuild costed like 2 grand? for a shop to do it would be like 5k. you guys have come so far in almost finishing that motor. howcome you guys dont get a used oil pan and clean it

i think in total the build came out around $1500. have been to 2 scrapyards looking for a pan, but everyone wants an E34 M50 oil pan so every car that has one is stripped. they are candy for E30 guys, so I cant ever find them.
