So start at the note right before the shift and practice slowly and carefully going back and forth between that note and the shift and focus on how it feels to play it correctly 10x no intonation errors. That's the part you left out before the loop restarts.

Use your eyes and ears to locate where the shift is (this is called fingerboard geography). Once you know where it is on he fingerboard. Close your eyes and use your ears only, checking with open strings as able, to increase your ear training.

I wish there was a easy way to learn intonation. It's so darn difficult if you have no musical background. You can't even tell if you are doing it right or wrong on a violin. Guitar at least have frets one can rely on.

@@NareshUgaonkar I just started learning the violin and I purchase a violin guide sticker that's now on my fingerboard with all the note locations labeled on the strings.

Agree. This is such a bad habit of mine. I’ve gotten better at recognizing that I’m doing this. Muscle memory is a powerful thing!

Yes just pracicing scales with attention is beneficial. Heifetz's advice.-- Practice the 3rds 4th 6th Octaves first before regular scale and arpeggios.

"Practice 3rds first. And always determine to make it right at the first time, not at the second time "- "First do mental study with music before the actual practice with the instrument. And look at the music before go to bed" -J. Heifetz. A great wisdom.

I was taught to synchronize my muscle memory to what my ear was expecting to hear (the correct pitch). My teacher used to make me take my hand away and rest a few seconds when I missed a shift on a scale, then return to the note before the shift, and try again. He wanted me to hear the correct pitch in my head first, before placing my hand in the more familiar position. Once I had mastered the *interval*, I would repeat the process with any combination of fingers to understand the "geography" of the fingerboard. The whole lesson would be two notes over and over in different combinations of fingers. I think these lessons did wonders for tying the muscle memory to the ear. It also made my much more familiar with the subtleties of my instrument. I think this is what a lot of teachers fail to impart.

Thank you very much. I don’t play the violin but I play the piano and this could definitely be applied also to the piano. I never thought of it this way before. Wonderful.

When I practice scales and arpeggios, I always practice it, and after I get it 8 times perfectly, that's when I either speed it up a little faster, OR, I like to add different elements to the scale or arpeggio.

Practicing correction VS practicing eliminating errors ❤

I teach Japanese with the same philosophy; "let's eliminate errors", (mind you English is not my mother tongue) however most language teachers and students swear by "everybody learns in a different way" or "it is ok to make errors". Kudos

Great advice, I think this applies to any instrument really. At least that's how I was taught in my piano studies, better slow and accurate, no matter how slow, than faster, wrong aand corrected afterwards. And with repetition the correct way will become automatic and can be then played faster.

I practice Arabic maqams (equivalent to scales or moods in western music) on a fretless instrument (Arabic oud) by playing without looking to the fingerboard and searching for some precise spots in order to play a half flat (quarter ton) by 👂 Typically classical conditioning experiment on my self. When I "hear and feel" the ugly note I play it louder to "perceive it" as a wrong tone. It really hurts when I press the wrong spot... almost painful to the ear and soul. I "punish" myself with that ugly sound and get the conclusion that: next time try to use your fingers well enough to make the right moves and get the exact spot on the fingerboard (without looking at it) and the reward will be a great feeling of balance and harmony.
