Hey guys, if you enjoy these videos and would like to help me in creating them then please consider supporting me on Patreon. The link is in the description. I can imagine a few of you might have an issue with the fact I am using Patreon (as right now the site is in the middle of a controversy for banning a creator because he said the n word). But, the truth is, Patreon is still the best place for you to support me and for me to communicate with you and the rest of my supporters. However, as a lot of you have asked for an alternate means of support there is a Paypal donation link in the description as well. KZbin has added channel memberships that’s true. However, KZbin takes a 30% cut of all the money you support me with, while Patreon only takes a 5% cut. That difference is colossal, and I don’t see myself ever enabling channel memberships because of it. What more, on Patreon you can pledge specific amounts while on KZbin that amount is fixed. I want to reward you with various things at various price levels and KZbin does not have the ability to do that. Let’s also not forget that I don’t want to have all my eggs in one basket. If my channel gets terminated for any reason; then so does my entire platform for you to support me. But Patreon is 3rd party, which means if I get banned from KZbin (because of article 13), then my Patreon page will still exist. So if you want to join my discord, get 5 day early access and get consultation sessions from me then please support me on Patreon. The link is in the description :) All the best, - Henry

Not only that, but Terminator had a compelling romance that was essential to the larger plot. Of those three films Predator is clearly the more action oriented one. For example, the unnecessarily long and gratuitous shoot 'em up western style battle with the guerrillas and their Russian overlords before they encountered the Predator (a minor weak point of the film, in my opinion). Alien was much more about mood in a cold futuristic setting. Terminator had a strong science fiction component. Reboots and remakes churned out by lesser mortals seem completely oblivious to these elements that made the originals so strong.

The thing is i'm pretty sure the predator chose to attack during the day, because at night they were all vulnerable. Look at that time he snuck into their camp, stole the guys dead body and ran away. In that moment he could have killed them all, but he chose not to. I think he did it because there is no sport in killing them while their defences are down, he wants to attack them in the day when they are at their most capable. Now that's badass.

@@TheCloserLook Predator are hunter species, they do not hunt THE "weak", like sparing the harmless woman if she's not a threat(wouldn't be a first time we saw that). They're the thropy type of race, the more dangerous and stronger the foe, the more scars and greater battle it gave the more honor and respect they will get(taking human spines in 2nd movie, and other monster skeletons we saw during the film in the ship decorated on altar shows the hunter/predator skills in the hunt). We know, that predator wants a fight, a hunt and not some silly assassinations lol. 2018 was really meh tbh.. I think the reason SciFi can be combined with any genre is because SciFi is a classification of the work's setting, while the other genres (action, horror, or romance) are classifying the plot. Trying to combine two setting genres (like SciFi and Medieval) has just as much potential for clash as trying to combine two plot genres.

If your solution for making a scene scary is by “making it dark,” you’re not doing it right. You need to set up an atmosphere with a payoff. The original Predator had Dutch’s crew in the jungle, knowing they were watched, and the payoff is the dread they feel and the suspended state of unease in the situation. There were no jump scares in the original predator, rather set up atmospheres and calculated emotions conveyed to viewers. If your atmosphere happens to be dark, that’s fine, but don’t act like it’s a causation of fear. You have to earn fear.

I'd like to suggest that another reason the original _Predator_ movie wouldn't work today is that the genre of film _Predator_ was riffing on (with flipping power dynamics and horror elements and whatnot) no longer exists. Oh, we still have action movies, but not the same _kinds_ of action movies. Modern action heroes are more likely to be secret agents than soldiers; their plot armor usually takes the form of walking off the occasional serious injury rather than just not getting hurt; and they are less likely to use overwhelming automatic fire instead of highly-choreographed short-range action maneuvers. You'd need a different setting, a different plot, and a different monster (or at least a different set of alien gadgets) to flip the modern action genre into a horror film than you did in the 80's. And I am _not_ the guy to do that flipping; I don't like most action films. There are some standouts, but I don't feel like I have a good feel of the genre's pulse. But even I can see that _Red_ and, um, _The King's Men_ aren't the same as _Rambo_ and _The Expendables._

It's the same reason the re-released Duke Nukem didn't work. Both original works lampooned current action tropes to achieve what they were going for. In the case of Predator it took those action heroes and made them vulnerable, for Duke Nukem it was holding up a mirror to their ridiculous machismo. You can't flip, lampoon or mirror something that hasn't existed in that form for 30 years. It ends up disconnected from its point of reference and satire gets mistaken for sincerity, which in Duke's case was a crass, gun-toting idiot spouting nonsense.

Predator (2018) gets wrong what Predator 2, written by the original writers, got right but didn't quite do perfectly. The Predator is a slasher franchise, not an action flick. And if you're going to make it an action flick, better to do like Aliens and subvert it by tearing apart the action cliches early and then going back to an action flick. Shane Black made a movie where he couldn't lose his main characters until the third act, so all of the fights were toothless and safe. No one was under a threat except nameless side characters, and no one took the threats seriously. For a movie of this length, adding MORE conflict means you have to make each conflict less relevant. The first Predator has only a 5 minute action sequence and a lot of the deaths happen off-screen for the rest of the film. It's paced and written like an action movie that stumbles into a horror movie 15 minutes in and stays there. Predator is an ensemble action flick that stays an ensemble action flick the whole film and never subverts itself or comments on itself, instead falling into cliches.

I agree with what you're saying, but I do think scifi is both an aesthetic and a genre, though I do think it is increasingly used as an aesthetic and not a genre. Old school scifi was about exploring some common ideas, like how technology will shape our culture, and how it affects society. Books like Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, and others all explore these ideas to talk about where we're going. Movies like Star Wars are not that. Aesthetically, they're scifi, but thematically, they're fantasy adventures, with the same structure, themes, and sensibilities.

It wasn't too bad in my opinion. But it felt a little like most sequels out there where it was just in the original's shadow rather than really adding to the series and bringing something truly new to the table. I'd say terminator 2 is a far better example of a good sequel than predator 2.

sometimes you've just gotta shrug your shoulders and decide the odds of a sequel being amazing and original vs it being bad are leaning towards it being bad. So like yeah it wasnt too bad for a sequel, but for a fucking movie about *insert plot of predator 2*! Its pretty amazing considering how fucking awful it could've been. just saying, hollywood has fucking ruined some amazing movies with sequels

I gotta a *reboot* *of* *predator* on my mind: Russia, 1945 - World War II. The germans try to survive to the hard terms of the country. Some germans die frozen, some others die in combat, until they are only 9 soldiers (the protagonist would be like, for instance, Viggo Mortensen :D). Mean while, appears a Predator which haunt them camouflaging in the snow. And now, the soldiers will have to face the Predator in the middle of blizzards and snowfalls while they run out of supplies...

The reason so many die hard predator fans had a problem with this film was the constant shitting on the lore of the universe for example a predator is not to evolve their bodies but their tactics, you must not harm the offspring. It breaks them so casually as well that's why I think it would've been best if one of the predators was labeled a bad blood, or one that was dishonorable to the overall view of the clan. Then you can say he modified his body and attempts to kill the kid all you want, because he isn't a honorable predator he's bad blood which is essentially a pile of shit to the more honorable ones. And have the entire movie based around the more honorable predator hunting down the bad blood for a nice trophy, and some honor points. Also to the more general populace that ain't so die hard you labeled the issues very well about the cinema choices

I'll just say "Dude, THAT is a much better movie concept than the crapfest that we had here". There are several ideas that I've read online that were 10 times better than what the writer(s) came up with. I really disliked Predator. Almost to the point where I feel the franchise has officially been killed...again. Guess we gotta wait almost another decade to see this species return hopefully with a better director, writer behind it.

They should have just made the movie about The Predator originally coming to hunt but ends up teaming with the Humans because the Super Predator doesn't go by a code. It just murders defenseless women and children with no remorse or honor.
@dinokaiser
@dinokaiser 5 жыл бұрын
@@SuperMurray2009 Again at no point does it even harm any children and the one women killed is killed more due to the people shooting at him than anything else (he used her as a shield, which is still a war crime but it's not like the predators were ever above using people to defend themselves). The super predator does very little differently aside from his approach (which is notably less stealthy than the ordinary non-bulletproof predator).

To be fair, your point about the opening scene in the original barely showing the Predator and how it adds to the mystery and suspense cannot be applied to the 4th movie of a franchise since by now, we know what it is, we know what it can do, and we know what it looks like. Still a terrible movie but I think you also neglected the fact that it was a product of the studio demanding reshoots and an overall runtime of around 90 minutes. That said, your point about the humor is completely on point. The humor in the original was a product of character development and background sharing whereas, in the 2018 version, it was played for laughs that 90% of them missed.

Yeah for those of us that have seen the predator films up to this point know what a predator is but the reboot was for people who haven’t seen the previous films. I For a movie monster like the Predator you want to make sure that this monster is scary as fuck and is a deadly tactical silent killer, not a hulking beast that’s overpowered and attacks in the open. The same thing for the Xenomorphs in the Alien movies. Both of these creatures are deadly and are scary in their own ways so you want the new audience to know exactly how deadly and scary they are.
@Seb94Argent
@Seb94Argent 5 жыл бұрын
In the original Predator, Shane Black was brought on to write in some jokes for the film, which he declined because he knew the film's tone didn't have room for jokes, the studio went as far as offering him an acting role in it which he took (hence why he's in the film) but he still refused to write them any comedy (akin to Lethal Weapon) so they killed his character off first. I'm not sure what's happened since but if I had to guess I'd say he approached the writing for The Predator with comedy in mind and realised he had to add horror but couldn't deliver on it, and this is what we got. The jokes in the original Predator should never have been there, they were the result of studio interference trying to shoehorn in comedy where it didn't belong, and Black points this out on the special features of The Predator DVD

You what know what I think fundamentally killed THE Predator reboot? The Marvel Cinematic Universe. Much like what happened to the Disney-owned Star Wars, some execs must’ve thought the best way to profit would be to utilize the MCU formula- lots of comedy and a set up for an expanded universe. At no point could I take the new movie serious, because it was littered with constant comedy, and this issue was compounded by how at ease the characters were. As for expanding the universe, they chose to lazily link the original film with a generic reason, introduce a new predator that is nothing more than a bigger predator, and that end scene... That last scene was something you’d totally expect in the typical Marvel film. I could talk about how poorly executed the reboot is for hours, but I think the MCU comparison is a very simple means for describing what happened to THE Predator, and what we can expect for any action film today.

The same with the Bird Box which has all hype around is. They explain the whole plot through dialogue in the first 15 minutes; lazy writing. And also too many plot holes. That is not what happened to star wars. Star Wars in no way tried to be like Marvel. What happened was the writers tried to do something new and it pissed off star wars fans (people who hate star wars to begin with). Almost everyone who actually went to see Solo and wasn't a youtuber trying to not get shredded by fanboy hatemail loved the movie. But fans boycotted and Disney released too early, so the movie did not attract the crowd it deserved. The last Jedi was one of the best movies I've ever seen. Up there with reservoir dogs and The Dark Knight. Any problem that ive seen with the movie, people quite frankly should've had a problem with over 30 years ago when the original trilogy came out lol
