My advice: 1.Go into the gallery 2.choose a piece of work 3. Stare, long and hard (that’s what she said) 4. After staring shout, Aha!! (Make sure you look around as if you’ve discovered sliced bread. 5. Slowly clap and exclaim, Magnifico!!! 6. Walk out

A couple ventured into my booth at my last art festival, admired my work and asked the inevitable, "how long have you been been doing this?" I like to answer that I'd been drawing since a child copying Archie comic books, took as much art in school as I could, then got married, had 2 kids and a muggle career for 30+ years. The man did one of those involuntary snorting laughs and wagged his finger saying he was gonna steal that. So fun when they get it!

Hi. I stopped listening to reviews a long time ago. They began cursing at me calling me all types of names. I had to close the account, and reupload my work all over again. Now those people don't bother me anymore. Anything else they want to say it's not going to mean a thing, because it doesn't stop other people from engaging with my work. I learned a great lesson. Stop reading reviews. Keep creating work, and have a great time. You are the artist, not them.

Helpful and hysterical! Love it! I love the helpful jargon, reminds me of Vogon poetry... "underlying metaphor.... " (Hitch Hikers Galaxy reference). Or the most elegant web design rule: Kiss 'keep it simple stupid'. My husband said he was going to barf the next time he heard someone say, 'that color just makes it pop'. If you watch home fix it up kind of shows there is a top ten list of descriptions. Works for Art too. "it is warm and inviting', 'the design is open', 'I love the light', 'I love the color', 'The color palette is ____', ... not going to list all 10, that would be boring. Or to make it interesting, create 'false' crisis like they do in the shows. Drama sells even for shy persons. LOL. Yep, like you said just be yourself, practice if you have to...

@@Rafiwashere Lately I have been watching 'Sky Artist of the Year', there are shows under the Sky Network (British Channel). A KZbin channel called "Art Lover" keeps posting the episodes of the show. Loads of inspiration and 'commentary' that is sure to please the untrained ears and skeptic. Great show and it doesn't 'pit' the contestants against each other like a lot of American shows. No Jerry Springer artist fighting and back stabbing or wrestling brush manuvers. There are 2 contests each year: landscape and portrait. What I have learned is that the more 'realistic' the painting the least likely the artist will win. They are looking for 'different' styles and watching the artists is really inspiring. And keep a notebook for the judges comments. LOL. You should enter Rafi. I love the self portraits of you and the ones you do of Klee. 10,000 pound commission for the winner.

Another few tips for shy people is remember that if your attending a show, people focus more on looking at the art. Also if you are the artist, remember you have control of the conversation. Most people (Not art critics) get a little star struck, even if you're not famous or anything, so when they talk to you they are probably more nervous than you. And if you still feel nervous just find something to do to be "Busy" so you can politely refuse to talk, like eat appetizers, or head to the bathroom, or have a friend bring along a camera to take photos of you around the venue, these were things I did at one of my collage art showings and it helped me not be a nervous wreck and also made me seem more "professional". Lol

I actually take a fair deal of pride in some of the STUPIDEST crap to fly out of my mouth... It's liberating to find a modest crowd of people raising the tension with their expectations of some expertise (consider in a show at MY booth... for instance) only to let the disappointment come crashing home as something remarkably silly or self deprecating blasts out of my mouth at above normal speaking volume. "Yep, painted this with a rubber spatula and a paint roller wrapped in rope... until there was enough to get an image in my head..." "That!?! er... oh... well... I'll give YOU a dollar to take that f***in' thing." "I just decided to make a mountain out of a garbage pile that day... seemed like a good idea at the time." "Sometimes I just bash my head into the wall repeatedly, waiting for an idea to pop in there. It doesn't usually work, but it feels SOOOOooo good when I quit!" AND myriad other remarks have been known to make regular contributions to an otherwise overtly pretentious atmosphere, or to destroy the silence. I'm not picky. ;o)

This was great! You 2 had me laughing so hard. Here on the North Coast of California there is a pretty good group of arty folks. Everyone seems to just have fun with it all. In the spring and in the fall there is a studio open house here in Sonoma County where people drive around and go to the different artists' studios to see their art and buy if you want to. It's a great way for the artists to get their art shown without leaving home or setting up in a group studio and I've met lots of very cool people - the artists and the ones looking. I'm a bit shy, but I do have fun chatting with people once I start relaxing and enjoying the art. I don't recall meeting any hoity-toity nose in the air type people here. I just make comments about the art pieces I like - "That's a cool piece" or " I love the colors in this one". I think Mendocino County is the same. Thanks for your fun videos!

I lack the confidence to go out there. The main reason is English is my second language and there are times I struggle to get my point across, so the only way I would go is with my husband which is not possible as we are full time carers for my mother in law who has dementia. I know I need to snap out of it and just do it, I haven’t sold any of my art due to fear factors. Not all is lost as there is a Sunday market close by and I bit the bullet and I will be setting up a table every Sunday. Time to get my stuff organised for next weekend 🙂

Whew...lol. I didn’t realize these were a response to my question. Staying in the feeling zone is the best thing. I guess too that I prefer “talking shop” with other people in the art struggle and feel like most discussions with non-artists will be in the small talk arena or someone trying to haggle me into selling a piece of art for offensive price and I really don’t want to be the artist that clobbered a prospective customer. What do you generally do when someone says “Can I get a better price?”
@gnarthdarkanen74645 жыл бұрын
In any project, I consider my time at an average of around $10/hour. Then calculate the material costs approximately (you want to be at least within 10% of accurate, though)... and that gives me "cost"... SO for a "price" quoted to a customer, I double it... That's where I start a "basic" asking price. The "basic" asking price is for just about anything I deal, with or without any real effort involved. Things like replacing a lamp-cord and just flipping the lamp fall into this category, even if the lamp came from a dumpster, I consider a "lamp's worth" of value as if I bought it at WalMart... for "market value" of the material. Customers DO NOT NEED TO KNOW THIS! ...For anything I consider "questionable"... I can default to this "asking price method" at least until I get a better idea what I actually WANT for the thing. For stuff that I'm particularly proud of, I often default to more like 250% of "cost" (figured the same way) or even 300% (just triple it)... and go on with my day. I put prices on tags, too. It's less hassle to remember what things cost when I know just at a glance and some "backward math". If I'm proud of a piece this week, I'll be just as proud of it in a year or a decade... so I just "know" my math. That is generally easy to keep consistent, but if you struggle with the pride thing... It comes with practice. SO... Now that we have the "asking price" I KNOW how much "room" I have to cover the things like rental space, fuel, food, etc... consumables around shows and shops so I can let customers "get a deal" through their demonstrable skills at haggling. AND I DO mean "Skills". There are ways to politely express or suggest a deal in the haggling process without showing yourself up as "too cheap to get along with" or "being a jerk" about the prices at art shows. I require customers to do a bit better than "Can I have a better price?" though. That's not how it works... talk shop a while, visit, and try to pretend you have a vested interest in either me, my booth, my genre of display, or something... THEN try a counter offer or even suggest that you know the market a bit. Of course, I can challenge that notion, so a demonstrable skill in estimates around what something costs to make will provide a context, not only for your respect to the craft, but to my workmanship. It can also demonstrate a customer's lack of knowledge or even insult the work... so customers be careful about phrases like, "you just slather it with..." or "a dab here and there..." off hand. A serious counter offer, usually within 20-30% of asking is something I rarely walk away from. If I've JUST setup or arrived for morning, I do have the whole day ahead, so that weighs on considerations. At the same time, customers CAN understand that after most of a day broiling in sun or non-climate controlled buildings and dealing with the usual traffic of ass-hats and characters, I'm probably a bit softened up for the picking... and a cash offer at even 35% or so below "asking" is feasible. It's worth pointing out here, that I've been intimately involved and relatively active in open air markets of all manners for more than a decade. To my knowledge, and practically speaking, just about anyone with experience in flexible pricing environments practices a pricing system like this. It's why you rarely go to a fair-ground or flea market without seeing at least half the booths "priced all to hell" (as we say around these parts). It's because almost NO body pays "full asking price" as opposed to socializing a bit and then making a counter-offer. It's exhausting, dubious, and occasionally mistakes WILL happen. It's part of the charm. I let the mistakes and misquotes go. I screwed up, and a customer got the better of me. I can laugh at it, and motor on. Why??? I don't let it happen often for one. Most of the time, I may not make a fortune, but I do well enough to "beat break-even" and all things considered, that's enough to continue doing this. For another (finally?) I let it go, because it ATTRACTS attention to being deliberate. "A deal's a deal." is one phrase that brings customers back, even if it's because they have that hope of "beating you out" again... don't let it happen too often, but sticking by a price BY FAR outweighs trying to redact it later. ;o)

During a critique we were all supposed to dress and speak as if we were having a showing at a gallery and the other students were our competition. So, that was fun. Watching the ones who had a lot of money stride through the doors, seeing those of us who hit the salvation army 2 towns over for our "professional attire" ....the couple who came in together in painted body siuts..... the one who came in the duct tape covered suit. We all knew each other, we all knew the teachers, it was fine... until all the Deans, and administrators showed up and started asking questions and we all had to pretend like we knew wth we were doing or saying with our art. I'll be completely honest and say right up front that duct tape suit dude had never appealed to me on a personal level and his art only ever hit the back of my eyes, it never got to my mind, heart , or nose. It didn't even stink- It was just meh to me. Others thought his work was amazing including 2 profs who wheeled the Deans etc straight to their favorite students while the rest of us stood by our works like the world's worst game show models, " Right this way! Please view my homage to "local fair goldfish that die after 1 day". and my sculptural interpretation of "midterms, caffeine and the illusion of a college degree." Basically, we let the profs run the scary people around, they asked a few questions or made one word comments and moved along to the next fainting goat. No, I was not brave, I fared no better than anyone else and my confidence in my swanky clothes (17.67$ with tax) was running like the sweat down my back. But the students who had been coached by profs and prepared to meet the scary people did reasonably well. I was recognized by the Dean of Students as I had lit a project on fire in the quad and there were threats of arrest a few weeks before, but he was only looking for free wine and the profs were not happy that the Dean made mention of my flaming art. In fact they brought over duct tape suit dude to critique my work. Aside from throwing a bunch of jargon and shade, he had nothing to say and the prof let it stand like a flag in the body of a curious native and set off on the next target. It sucked tremendously, I'll never forgive the prof, and duct tape suit dude can go eat every single pile of dog $#%! indefinitely. It's damn hard to know how to define art, how to respond, or how to discuss it with others. Just don't be a dick about it. If a piece really bothers you, figure out why and move on. Ridicule helps no one, blustering bull just makes art as a whole , and artist, look like beggars to society'smostand- poor laughable children that we are trying to do anything to make it onto the refrigerator door of approval. I agree, if you hear that critic talk and jargon, just run.

Je ne sais quoi would not at all be impressive since I live in Quebec, where French is one of the official languages. XD

I HAVE A QUESTION! Have you ever experienced a GALLERY stealing you work? I have 7 pieces displayed in a local gallery, some of them have sold, they're being released to the buyers and the gallery is basically refusing to pay me for the my art that they're selling. It's become some weird "American Greed" scenario where I and some other artists are pulling up next week and pulling our remaining work without letting the owner know we're coming so we won't be denied access to our artwork................................................ it's like a nightmare

@@Rafiwashere basically we all converged, and through some pressure from all of us contacting her at once, she paid me out of her personal funds and she's paying the others on Friday? Also out of her personal account, she evidently used the money from our actual sales for other reasons and got behind trying to cover it up, it's still a sketchy situation, but I have an agreement to keep my art up until the 19th, I'm just driving over there a couple times a week to check on my work, as are the other artists. Probably won't be showing my work there again.

Play the game even if it doesn't make sense. 🤣 Like if we can remember those brain crashing wordy junks. Nope. So realism works from me, this is a nose, love the expression in the eyes. Boom here is the perfect comment 😂. I am shy can't even introduce myself in a crowd

My college professor used to always tell us "Don't prostitute your work! Making art for money is prostitution!" Lol!!!
@ReviewsAndMore95 жыл бұрын
OVR30QT 3.14 mine said it was “kitch” and she hated kitch. Hope I spelled that right. But then she taught art and wasn’t doing art so I took it to mean she failed to sell her art and hated those who were successful in selling theirs as a result. Snobbish. Sour grapes.

But I am an overflufferous boister-monger! I have to overfluff!!! And if someone said to me, "THAT'S not how you talk about art!" I would say, "Um, yeah, it IS how *I* talk about art! Begone foul fiend!"

From now on, instead of telling people gracias (thank you) in Spanish I'm going to say, "Grassy ass". Just to see if they catch it. Who knows, they may not! 😂

I find most artist’s statements very pretentious and trying to sound like they are on a different level from other artist’s because they use big words. Just speak like a normal human being. Blech!
