@@starsneptunexx Bro, I'm Samoan and i get that's what a lot of Samoans look like but it's like... Lowkey a little bit of an exaggeration (I'm stick thin and so is my brother). Also i'm convinced they weren't making this movie with any kind of "appreciation" for the culture in mind- Just using Polynesia as a new background instead of an opportunity to create fresh diverse takes and new kinds of stories. Why is the storm god (who lowkey puts up with a LOT) a bad guy when one of the protags is unironically the biggest jerk ever in mythology?? It's because one of them is more marketable and as an easier name for children (and mainlanders) to pronounce. They can't help but make designs more whitewashed and palletable in order to sell merchandise... and lord forbid using actual monsters as villains- that way they wouldn't defame demigods and incorrectly portray entities as evil and have a chance to introduce insane monsters from a mythology... No, that's too bold, creative and doesn't follow the Disney Formula of defacing cultures and "rewriting" them for the public eye because it's digestable that way. It's the worst when it's a culture with the lowest population proportional to other "races" and there's so little information available about our mythology that you'll find thousands of results for Disney's "Maui" before ANYTHING about the original mythology.

It's more palletable for mainlanders. Imagine if real monsters from polynesian mythology were the villains instead of defacing entities from a culture so small that when you look up "Maui" it's actually HARD to find the original mythology. Of course, that doesn't involve the Disney Formula of not having anybody involved in the culture take a second look at the script and storyboards and just doing whatever seems to be the most profitable, even if it involves completely rewriting it without disclaimers (that their chosen story that isn't the actual portrayal) and patting themselves on the back for presenting a deformed version of polynesian culture to their impressionable audience more massive than the entire population of polynesia combined. It's only aiding in the erasure of our mythology.

I’m not expecting every villain to be layered and having “relatable” motives but a poorly made villain is a poorly made villain. Tomatoa was a power hungry crustacean but he was still great because he was an actual character and had personality and clear motives. We literally have no reason to take Nalo seriously. It feels like they were trying to write Zeus or Poseidon into Polynesian folklore. Of course, they missed the mark of what makes a temperamental godlike entity who can create storms to invoke fear in humans actually scary. Epic the Musical actually managed to do with Poseidon what this movie fails to do with Nalo. There was no need for a fake villain because they could have easily reflected the dynamic of Moana and Maui in the dynamic of Nalo and Matangi, and had them revealed at the same time instead of trying to hide one for the sake of a "Plot twist".

Even just in the footage in this video you can see their expressions and movements are more stiff and their hair doesn’t have anywhere near the same detail. It's super ironic how the protagonist is arguably the biggest jerk ever in polynesian mythology. He's known for stealing (as seen in the first movie), but also known for deception and straight up just exploiting his powers, with his death being... deserved. If they were to make anyone an interesting (or canon and accurate) villain, it would've been him- and I wish his neutral moral alignment as a hero was played on more instead of just chalking it up to a sense of pride that gets resolved extremely quickly before he becomes 100% a good guy. Imagine if he was true to his character and the two protagonists had to overcome their differences, with Moana also sporting some flaws besides being quirky (maybe he's insanely jealous of her healthy relationship to her family considering his abandonment and Moana visibly resents him for putting hers in danger). - Both change for the better in a scene where Moana gains sympathy for him after seeing his tattoos (which is a wasted *insanely* good symbolic depiction of trauma never completely going away!), and Maui understands WHY he was wrong to steal the heart other than the immediate consequence of everything decaying. - Bonus: In the movie, the heart creates life- he could've stole it to try to create an illusion of family for himself. He understands the destruction he causes and willingly wants to return it now. (In the movie it was never completely fleshed-out very well why he suddenly had a change of heart.) - Cute wrap-up addition to the end- Moana's home village "accepts" Maui and we see characters at the end interact with him like family- Slapping him on the back while he helps ready the boats (very common casual greeting in polynesia), including him at the table for a meal, maybe even attending Moana's ceremony- he finally found his "family" and community and the scars he carries get lighter (and justifies his change of arrogance) while still maintaining his fun personality and dynamic with Moana (who is also taking on a big role of responsibility and will also change). LOTS of potential for fun interactions even after both characters develop. - Now the characters go through an an arc instead of having 0 conflict until the story demands it and then insisting it's resolved by the end. Wait, that's too complex for children under 5 to "understand", involves actual chemistry between characters, doesn't completely deface the mythology and would involve making unique characters for once..Nevermind.

1. I love that so many people inherently associate Tamatoa with Schaffrillas. Mainly cause I'm glad I'm not the only one lol 2. Once you realise that Moana 2, and its very likely planned sequel, began their existence as a Disney+ show, a LOT of the problems with the movie make total sense. I guarantee you that Nalo barely being in the movie despite his role as the main antagonist was intended as a cliffhanger for a theoretical season 2 and they just left it in as is when they turned it into a movie.

I think Nalo failed to establish itself as a Villain because it is a FORCED villain. Maleficent, Scar, Gaston, Jafar and many other iconic Disney villains has VILLAIN SONGS. Matangi had her own song. Other villains has a clear motives, but they're hatred of the main character as a whole. Nalo has that same hatred, but He lacks proper motive to even fight Moana. Yeah, He killed her, but as a form of defense for his curse. Not as Maleficent purposely killing Aurora, or Ursula wishing to harm Ariel. Last is each villain has Boss fights. Nalo is, Fortunately has a very good boss fight. However, I think He needs introduction, villain song, a CLEAR motive and purpose in this film. I'm glad the third film is more centric on Moana's revenge. Making Nalo's motive clearer.

4:22 4:26 Bro. The uter masterpiece I had just witnessed will forever change how I see the world around me. It's the gift of compensation. A show true care for wanting to make up for an inconvenience. It's a great tell of love this man has to give. Thank you for the gift of love!

I really enjoyed your video about Nalo, I was so excited to see what Nalo is going to be but after learning that he doesn’t have screen time and it made me disappointed, and I decided that I want to retell Moana 2 and make Nalo a very terrifying villain since he’s a storm god

We honestly need a tamatoa series

At least they’re actually doing villains instead of that era of seemingly constant twist villains.
@deathseekr1537Ай бұрын
Honestly, shouldve been a show, multipel hours with bat lady until the last episode with the lightning guy to set up up for moana 2 would be decent
@Shirebaggins.Ай бұрын
Disney wants to milk this cow until it has no more milk, that's why Nalu wasn't a villain in this film, now they have the excuse of using him for a third film which is more than inevitable.

(i watched moana 1 right before going to the cinema for the sequel btw) i loved Moana 2. i think it's only a little worse than the first one. but i didn't expect a sequel to something as perfect as Moana 1 tbh. i think the villans were one of the worse points of this movie (especially bat lady) but still not that bad for me. i'll edit this after i finish this video to say if i agree with it or no. Edit: i agree the bat lady was really fucking useless and fight with "Zeus" could be better. i think Maui is a bit underpowered and should defeat the bat lady. fortunately i missed the post credits scene in my first watch. sadly i checked it and it fucking sucks ass. this scene on it's own knocked this movie from 8/10 to a 6 or 7/10. yea it has more flaws than i originally seen. but i still like it. ngl Moana 2 still left me positively suprised. i walked in there expecting another rise of skywalker so my expectations weren't high. good video tho. (idk why ppl are complaining bout the songs i loved almost all of them)

This is a month late but funfact this was meant to be a animated series! In fact the animations were ALMOST FINISHED and CLOSE TO RELEASING SAID SERIES before Disney was like "Nnnaahhhh do it all over again but make it a MOVIE this time!" So as you can imagine the people working on the Moana series were forced to crush down all of their work into a movie where they have way less room to expand on all of the plot points and characters they made for it.

It's important to know that this initially was going to be the show. They just did a frankensteins monster to it to make it work as a movie. The end credits scene would have worked better if it were a show.

But how will you defend the final battle of Moana 1 when the ocean could've weakened Te-Ka at every single opportunity? I mean... really. If the ocean wanted Te-Fiti's heart back on Te-Fiti, why didn't it just deliver the heart itself? Really all your complaints at Nalo could be pointed at Te-ka as well. The fight only happens when the story needs it to. I'm not defending Nalo or anything, but your criticism feels inconsistent. And if I WILL give some credit to Nalo, the story has explained he hates humans more than demigods. The humans distracted Nalo while Maui attempted to lift Motufetu.

“How is it that this movie sits at an 88% right now?!” Because not everyone is a chronically online adult fixated on every time Disney publishes a below average movie and most people just want to take there two year old somewhere for a couple hours.

If they want to just take their two year old to the movies; let them see The Wild Robot. Just a better movie IMO and it's for all audiences.

Bit of a low blow, but it makes sense. I went to see the movie by myself just to kill an hour and a half while I was doing things in downtown. Didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted but at least it was an okay distraction from other things.
