I have two close relatives who were serving senior officers at the time of the '95 coup. One of them was in military intelligence and a personal friend of general Diya, and he always laughed whenever people styled the events as a "phantom coup." There was a coup, period. Truth is that Abacha got an early heads up from Bamayi and decided to let things play out so as to get irrefutable evidence. You need to be more objective.
