Funnily enough…I have been doing ‘bike fit’ for past 10 years…some decent results.Always more to learn…I raced in 1970’s,before ‘bike fit’ was a thing. Heel on centre of the pedal an excellent guide..starting point. I still get folk to do this sometimes after doing a fitting,also helps as a guide for leg length discrepancies.

That was one of the most thorough physical assessments for a bike fit I’ve seen. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

It doesn't surprise me at all that pros don't get bike fits. You just have to look at some positions.
@invisiblescout63353 ай бұрын
yeah, and even when they do get bike fits, a lot will just chang it back cause if feels weird and they won't give it a chence. Pro cyclists are incredibly stubborn and oft stupid. Also looking for a new bike for myself and "race" bikes rarely have proper race geometries

Well. You think a ‘bike fitter’ has a better chance than the pro of getting their position right?

Interesting video Alex: I am intrigued. Around 26 mins in Phil is recommending moving the Wove V8 forward so you are more 'in the saddle' rather than on the nose and over the BB. However everything I have heard from Wove is that you don't sit back on the saddle, but you are tipped forward in the long nose over the BB. Also there is a negative slope to the saddle of 3-6 degrees, and yours looks flat. Is this because you are more in a road position rather than a TT/Tri position? I am intrigued. I'd appreciate your thought on this please.

Excellent video, Alex! Phil is very knowledgeable. As a person with admitted “trust” issues, I wonder if a different Retul bike fitter would suggest another adjustment in some area for you simply to “justify” their expertise and/or the cost of the bike fitting process. Thoughts?
@gregmorrison73203 ай бұрын
Retul has their set of numbers that they set the rider up to, another system will have their set of numbers, who's to say which is correct, I've seen some real crap bike fits where the rider is still having problems, personally I think it's all bullshit.
@danielakerman82412 ай бұрын
5 different bike fitters will give you 5 different bike fits, even if they all use the same tool. Retul helps with visualization and guidelines, but every bike fitter will have a different idea on the correct adjustments and compromises to make for the individual rider. Doesn’t make any of them wrong or right.

Interesting stuff, Alex. How have you set your wattbike up? Does it transfer the position from your road/track bikes?

The bars with the chimney and positive stem look cartoonishly high, I was hoping there would be more talk about that. I'm 184 with long legs and considering buying a Chinese TT bike for lols, my main concern is around stack height and tilt and adjustability of the front end, so seeing a Frankenstein setup like that one scares me :)

I am not a pro....not even close. I am just a 60 year old man who used to race track back as a teen and young adult who still rides a couple times a week. About 20 years ago, I engaged one of those expensive high profile bike fitters. He made minuscule changes to my seat and added 2 cm to my stem. I rode it that way for a couple weeks, and noticed increased strain and fatigue on my back. I changed things back and rode it that way since. About the only change I have made in 40 years is to raise the bar relative to the seat. Each new bike I setup a bit higher.
@oOoACFREEMANoOo3 ай бұрын
You can just tell the mechanic to raise or lower this and that. And if your riding 25 hrs a week you'll figure some stuff out...

I'm curious about your crank choice, if I remember correctly you use 170mm cranks on road and 165mm on tt. Have you tried 165 on the road bike and if so how did you find it compared to 170? I recently made the switch to 170 and feel it's much better in aero position on road bike and I'm considering switching to 165 and probably will try it. I am about same height as you I believe 183 cm and ride with cleats pretty far back. Maybe something you could talk about in a future video.

What did your saddle setback end up at? 85mm to start but you sit way forward and that saddle nose looks really long.
@carlpentney2903 ай бұрын
You're obviously used to riding on the nose of the saddle but for us mere mortals, despite moving the saddle forward, it still looks a massive setback.

I don't understand how the lengthy physical assessment tied into the fit. It might be helpful if you were trying to predict a person's position from scratch, but that wasn't the case here. The other thing I don't get is why not use the Retul bike? You can adjust anything in seconds without getting off the bike, and risking stripping hardware on the customer's bike.

Thanks for sharing. Bike fit James, Neill from down under and a whole host of bike fitters would not call this a proper bike fit. This guy is clearly over relying on technology, he barely looked at Alex when he was riding. Those numbers are references at best. Alex said he felt stretched, and that probably means something is wrong. The majority of people should stay away from this "marketing bike fit".
@AlexDowsettOfficial2 ай бұрын
Disagree, Phil looked aplenty. On the ‘stretched’ aspect, everything is going to feel stretched or different from what you’re used to, doesn’t necessarily mean the initial starting point was optimal.

Yes and no as is a lot of things, a well fitted bike will enable you to train more and get fitter, a poorly fitted bike has the potential to do the opposite
