How Often Should I Question My Salvation?

I know we shouldn’t doubt salvation but trust in the work Jesus Christ has done for us. But I think we all go through it in some more difficult times, when we struggle with sin and temptation for example, or when we see ourselves not being able to overcome a certain obstacle in our lives. I think we should pray that God gives us that assurance, that we may no longer doubt.

Sometimes even thoughts of sin trip me up heavily, but it's easy to forget that satan also attacks - And we must shift our minds to the finished work of the cross, God knew we would still sin and even blaspheme, but he chose to die for us and forgive us anyway, constantly reminding myself of that helps, because I can never be perfect and give him the glory he truly deserves as long as I am in this fleshly body, but aspiring to give him glory for all eternity is a wonderful endeavor

My friend I know what you are going through. How heavy and troubling it is. When I was a teen and said the sinners prayer I thought I needed to "feel" save. Well I did not feel save and went to a down hill of doubting. Then a light shine in my darkness of doubt. I am not alone. In the bible Moses, Jhon the baptist, Sarah, and Jesus disple all too had doubted. Did God drop them or get an attitude to them, did he snap saying "How dare you! Look how much I've done, and you still doubt me. I am mad, angry, and done with you." Nope, nope, nope, nope. God did not. He gave them all faith remember "faith comes by hearing, and hearing the word of God." Moses doubted he could go to pharaoh and let his people go. God spoke and told him and said He will do all the work only Moses all you have to do is go. I WILL DO THE WORK. When John the Baptist was in doubt, Jesus reminded him of the Miracles that only the Messiah can do, opening his eyes to going from unbelief to believe. Sarah in her old age doubt she could even give birth, she laugh at the idea. God use that moment, that the baby will be name " Isaac which means God's laughter." Her laugh was of disbelief but then God made that laugh be of belief. The bible showed me how having doubt is not this unpardonable sin,God helps us in our doubts, and gives us a reassurance of Salvation because it's putting our faith in Jesus not in our feelings.

You're not alone in your thinking. Many of us who confess that Jesus is our Lord and Saviour, have those thoughts - I know I have. It's a sobering thought to have and one that makes you really reflect on where you at in your walk with Jesus. This only comes from a sincere heart wanting the right relationship with Jesus. But, also trust that nothing we can do, other than accepting we are sinners, accepting Christ as our personal saviour, believing he rose from the dead and is now seated at the right hand of the Father can save us. We are saved by faith in Jesus and his work at the cross. Maybe you're feeling out of step in your daily life, but this is not a sign of anything other than you are a sinner, like all of us, in need of a saviour. If you believe you've accepted Jesus as Lord of your life, than trust that. You'll still have your moments of questioning; have I done enough, will Jesus reject me, am I really saved etc it's natural and part of our humanity. It's not a sign of the truth the Jesus loves you, he died for you and will not reject you. I hope this helps.

This was very helpful. Not long ago I found myself in a position where I was questioning and doubting whether or not I was in the faith. This weighed very heavy on my heart and I was very depressed over it. I still have moments that cause me to question. I have come to this conclusion; if I am in Christ, I have been placed in him before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1). In addition, if I am in Christ, I am in Christ because God is being faithful to his word and is keeping his promises to himself concerning me.

You raise some interesting points. Flawed though they are. Jesus did not need to claim to be God in order to be God. Peter refers to Jesus as God and Savior (2 Peter 1:1) Clearly Peter believed that Jesus is God. By your premise Peter is a heretic. The apostle John in John 5 states that the Jews sought to kill Jesus because they clearly understood that Jesus was making himself equal to God without directly claiming to be God. Jesus himself would be a heretic by using "I am" in reference to himself. (John 8:58) Again, the Jews clearly understood that Jesus was referring to himself as God. Thus they sought to kill him. (John 8:59) Concerning God raising Jesus from the dead, Jesus in a conversation with the Jews, states that he is the one who will raise his body from the dead (John 2:13-22) Jesus would be making yet another blasphemous claim to be God if indeed he were not God so as to raise his body from the dead. I recommend doing a Google search on "how can i be assured that i am among the chosen." The first video that shows up, by Ligonier Ministries, is one that will hopefully encourage you. I think it offers a solid answer that you can stand on in times of doubt, in addition to an affirmation of one of your conclusions. I watched it on 1.5x speed. I hope it helps. There are some other great videos on this topic by Paul Washer and other respected ministers, but I can't find them at the moment.

It's sad to me, as a non-Calvinist, how common this question about doubting one's own salvation is on Calvinist chat sites. It's pervasive among those believing the doctrine because, although they confess God IS good, they can never be sure HE actually loves THEM. Unfortunately, Calvinists are taught to believe that one can only be saved if they are "picked" and there's always, always, the possibility they weren't really 'picked' but just experiencing an episode of 'evanescent grace' from which they are destined to 'fall' by God's eternal decree. They can never really be certain God does love them and saved them. Since they describe and worship a God they say actually made 9/10's of souls,(in His own image), for the very purpose condemning them to eternal suffering for doing that which He decreed for them to do, it is certainly no stretch that He would also fool some into a false security causing them to 'think' they are saved only to pull the heavenly rug out from underneath them at any point in the future. Calvinist's know 'if' God 'picked' them they're going to be OK.... but they can never really know that He did. And if He didn't 'really' pick them, then God doesn't even love them and is just messing with them. Doubting their own salvation is pretty common. How could they not? Their only evidence of salvation is 'good works' ... but are their works ever enough?.... Who can tell? Piper tells us to love God more... but he also teaches, "God knows the future because He created the future", and nothing , nothing can ever happen which god has not already decreed. So, who can love God any more, (or less), than God has already determined? It's sad but a lot of Calvinists must resolve to sleep with one eye open.

Paul's comments in Romans about none do good, is a quote from the psalms regarding 'the fools' who say there is no God. The Calvinist use of it to infer all of mankind only does evil continuously, and is totally unable to, and will not, seek God is a ruse. Scripture is full of illustrations of man, in both the OT/NT both doing good and seeking God.It begins early... in Gen 4 with God's interaction with Cain after his sacrifice is rejected and before he Kills his brother. I doubt everyday . Nothing is ever set for me. I believe in Christ an his life death an resurrection but nothing is ever solid. I know we are called to know our salvation but I just can’t seem to understand how people can know they are saved. The heart is so deceitful. I think we should invest most of our energy praying for God to make us more obedient. The problem with Calvanism and cessationists is undermining the importance of being filled with the holy spirit when one give his life to Jesus. Faith is a spiritual place not your mind or a thought or a position. Though you use your mind to get to that place. So Calvanism end up leaving people holding to a doctrine rather than having a true encounter with God himself. Thats why there is scriptures Jesus tell people He never new them, or the parable were the foolish virgins realized they didn't have enough oil to receive the groom, or ephesians 4 that talk about the Holy Spirit being the guarantee that we are the children of God. I can go further, when Jesus talk about being born of the spirit or true worshipers who worship in spirit and truth. Salvation is not a theological position it is a real encounter with God through the Holy Spirit. Don't base your salvation on doctrines that are subject to man's opinion and interpretation, you need to encounter God for your self and be filled with the Holy Spirit. You Should NOT base your salvation on a sermon or a movement, salvation is not validated by man or doctrines it is validated by God himself. When you are filled with the Holy Spirit you will never question whether you are saved because you have the fullness of His spirit. You know have eternal life because it is physically present in your life.

@542 also from my understanding of gods word that as a true believer in christ when i do sin i confess itv and go on, when im not confessing and im going on in unrepentant sin im feeling distant from my god because he is chastening me due to my not repenting. this chastening and distance is what draws me back to god. also the main thuis is the jesus is still praying for me and god uses secondary circumstances to show me in that wondering sheep and he brings me back to the fold.

This seems to bypass the role of the Holy Spirit in initially establishing salvation. In the context of John 3, seems like we can't determine whether we are saved by our actions or way of life, but rather by whether there has been an objective and independent planting of the Holy Spirit within our hearts, right? I'm struggling to understand this and it's frustrating because I don't think Christians talk about salvation in the context of John 3 enough. 😫

Pastor John's response to the question seems to bypass the work of the Holy Spirit, or maybe he graciously assumes it was implanted already. I just get frustrated and confused when people ask about salvation and the answers given focus only on things we have control over (ex. do you read your bible, pray enough, ask for salvation, etc.). We can't control the Holy Spirit or influence God to send Him to us. It's uncomfortable, but it does seem like there is a huge element to salvation that has entirely nothing to do with our actions or desire to be saved and everything to do with God's will to save us. Am I wrong to think like this?

Every time a born again Christian questions his salvation he blaspheme God. He is saying i don't believe you or your promises. God said we are sealed until the day of redemption. We have the Holyspirit which is Gods down payment on his children his earnest money put down to ensure the transaction will be completed. Ephesians 1:14. Obedience to God is not adding to His sacrifice. It's a requirement for salvation. Be ye holy as I am holy. Be ye perfect as your Father in Heaven is perfect. Most of the times, when the bible refers to works it's talking about the 613 laws of the old covenant. When it's not, it is saying it's God who saves us, but that good works are a good thing (otherwise you couldn't boast about them) and faith without works is dead.
