How to Retwist Your Dreadlocks | The Basics for Beginners |
Hey Guys, in this video I wanted to break down exactly how to retwist your dreadlocks. Essentially I wanted to give you all clarity on how tight and how frequently you should be retwisting. Additionally, I wanted to make sure you understood the importance of twisting your hair wet at all times. This is a question I get nearly EVERY DAY. SO I just wanted to make sure I put out a quality video explaining this to some of our beginner loc family! Hope you enjoy! Like, share comment and subscribe if you do! TP Locks Signing out!

I really wanna shave my head, but because I'm scared i keep gaslighting myself into not doing it. I've cut it, dyed, colored, undercutted, regrew it, and now its about my neck length and dyed purple from half down (I dyed from the roots, but in 3 months my hair grew SO MUCH). Because I keep gaslighting myself into not shaving, I decided I was going to lock it. I did it yesterday and on my 3a/3b fine hair that is dyed, with no product at all. Thankfully I've been hydrating it a lot since I started dyeing so it's very healthy. I've never done it before and don't know anyone that has done it, so videos like this is very helpful.

I had my sister parting my hair and put little bands, and I finger coiled with only water as I've seen in Gunther Da Great's video. Now I'm glad I watched your video right now because I did retwisted today. Now I know not to do it for a least a few weeks. I'm keeping the bands in cuz I intend to keep washing my scalp and if I took out my hair would just turn straight as soon as the water hits my hair, and I don't wanna lose the parts. I'm really exciting to experiment with locs until I decide to finally shave my head. I'll probably re-start once my hair starts regrowing when I do it though

Started my locs back in October. I've been getting them retwistrd every 2 to 3 weeks because I have to wash them every 2 weeks. I can't go longer than 2 weeks without washing because my scalp starts to get dandruff even with me using rose water. Then after I wash some of them unrave so have to get them retwistrd again. How ever I did notice the last time I washed them most of them stayed most of them stayed in. I'll try and go a month without retwisting the next time I wash them.

At what point does the starter loc stage end? About how long before locs are considered mature?
@TPlocks
@TPlocks 4 жыл бұрын
S Landon it all depends on the texture. Looser curl patterns tend to take longer than tighter ones. I’ve had my Locs nearly two years and due to the different textures in my head I still don’t have fully mature Locs. What’s your hair type? (4a, 4b etc.) ?

@@TPlocks I started locking my hair about 5 months ago and I get a retwist once a month. I have tightly coiled hair so my hair type is probably 4b/4c with a couple areas of a looser texture. Are there any signs of when you're past the starter stage into the next? Just trying to get an idea of when to start stretching out the retwists.
@TPlocks
@TPlocks 4 жыл бұрын
Budding is usually your first sign. It’ll appear like a huge hollow swelling of hair in the middle - ends of your locks. Often times it feels like a hair bubble. That’s usually first sign that your hair has begun locking. After that you should start to notice your tips dulling more and your actual Locs become more solid. With your texture you should notice budding writhing 6 months.

Should you not re-twist with your hands if I’ve recently had my locs done. I had gel twists before and I’ve had locs for 2-3 months

@TPlocks
@TPlocks 4 жыл бұрын
Ohhh you’re asking if you should palm roll! That early in the game it’ll definitely depend on how fast your hair matures. If your hair isn’t quite locked the palm roll method may not even be the most affective for you you! I kept going to salon up until 4-5 months and received comb twisting each time for my new growth just to ensure those parts are established well. Also I wouldn’t recommend palm rolling at all if you’ve had a recent Retwist. I’d typically want to wait at least a month between each.

I'm 3 months in and I'm really worried if my hair is being taken of properly. My loc stylist twists my hair every month but I try and wait it out until about 1 month and 2 wks before I go back. The twisting isn't tight but when its styled that's what hurts the most, she said it has to be styled since I started with my hair at shoulder length. I want to take care of my own locs once they drop because I don't feel like the regime my stylist has is good for me. I started with comb coils and because my hair is thin by default I'm just worried about my lack of knowledge on how to maintain it myself.
@TPlocks
@TPlocks 5 жыл бұрын
I would recommend limiting the styling especially considering you’re feeling pain and your hair is on the thinner side already! I understand your stylists approach. Aesthetically it may look better and serve as a protective style but this early in the game I wouldn’t compound stressors like that! It could work our fine but it just seems like a lot!

@@TPlocks I agree No shade to the loctician but she is running a business... Space out the retwisting even longer your hair will get thicker under less stress. 👌🏾👍🏾

hey, my hair is a week old with comb coils. i’m leaving my neighbourhood for some months so want to retwist it at my second week mark before leaving the area. I have to find a new loctician in the near area, is it ok to retwist at the second week? the roots have also grown a lot! (my hair doesn’t last 2 weeks in braids before it grows out)😭

The comb coil method should be retwisted every 4to 6 weeks for the first year and a half of your loc journey ☺️

Hey! I recently got my twists done to start my loc journey. However, the hairdresser cut my hair more than half the length it was originally BEFORE twisting, as she said that my hair was damaged. Hence, my twists are SUPER short, and I don't want to get a re-twist until my hair grows back, even a little, because I am not used to having such short hair, and I don't like it. Any advice?
@TPlocks
@TPlocks 4 жыл бұрын
Well the first question would be what’s your goal for the journey at this point? I can definitely understand the frustration of having hair cut too short but if you want them it’s just gonna be that small obstacle moving forward

@@TPlocks Well I definitely am going to continue the journey... No turning back. However, I want to get my first retwist at one month or two months in, rather than every 2 weeks like the hair stylist suggested. This way, my hair will have a little time to grow before retwisting.
