Ojukwu's insincerity was the problem, which is a thing with the Igbos(I am sorry if it hurts, but its the truth.) Ojukwu wanted another country, but lied to others that they needed to take over Power to correct what was perceived as the wrongs in government and leadership. They agreed to work together to achieve a coup until they realized that Ojukwu had the motive for Biafra, he already pallied with some foreign countries, already printed the Biafra currency and other legal tenders, constitution and documents etc. Other officers from other tribes, especially the yorubas pulled back when they realized Ojukwu's real intention... Its all gone, lets look and move forward.

Why did he simply not accept for Igbos to go. It's really simple. Then and now, Igbos have always wanted to go. And there was a legitimate agreement in support of the separation. Ojukwu asked for a confederation to which Gowon agreed but renegaded later. Ojukwu called an assembly of the Eastern Region and they agreed to secceed. It is therefore incorrect history to blame him. As Igbo I push back because most times when he is blamed he is blamed as a symbol for all Igbos . However, either solely or symbolic of all Igbos, it is still wrong history to blame him.

Gowon was advised by other Nigerian leaders to reject the Aburi Accord & have the Eastern Region accept Nigeria that is already hostile towards them. Banjo was sent by Ojukwu because he was Yoruba & had he not stalled they would have reached Lagos before dawn while everyone was sleeping as seized Lagos which would have forced surrender by the federal government in Lagos. Once that happened, Oduduwa would have been declared & the Western region free from the North's clutches. But it is well. Nigeria is the best country in Africa. It has the biggest population, the most religious country, the happiest people according to studies. "One Nigeria" should be the standard for progress in Africa.
