My favorite piece of foreshadowing is when real world Aubrey is asked why she pushed Basil in the lake knowing he can’t swim and she replies “I didn’t mean to hurt him, I just wanted him to go away” which obviously parallels what happened with Sunny and Mari.

And just imagine if HERO was not able to save BASIL and/or SUNNY. AUBREY would've been in the EXACT same situation as SUNNY, having accidentally killed someone in a brief moment of anger. And it may have been worse in AUBREY'S case since SUNNY may have also drowned trying to save BASIL (though that's kinda ambiguous since SUNNY may have gotten himself out after defeating THALASSOPHOBIA).

The other thing I want to add about how terrifying this game is that a lot of people who did find the "stab" option in the Mewo room felt *relieved* that they had that option. That's such intense psychological horror. It put you in a situation where you were so uncomfortable that you felt taking your own life was better than doing the bad thing. It made you *relieved* that you had the option to k*ll yourself. It literally made you go, "Thank god, I can k*ll myself," and if that isn't fucked up, I don't know what is. The scariest part? Most people don't even realize how scary it is that they were so quick to take the chance to k*ll themselves. Now that is some GOOD psychological horror. Edit: wow i didn't expect my little personal observation would garner any attention but to everyone who also felt the relief when they saw the stab option, i wish you a very good "mayhaps it is time to consult a therapist"

I always felt like part of that is because, generally speaking, stabbing isn't made out to be anything particularly bad by the game. It's a powerful attack and a way to progress in the game, so I think over time you become a bit "numb" to what that really implies, whereas if you cut open Mewo, as far as I remember, she's really gone afterwards, which feels like a much graver consequence than "just a little stab" that you've done so many times before to progress (Which in itself is part of the horror for me, realizing how at some point I wasn't even shocked by the stab option anymore because it just became a natural part of the game) (It's also what imo makes the knife ending much more impactful because it's the first time stabbing has any actual consequences for Sunny/Omori)

--Omori spoilers ahead-- Also, I'm pretty sure there's foreshadowing in Capt Spaceboys character in itself. Spaceboy was miserable and unmotivated to do anything and refused to get out of bed because Sweetheart broke up with him. Just like Hero, which you can know by looking at Kels story in the graveyard when you visit Maris grave, that Hero went through the exact same thing. And, Omori and friends tried to make Spaceboy snap out of it but, despite with good intentions, it turned into an argument (Spaceboys battle), Which, again, is just like what Hero went through. Kel tried to talk to Hero so he could turn back to normal again by simply giving him comfort, but Hero snapped at him and turned into an arguement. In the end, Spaceboy and Hero both forgave the people that turned them back to normal. Honestly figuring this out was such a shock because it resembles each other so well and you can get a clear idea of what Heros state was like through another character.

Alao Sweetheart can represent Mari in a way because of how her emotion is being “Manic” and making all party members angry. With Mari’s perfectionism and love for piano, she was happy with it and wanted to play with Sunny but it was causing him to be angry becaude he kept making mistakes. Also Sweetheart wants to find the perfect suitor and wants everything to be perfect, always never satisfied, and mari was also a perfectionist, working extremely hard to be good on the piano. Ik that the Candy store lady is what inspired Sweetheart, but it could be both Candy store lady and Mari combined that make up sweethearr, and she could be representing the side of mari that sunny hates and what caused him to get angry enough to push Mari in the first place (pressure from mari)

Just going to throw in the horrifying connection between spaceboy’s themes’ titles. The first being “You Were Wrong. Go Back”, which basically is a foreboding warning for sunny to get his shit together before he truly loses his chance at redemption. Then there’s the hikkikomori route, with space exhusband’s “You Cannot Go Back”, as sunny has lost his only chance at owning up to his fatal mistake. Doesnt really help that exboyfriend’s emotions default to extreme anger, which was the emotion that sunny had the day of the recital, while exhusband tries desperately to be devoid of any emotion, which is sunny’s trauma response in the form of his alter, omori. Not the first person to come up with this conclusion, but damn is that true horror.

@@chewbleu that’s really cool. honestly makes a lot of sense to me when looking at perfectheart - who could be seen as what mari truly represents. she’s all powerful and is the hardest boss in the game, and even when you defeat her, unlike the other sweetheart clones, she doesn’t die. could be linked to how sunny doesn’t want to accept mari’s death and how he wants to see her as all powerful who wouldn’t be hurt from a fall like that. and that, of course, perfectheart is still very kind throughout the battle.

One part that I think should be said as well is that: 11:54 Arachnophobia is not only based around spiders, but it embodies a hanging figure looming out of sight. When you lighten it, it's a cord strung around a head with the legs being clumps of hair, and body dangling below. In the fight itself it's the figure looming in front of open curtains and a window in the same manner as the side door to the backyard, as if the "legs" are reaching into the house.

One of my favorite small pieces of foreshadowing that I haven't heard anyone talk about (mind you I'm not all the way through the video) is when you look at the statues outside of the church in the real world and it says something along the lines of "you feel like you're being judged." That was actually the first thing that tipped me off that Sunny's trauma might have been related to guilt over something he did.

Add religion into a home and suddenly you are harshly judged all the time over literally anything you've done, said, worn, look like, and act like. Sunny could've felt judged simply because his parents put the fear in him that the statues see all, and know all; likely and mainly to keep him and mari in line. He could've felt judged for lots of things he did as a younger child barring the fatal accident.

Another psycological horror masterpice in 28:35 is that the Mewo scene reinforces the idea that is good to harm yourself aka stab yourself as a means to scape of situations or just being a better option than harming anyone...and could be seen as smart foreshadowing to the neutral ending where sunny kills himself with a knife to not harm his friends anymore with the truth

I think the moment that really struck a chord with me the most was seeing Omori in the mirror instead of Sunny for the first time after waking up in the Hikkikomori route. It's that peak moment where you realize just how far gone Sunny is by that point. Especially with more subtle details like the height difference, since Omori is based off Sunny from when he was younger (pre Mari's death). I just remember the only thing I could think of in that moment was that looming dread combined with the realization that holy shit, Sunny was actually gone. I thought about where Sunny- no OMORI would go from this point, how the gang would react, etc. So to see him jump in the bad ending like he truly viewed it as a way to achieve eternal happiness was all the more heartshattering. The implications of that ending are so underappriciated for how well done it is.

He was the one who suggested Sunny to hide Mari's death as a suicide instead of admitting it to protect this "innocent" of his friend, but this so called "innocent" is taken so extreme that he keep telling Sunny its going to be ok to hide it when it isnt, completely blaming himself for everything: the murder, the hanging disguide, Omori's sabotage on everyone favourite album book, etc. All of which slowly build up his Something, driving him insane and eventually cause him to commits suicide (had it not for Sunny's stopping him). It was all worth it right? Sunny will forever stays "innocent" right? Well no, his death would cause Aubrey to be the one that would get the blame, causing her to become "the second Sunny" who will eventually drives herself crazy just like him and Sunny did, which would eventually lead to her death too. Kel, Hero and Sunny can barely recover from Mari's death, do you think they can accept his death and eventually Aubrey's? What if they also took the *same path* down? Especially since Hero blame himself for unable to notice Mari's depression which dont freaking exist, they have all suffer and blaming themselves because of a fault that wasnt their except for Sunny, who commited something he never wanted to. Speaking of Sunny who is the elephant in the room, in the mind of a kid being able to hid from the problems and prevent the worst possibility of Sunny being hated by everyone if they just hid it is great, but this was a rapid thought without proper thinking. In the case of admitting, sure the worst outcome would be Sunny being hated forever by everyone which he feared, but what about other outcomes? A grey one thats more likely to happen would be he is hated by them but later on as everyone grow up they would understand Sunny and reconcile with him, while the best outcome would be everyone understand and forgive Sunny's fault, which would release him of his guilts (based on the secret cutscene of the good ending both the grey and best outcome would happened not the worst). While in the case of lying, he effectively back everyone into a corner (talked about on top) except for Sunny who is thrown into a pit thats slowly filling up with his own insanity. Sunny already carries the guilt from the sight of his death sister, but the sorrow of his friends just worsen it tenfold, his withdrawal from the world cause his Something alongside Omori to grow more and more, both of which slowly killing him physically and mentally, where he is put through something making Hell a joke: a coping world that slowly disintergrate, leaving nightmares he has to received again and again and again until he could no longer accept it and commits suicide, is this really any better than being hated by everyone? Is this really a good price to pay for "innocent"? Now im not typing this as a Basil's hater, i both hate and love him as a character as his actions was felt personally by me who had choosen to lie and get the same problems as both him and Sunny growing up (tho minus the killing someone part). I wish i could tell him he shouldnt take that path, maybe things would have been worse or better but hiding it just isnt the way.

@@henrycooper3431 i think op and MOST people who like or love basil (me included) understand that what he did was wrong and was not the best way to handle things. you’d have to be completely checked out to not get that from playing the game. because obviously. but the point behind op’s comment isn’t about whether or not what happened from it was right- it was intention. basil was 12-13 at the time and was already dealing with mental problems at the time, he didn’t know any better. you have full grown adults do the same thing as basil because they are panicking and aren’t thinking right. but basil was young and didn’t know that what happened could have easily been seen as an accident, he thought sunny would be arrested or at least be seen as an awful person by his friends and family. and honestly- i don’t blame him since people in the fandom see sunny as an awful person despite having all the context. no one is arguing that what basil did was right- they are just arguing that basil deserves sympathy and love because all he was trying to do was help his friend. that’s the point.

I did consider STABbing Omori anyway, though, just to escape. But at the same time, I felt like that was the entire point! Me, wanting to escape, jus like Sunny... I did the same endless pacing around between each and every dialogue prompt. When Mewo was finally cut open, I cried. My friends (and, just like yours, one had actually played the game) cheered for me mockingly(?) for having finally cut her open. It was horrible ;v;

One thing Omori does, I would argue better than any other story, is suck you into the character's trauma and make it feel like your own. It does this by making you think and feel like Omori/Sunny is a self-insert sort of character for you to project yourself onto only for the game to then slowly project his character and personality and memories back onto you. Part of the reason the truth reveal is as horrifying as it is is because the game has thoroughly conditioned you to feel as if these are memories that you have been repressing, and this same tactic is also used in regards to the happier, more nostalgic memories too, especially upon reaching Memory Lane.

5:40 What I personally find creepy about the picture of someone familiar turning into something is, that when I experienced the moment in my second playthrough, I instantly hit the record button on my Nintendo switch. I revived my video and slowed it down but it somehow didn't capture something appearing. The picture frame and the little table simple dissappear while making a strange noise, something however is nowhere to be seen. Now, the reason to this could be the switch because I don't know how many frames it actually records but it scared me a lot when it happened to me

One piece of foreshadowing I really like as well is the Wise Rock with some of its lines, particularly the "Anything is okay as long as you're not caught" one, which hints at the cover up if Mari's death (Clearly it wasn't okay and things still went downhill afterwards, but it's exactly the kind of reasoning that could lead a child to do such a cover-up)

That part of Black Space involving Mewo definitely left a mental scar on me. Thinking back on it now, I can't believe I never thought of checking the menu for a different option. Everything was just so surreal at the time and it totally slipped my mind. I don't know if anyone else also got the chills when that cat butler thing said Mewo's line, that gave me insomnia the entire night after. It's such an amazing and horrifying game.

When you were talking about Yumi nikki and bad dreams, I remembered a dream long ago. It was New Years' Day, and my family got messy drunk. It was only my mum and 2 of my close aunties, who stayed sober, whilst everyone else's bodies were sprawled out across couches and beds. I was so scared that they'd get violent, so I went to sleep later. Then I had a dream where it played "All I want for Christmas", with a feeling of "A burning memory" from "Everywhere at the end of time", with it beginning with static, yet started to form into an image of my family at a dinner table, all dead of alcohol poisoning, and since I don't like fireworks, sometimes I would witness their heads slowly disappearing with a bright flash and a bang. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

I think the reason that Sunny is scared of spiders, is that it reminds him of the rope him and Basil used to frame Mari’s death. The stairs fear is pretty straight forward. Sunny’s fear of water manifests into seaweed, which appear to have people hanging on the bottom.
@autumn_sunday
@autumn_sunday Жыл бұрын
I think at one point, it's revealed that SUNNY fell into the lake near the old hangout spot because there was a large spider/tarantula on his shoulder. It's also notable that someone said, "MARI said we aren't allowed to go in there ever since SUNNY fell in." Maybe THALASSOPHOBIA is MARI's hair, or (like you said) seaweed.

Also the game loves to add foreshadowing even when it has nothing to do with the ending. If you talk to the guy in the graveyard inside the church on day two, he says that the spirits have been restless and that they maybe preparing a welcome party. Originally I thought this was about basil but it was about his grandma.

in the DEEP WELL i think it was, somewhere along the line, you see a man cutting down a tree and saying 'you are not my son..' which i didn't think much of and was very confused but ended up realizing very later that it indicates that the mother and father knew what SUNNY did, but also covered it up i don't why he was cutting the tree that MARI was hung up on, (bad memories, i guess?) so i don't know if that counts as foreshadowing but i thought it was pretty cool that they added it so we at least know what happened between SUNNY and his dad

I have really bad arachnophobia, but weirdly enough the depictionnof it in Omori doesn’t affect me much. I feel slightly uneasy, but not to the usual point of recoiling in fear and having to look away. It’s weird cause it is still distinctly spider-esque, but I guess it’s just abstract enough that it doesn’t get associated with a real spider.
@Ominous_Odyssey
@Ominous_Odyssey Жыл бұрын
Weirdly, I experienced this as well. Typically just the image of a spider is enough to cause an immediate anxiety attack. It perturbed me my first time fighting it and walking through the spider-filled room, but it didn't turn me away enough to stop playing or have to covered my eyes. I even felt comfortable enough to draw it for an art project later on. As you said, it's strange because it is very clearly and distinctly a spider.

I was always super proud cause I guessed what happened to Mari really early on, tho not that sunny did it. The first time you enter real world and get the Mari jumpscare mixed with the panic attack on the stairs I was SURE she died because of the stairs. Later when you see Sunnys dad hitting the tree with the rope saying „you’re not my son“ I thought she committed suicide and was confused on which it is but obviously I pieced it together at the end

Omori is so messed up, I never even thought about how messed up the Mewo scene was in black space, I remember watching the playthrough how upset I was as the game was persistent about cutting open Mewo making it seem like the only way out but at the same time it seemed like the game didn't want us to cut open Mewo as it kept in asking if you were sure you wanted to cut him open and becoming more and more graphic in the description as you kept on attempting as if trying to scare you away from cutting him open when you yourself did not want to cut Mewo open but it seemed like the only way out and once Mewo is dead and you realize that Mewo didn't need to die to get out and the only way to leave was to stab yourself which you could've done the whole time was such an antagonizing feeling that you killed it for no reason and I felt less remorse watching Omori stab himself then the other times he did as if I felt he deserved it for what he had done, and that is really antagonizing feeling as Omori has this really surreal way of making you feel like you are truly Sunny despite me not playing the game myself and only watching a play through I truly felt like I was Omori in all these situations with all these choices in a way that is almost unnatural that I feel myself in the character more then I ever have for any other character in a way it becomes almost unreal, it's not just "oh that's relatable!" I mean I have never truly experienced what Sunny experiences throughout the game but it feels like I am him and so it hurts so deeply to see the playthrough see what he goes through watch him stab himself see his memories and friends and feel the guilt that Sunny feels for killing Mari despite Mari dying being an even that happens before the game starts and there was nothing I could do to stop it I felt genuine guilt for Mari's death and so to actually feel that way that I would actually genuinely choose to watch myself die instead of killing a literal cat is such a hopeless feeling, I mean the whole game feels hopeless it makes it feel like you have no choice in the series of events yet it gives you all these options and every single thing you do is a choice that you put yourself on that route and you could have changed everything despite the fact that it doesn't feel that way until what has already happen has happened, it's just like real life you feel all this pressure on you to make a decision that despite the choice being evident everything points in one direction as if there game puts the other choices in the dark despite the fact that both choices hold the same amount of importance it feels like you have no choice even though it is there until the decision has been made and you look back and realize that you should've done this instead or said that over this. And that is exactly how it feels to make everyday decisions irl and exactly how I felt when given the choice to cut open Mewo, during the moment I felt as if there was no choice (i didn't have a choice I was watching a playthrough but there was this illusion of choice) but after Mewo was cut open I felt this overwhelming sense of regret for actions that were not my own like "oh no the person playing the playthrough should've just let this character that I see as myself and the person also probably sees as themself die" like I was willing to feel a myself and someone else die (in a dream but it has the same effect of wanting to die) just so a cat can live, and I bet that if I met the person playing the game irl i would not have this feeling of wanting them to die (in game) but I feel like it would be a good decision because they are the one piloting Sunny and I feel like I am Sunny myself in other words I felt like he was me and I just don't know how to feel this game has such a big impact and making you feel things you're not it's physiological horror is just unbelievably good.

The MEWO segment can be seen as a foreshadowing too: you kill someone (here MARI's cat so maybe MEWO is a representation of the "good" part of MARI) and figure out that you didn't need to do that, so it's probably a way to show what SUNNY did

I'd argue Spec Ops The Line kinda is a psychological horror in it's own way in the form of subverting how FPS games usually play. You aren't The Hero in this game, you're a war criminal and are committing vile acts because you ignored your orders. Everything spiraled out of control the moment you ignored your orders and attempted to fiddle in things you had no understanding of. And every action afterwards only hastened the downward spiral into hell. You get to watch first hand what happens to good intentions when they are taken too far.
