One interesting detail: I like that the realistic hand itself is consistent. What I mean is that it’s always the right hand that is shown. In the photo where SUNNY shoves his sister down the stairs, you can see his right arm is the one he used in that altercation, and in THE TRUTH segment in the recital room, his right hand is the one that’s losing fingers. The hand shoving him down the SOMETHING IN THE DARK encounter is also a right hand. This is very good attention to detail and a lot of other games sometimes don’t get this stuff right. It shows how much effort and revision must have gone into OMORI.

I’d also like to point out that the right hand is the hand that holds the bow when playing the violin, and is therefore the hand to create sound!!

I see the finger chopping as Sunny beating himself up/self harm over what happened to Mari. He sees himself as a monster, and he fantasizes about chopping his own fingers or hands off because his subconscious knows even if his mind is starting to remember and hasn't remembered The Reveal quiet yet, or maybe Sunny was in this mind-frame of "I did it, didn't I..?" as he starts to realize some of the details around her death. That's why the 2 pictures with the scare chords are right after this scene, Sunny's mind is going "wait, she fell down the stairs.. I put her in bed... oh no... I killed her, didn't I?" and a moment later he tries to remember, and yup. He _did_ kill her.

I like the interpretation. I did see another comment from another video saying that the finger chopping symbolizes that Sunny was caught "red-handed" or something like that since his hands were all starting to be covered by his blood and I think that's a good interpretation too.

Since the circle of fingers point at him when what happened could no longer be denied, I figure it's also because with each picture it's harder to deny it. So with each picture, a finger is cut off to add to the circle of fingers pointing at him, accusing him

I think that it means he can't escape the truth anymore. Once that last finger is gone, he can't hide it from himself anymore. I think my theory is further supported because of the fact that hands are the things that teleport you when you go too far in white space, essentially bringing you back to it no matter what.

A couple points you didn't bring up: First, with regards to Basil in the bedroom and the accompanying photo, the whole thing bears striking resemblance to the beginning of the opening sequence when you first start a new game. Basil putting his hands on a crying Sunny's shoulders and telling him "everything is going to be okay." Second, and perhaps my favorite bit of symbolism in the sequence, with the photo of the push itself and only that photo, you are offered a yes/no prompt to pick it up. By that point, the player and presumably Sunny likely knows what it's going to show, so the prompt and the chair combine to be one last form of denial of the event, albeit a shallow one that is entirely unsustainable unless you don't do anything.

@Dhalin
@Dhalin 2 жыл бұрын
@@toasteroven7683 The White Lightbulb is meant to be the Yin-Yang to the Black Lightbulb in White Space. The Branch Coral says that the black lightbulb is the "repression of an idea". Breaking it was the beginning of the ending of the repression. What was repressed? The fact Sunny pushed Mari which directly led to her death. So, for Sunny to uncover that photo of what he did with his own hand, he had to take that lightbulb that he got by confronting the truth of what happened that day, and screw it in to illuminate the photo, one final act that Sunny does to declare to himself that he is no longer going to repress it. By screwing in a white light bulb, he's doing the exact opposite of repressing. Another neat tidbit: All of the photos, every single one of them, have been out of order up until that photo. But, once you get that photo, the rest of them are in perfect order.
@acetylen42

@@SerialIntrovert Most of the black and white cutscenes between Faraway and Headspace seem to show the actual events that happened, only without context and sometimes with slight symbolism. Like, there's the one before first waking up as Sunny where Basil is helping Sunny deal with the emotions of seeing his photographs after what they did. Then the whole cutscene literally gets scribbled out which makes it the exact moment Sunny blacked out the photos. Basil's line "Let's make some new memories together, okay?" hits so much harder once you know what actually happened later. He's such a tragic character - the only thing he wanted was to not be alone and for his friends to be with him, and he ends up being eaten by guilt over causing the exact opposite.

I always interpreted the losing of fingers as the loss of control. Ive always thought the theme of hands in omori double as symbolism for having control and also his accident.
@Dhalin
@Dhalin 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm. This is actually a rather good theory as to what was meant. Sunny realizes that Mari fell down the stairs, Basil says "Everything is going to be OK" and then he steps out into the concert hall room and the next several photos involve him picking Mari up, holding her, Basil looking at his hands, as the whole situation spirals out of their control, despite Basil's attempts to reassure Sunny. Somewhere, deep down, Sunny knows that this will _not_ be OK, it never will be.
@K1NG-R3X
@K1NG-R3X 3 жыл бұрын
I personally see it as a symbolism of the phrase "The Truth hurts". Everytime Sunny finds out more about the truth, he feels more hurt by what he did. Since all of the happenings in Omori are his fault. Aubrey's downfall, her bullying of Basil, Hero's depression, all of it is because he hid the truth, so finding out about it hurts.

"Bad Morning" (and the room it's played in!!) is also seen in Black Space when Omori is chasing after Basil trying to "rescue" him. In fact, the lamp is right there, and if you interact with the lamp, it says "There is no light bulb here." This is the very same room that you find when going through the Truth sequence. But, Omori was never interested in the Truth, was he? Quite the opposite.. he was intent on killing headspace Basil because he just wouldn't quit pulling the Truth out into the light. Omori probably knew that memory (photo) was laying on the ground, but walked right past it and Sunny's mind just didn't notice it because the room was dark, due to the lack of a light bulb.
@Emma_Wrox
@Emma_Wrox 3 жыл бұрын
Another very interesting thing close to this is that at the end of black space, same room omori kills basil and sits on the throne of hands, on the edges of the path leading up to basil there are actually 4 sprites that consist of 2 light pixels with red around them, and interacting with them simply reads “Finger.” I’m not entirely sure how it makes sense as it’s *before* sunny loses his fingers in the truth segment, but I definitely feel that it relates to that. As it seems sunny lives in “cycles” (since black space and the truth keeps getting moved, at the end of Humphrey the wall keeps talking about breaking the cycle, as well as the headspace reset in hikkikomori), sunny might have discovered the truth once or several times before omori simply ‘reset’ his memories again.
@Dhalin
@Dhalin 3 жыл бұрын
@@Emma_Wrox hmm. I'm kinda curious as to what happens if you overlay the two maps together, if the locations of the photos in the concert hall match up with where the fingers are laying in that area... doubt it, but you never know. It sounds crazy, about as crazy as the fact that the weird tone you hear at the very beginning of the game (before you see white space for the first time) is exactly the same as the tone you hear in the Hiko Route when Omori saves Basil before he ascends the ladder of hands up to Neighbor's Bedroom and there's only one other place the tone is played: If you lose to Omori and wake up in White Space as Omori right before he throws himself off the hospital roof.
@Emma_Wrox
@Emma_Wrox 3 жыл бұрын
@@Dhalin just looking through recordings of both that place and the truth segment, I can say that they most definitely won’t line up exactly, since the spacing between the fingers are far more than the photos (understandable as the path is also far longer), however, they do alternate side (from bottom to top) left, right, left, right, which is the same as the truth segment (assuming the stage where you spawn is the “middle”) so I guess to a miniature scale?
@Dhalin
@Dhalin 3 жыл бұрын
@@Emma_Wrox I wonder if the horizontal placement lines up, though. And yeah, the Red Space section is definitely stretched out to build up tension as you walk and walk and walk and follow the drag marks with that eerie screeching in the background, BUT, if the Photos line up horizontally... then that would be incredibly amazing.

Yeah, I always interpreted it as this as a manifestation (?) but also serving as an allusion to the pain he's feeling re-living the truth of what happened that day. Why it's depicted as his fingers getting chopped **off**, I'm not quite sure. But given how Omori in a lot of ways was an extremely violent manifestation of how his coping mechanisms had served to protect him but became no longer needed / got in the way of recovery, the brutal visualization here too as he continues down that painful path toward acceptance and recovery feels fitting.

A bit of an idea for the hand thing. The photorealistic hand is the same hand from the first encounter sunny has with something on the stairs. 10:16 This is also what Sweetheart's castle turns into if you take up the Keeper of the Castle's offer, which you can only do on the hikikomori route. I actually saw it on that route before I saw it here, and it didn't make much sense to me at the time. Sunny's (or, perhaps more accurately, Omori's) deepest desire is for everything to go back to the way it was, and how the castle is transformed reflects that.

since i am stupid, the scene of Mari's hair with one of her eye changing into something blew my mind. Since The incident happened when sunny is so young and clueless, the view must have struct him so hard, and his memory could not erase it completely, and istead, distorted it in such a way. It is really ironic to reflect how guilt could easily rip a view of one person.

I like them both. As someone struggling with thoughts that aren't exactly _nice,_ and mental health issues always a shadow in the corner of my eye, I'm glad that they didn't shy away from being explicitly clear on what was happening in the bad ending. The song hit hard, and watching Sunny spiraling downward, spiraling for the last time...That hit hard too. But the hardest hit came when I reopened the game to play the good ending, and nobody was there... Just an endless sky as the world went on without him in it. That being said, I liked the good ending as well. They made it so hopeful, heartwarming and inspiring. They also made it daunting, heartwrenching, and difficult to choose. But above all, they made it clear that getting to this point was a long, hard struggle, and it wouldn't all just stop hurting afterward. The trauma was still going to hurt, and he'd still struggle... But he realized that his friends would be there to help, that he was loved, and knows to reach out when he needs them. He realized that he isn't alone. And that's why I like BOTH the bad and good endings... I can relate to both. I can relate to that downward spiral, and wishing I could make the choice to just spiral one last time and never, ever hurt again. I can also relate to that feeling of hope when those you care about say that they'll be there, that you aren't alone, and the hope that you'll make it in spite of all the struggles and pain you've had to/will continue to endure. The hope, scary as it is, that you _dare_ to have... The hope that you'll eventually be okay again.

I saw one comment about the finger chopping him beating himself up. I disagree. Hold a large item in your hand you have a grip of it. Remove one finger. The grip is weaker. In my opinion it's him losing his grip on the lies and slowly coming to reality. If you look at the hand it's Omori's hand. Omori is loosing his grip on Sunny. But to do so it's causing a lot of pain in the process. The more Omori "loses his grip" on Sunny the more Sunny can embrace the truth.

i think the hand might have something to do with the fact that omori’s power is fading as sunny finds out the truth. omori sits on a red throne made of hands, which symbolises his control over the dream world and his suppression of the truth about mari. as sunny finds out the truth, omori’s control begins to fade as he isn’t able to hide it any more, which could be represented by the hands losing their fingers

My favourite scene over the whole Truth sequence is likely when Sunny sits on the armchair, it would turn into a bright, peaceful room with descriptions of how great the environment is, but when Sunny gets down, everything turns into hell. It's especially brilliant, considering how in the hikki route, it's omori ideal room It's a perfect visual representation to make the players actually feel how Sunny feels to suppress the truth compared to accepting it, making us truly understand why he would have coped with the method he used

My favorite part of this sequence is the armchair in the room with the falling photo. Sitting on it kind of represents a piece of Sunny’s old coping mechanisms, and both the good and bad that comes with them. On one hand, the escapism allows you to take a break from an overwhelming situation. It could paradoxically make it easier for Sunny to pick up the photo, for all we know. But theoretically, the chair can also be used in an unhealthy way, like the rest of headspace is. What if Sunny were to decide that the chair was not just a temporary place to relax, but a place to stay forever to avoid the picture in front of him? He’d be in a calm refuge of a place... but he’d never be able to get up from the armchair, and would never be able to participate in a more fulfilling scenario in the outside world for as long as he refused to move.

the truth sequence is by far my favorite part of the game, to me, it's one of the best plot twist reveals I've seen in most media. the whole time you were lead to believe that mari had committed suicide, then you take a horrific and agonizing trip down memory lane and find out it was actually manslaughter at the hands of her little brother. also, the amount of foreshadowing that leads to this point is outstanding.

3:30 More than that. The entire truth sequence is played out in the dream, meaning that there is no rational way that a "truth photo album" could exist in real life. The reason why Basil gives you this is because the photo album withholds your memories permanently, similar to the way that Basil will forever be cursed with the knowledge of Mari's true cause of death.

About the chopped fingers, every interpretation can be possible. But the first thing that came to my mind was that during Sunny and Mari's rehearsals for the recital, his fingers would've hurt from how long he was playing the violin. His fingers hurt and he can't even play the violin as perfectly as Mari expects him to be. He played the violin just so he could spend more time with his sister, but with him breaking the instrument and accidentally pushing Mari down the stairs, it ironically made it no longer possible for him to see her at all. An easy explanation of it in Sunny's POV would be "If I didn't have my hands to push Mari, this wouldn't happen."

I always found the "Mari's eye being open" scene as a figurative narrative, as in "I can still see you, Sunny." even after she was dead. Something being her literal dead shadow/clump of hair was the most creative thing I've ever seen, and makes a whole lot of sense looking back at the game. It's giving me the vibes of Sunny never being able to get over Mari being dead and that his sister is still haunting him, albeit in a more creepy way. It can also be a literal representation of trauma, and that Something was a product of said-trauma. Why he can't get over her and in extension, it. Ugggghhhhh the moment I saw the noose and the shadow I was like "THIS WAS SO CREEPY BUT SO FUCKING CREATIVE. BUT ALSO THE SCARIEST THING A MALADAPTIVE DAYDREAMER WITH TRAUMA CAN THINK OF." I really regret sleeping on this game, I'm seriously hooked. 😭

I believe the main reason why the photos are based on Basil's point of view is that Sunny still have not accepted the truth, that is why he is looking at it on a third person's perspective. He is still dissociating himself from the events. That is why once he picks up the photo where he pushed down Mari, all the photos beyond slowly shifts from Basil's point of view to Sunny's point of view. When one undergoes a traumatic event, some people dissociate themselves from the event by telling it in a third person's perspective. By doing so, it is making their mind believe that the event did not happen to them, but to someone else. That is why usually in a traumatic response, acceptance is the hardest to do since it makes you accept that yes, those events happened to you, and yes, it still affects you to this day.

This portion of the game might be the most memorable scene I've experienced in any game - not only does it deliver one of the biggest, most horrifying twists I've ever seen, but it does so in a way that is completely unique and is only possible in its medium, thereby showcasing the potency of videogames not just as mere mindless entertainment but as a means of telling a story.

I see the finger chopping as a last-ditch effort of Sunny's mind trying to stop him from remembering. In the scene, Sunny gets more and more mutilated as he picks up more photos and the way I see it is as a way Omo-cat was showing us that.

I accidentally spoiled myself about the truth about Mari’s Death (Thank you Fandom) so I already knew she was dead all along but I did not know what they did with her body by framing it as suicide so it was kinda left me shocked and speechless for sometime. To be honest Mari being dead was sth you could guess before they mention it in the game. In your first night IRL, if you open the door before going to sleep and encounter Mari, you can infer that she's dead by the reflection on the bathroom's mirror, you can even infer that she died hung up by her twisted neck. But even if you don't open the door on the first night, the fact that there's no trace of her in the house, Sunny hasn't come out in four years and Kel is worried are pretty obvious hints

About the hands, I interpreted them a bit differently. A recurring thing in Omori is that Omori is always near red hands. He even sits on a throne of them and holds Basil captive with them, showing he’s definitely in control of them. They drag you back to whitespace if you wander too far, keeping you away from the truth. When Sunny picks up the pictures, parts of his memories come back and a finger comes off symbolizing Omori losing grip on Sunny’s mind. Once he’s picked up all the pictures, the hand has no fingers and Sunny knows the truth. Omori loses his grip on him completely and that’s why they have to fight over it. I know the hand isn’t red but the realistic look of it makes me think it’s still Omoris. It’s kind of greyish which could be Omoris actual hand instead of the red ones he controls.

Oh yeah, the scribbling over the family photo means: Sunny, after 4 years of being a hikikomori, clearly might forget everyone. (Remember the hellmari jumpscare and who was behind you door when you opened it? Remember meeting kel, as who he was before you opened the door? That's right, Sunny remembers his friends are their Headspace versions.) But yes, Sunny, for some reason, never forgot Mari.

The moment I saw the photo of Mari and Sunny arguing, everything became clear. I skipped a heartbeat I couldn't believe it. It was "Oh... please no..." I couldn't contain my tears. Playing that whole sequence at 1 in the morning was something I'll never forget, even still replaying it again, it hurts just as badly. I never noticed the symbolism of how the photos were arranged, and how the places was basically reconstructing the truth. My favorite detail is definitely the last picture, where Mari looks back at Sunny. That was the moment Sunny's mind broke. Despite not breathing, she wasn't dead yet, but they went and hanged her, they loved her, and they killed her.

Even if you can still be "alive" after not breathing technically, I think the game wanted to signal to us that Mari wasn't alive before they hung her. Trust me, I want to think that they hung her and killed her- that's a headcanon want to have, but I just don't know if that's the case

While i feel she was more than dead by the time she was moved, it is possible, given the fact that SOMETHING’s main characteristic is its eye, it could be symbolism for what her DEAD EYES possibly could have “saw”. Bc in one of the route before the Last Resort segment (the boardwalk sequence), instead of KEL being at the dock, it’s MARI herself. It’s hinted that during this segment that it wasn’t HEADSPACE MARI that ur with, but that its MARI herself as a ghost of sorts. While far-fetched, it could be MARI’s ghost’s perspective of events in the photos? And she’s showing us the truth from HER perspective? Idk about the last part, but the first part of my comment is more likely than the last. 😅

@Alyssa Coon yeah, tbh the 2nd part of my comment was early-morning spitballing too. But yeah, that makes sense too. Ive seen OMORI fanfics explore the “Basil’s memories/thoughts being in Sunny’s dreams” theme, and it DOES make sense, especially in the Hikkikomori route w/ Deeper Well and Black Space(s). While its highly unlikely, i kinda hope the creators continue OMORI in some fashion, whether by games, manga, etc., just to get a better glimpse into the story and lore of OMORI. Different perspectives and such.

regarding the fingers trope that was used a few times in the game, i always interpreted it as sunny spitefully regretting playing the violin at all, as that was the catalyst to everything in a self loathing and self harming twist, we visibly watch as his fingers are severed if i didnt have fingers, i couldnt play the violin if i didnt play the violin, i couldnt play with mari if i didnt play with mari, she wouldnt have been so hard on me if she wasnt so hard on me, i wouldnt have gotten mad if we had never fought, she would have never fallen everything would be ok in a similar twist we see dismembered fingers on the bloody trail to basil in red space, where the red hands stole him away and omori has to save him- where he instead decides to kill basil and takes his seat on the throne of hands if basil didnt have fingers, he couldnt have tied the noose surprisingly, everything might have actually been ok if he didnt notice that mari's head is, naturally, tilted down to the ground as she hangs- yet her eye is fixated on the boys- requiring her to hold her eyeball up to look at them many argue that eyes dont need to be closed for someone to be dead, but that completely misses the point the point is her head is DOWN, but her eye is looking UP she was still alive :^( the stairs didnt kill her, and instead the noose did, and thats why basil was so much more distraught over the event than you might expect, thats why he asks you to forgive him, and it's why despite your actions, he's still equally as guilty
@DezAmmySel
@DezAmmySel 3 жыл бұрын
But you also have to remember... Sunny and Basil were both children when this happened. They may not have known that one's eyes could stay open after death. She could have had that eye open, looking down, but in their horror, all they could think was that she was still looking at them... _Blaming them._ The part where Mari's corpse transforms into that Something signifies that this is still just the way Sunny's mind recalls the events, even as he tries to recall them as they happened, his young mind was full of panic and grief, and it's reasonable that he assumed that. He was only a child... Basil probably felt awful that he came up with that _childish_ plan to help Sunny, only to realize that he only made things worse for him in the long run as they both matured and Basil watched him continue to hide himself away... Only once he'd matured did Basil realize the consequences of his plan, and he blamed himself entirely for Sunny's continued decline.

I agree with most things here, save for the last part. The game has made it a point to show the player over and over that while Mari was still in bed (when Sunny and Basil brought her up) she was already *no longer breathing* -- meaning she already died before they hung her. I also agree with the comment above -- that while Mari's eye was open due to the body's muscles relaxing, the eye looking directly at them may have been a distortion of what they were truly seeing due to how they were under such pressure, panic and grief. It's probably because they knew subconsciously that they were guilty and none of this was okay, and so Mari 'looking' at them solidified for them that they are the ones to look for for blame.

One detail that I haven't seen mentioned much is that the cover of the photo album in the real world and in headspace is 'Basil's Memories' Which makes sense in the context of the truth scene. Aside from the fact we see both of Basil's hands in multiple photos, the photos are literally INSIDE 'BASIL'S MEMORIES' (though technically just Sunny's perception of them but you get it). I just thought that was a really neat detail that's easy to miss.

when I experienced the truth sequence, I was clueless. One thing I do with any piece of media is try my best to not think or theorize while playing or on my off time of playing, that way everything is a surprise. As I was picking up each and every photo nothing clicked. I didn't get what it was trying to tell me. I knew something had happened, I knew something was bad, but it all hit me when the final slideshow of all the photos happened. it hit me all at once. I was stunned. Finally for the first time in my entire playthrough I couldn't stop thinking about how terrible it was, how I would feel in that situation, how I knew that none of my friends could ever forgive me, I felt all the exact same guilt sunny did. I was terrified of myself. It took a lot to continue after that, I still haven't played the bad ending but I already know what the outcome is, (thanks a lot spoilers) but I feel like if I had the choice to do the bad ending straight away as that happened on my first playthrough, I would of done it. The Truth sequence is by far the most emotional and mind bending scene I have ever experienced in any game. Omori will forever be my favourite game because of this one part. It was truly an experience.

Spoiler for the shut-in/omori route that I thought was interesting after watching this If Omori destroys sweetheart's castle via the Keeper, it becomes a room identical to the "happy" version of the one where the big reveal occurs. When Sunny sits in the chair and the room brightens, 10:20 , it's also identical in dialogue to when Omori sits in that room. I wonder what that could mean.

What I love about this is Sunny's parents knew the truth and helped the kids with the framing possibly by refusing an autopsy by citing religious reasons and cremating the body. His father resents him and by the behaviour of the mother(Not interacting with him much letting him become a shut in) I think she has not forgiven him as well. It seems to me that they thought reviling the truth will only make things worse... Boy where they wrong! Anyway thanks for making this great video.

For me the chair room and the room with scattered instruments here mean so much to me. Sitting in the chair with everything seeming normal really does give the player a perspective as to how nice it seems to repress everything and pretend nothing happened. He's dissociating further from the truth like that, which isn't a healthy coping mechanism but knowing how he was young, that was probably his only good option- to him at least. That moment on the chair could also we his last moment of denial, despite everything already becoming painfully obvious at that point- hence the moment when you get off the chair. That's what dissociating *is*. Pushing away from the current reality to mentally place yourself somewhere seemingly safer because you most likely don't have a good place to process everything healthily. The music that follows after you pick up the two shocking photos of realization is like some kind of anxiety. I feel like Sunny probably flinched seeing the two photos hence the piano cords. To me its almost like him being triggered by seeing them and starting to become afraid, but he's remembering more as he goes. and I think the hands pointing at him is him starting to panic and immediately blame himself for what he's done. also I agree with the interpretation of the hand losing fingers being Omori losing control and 'the truth hurting', because the truth hurts. I really loved this video and analysis I think this sequence is definitely one of my favorites sections of the game tbh.

I think the fingers being chopped off could represent how sunny thinks he deserves some kind of punishment for killing mari. I heard cutting off someone’s fingers is/was sometimes used as a punishment that was symbolic to clearing someone’s red hands, or in other words someone repenting for their crimes, so that could tie into how sunny holds a grudge against himself for killing mari. The game also shows some hints that suggests sunny cuts himself, such as omori stabbing himself to wake up sunny, so there could also be a connection between the hands being chopped off and sunny cutting himself. In this case I think the connection is Sunny’s hatred against himself for killing mari

the truth album is my favorite part of the game, it’s so genius. if you think about it, the player isn’t the only one finding out the truth. sunny is as well. through the album, this is basically sunny realizing he’s been lying to himself the entire time, and has been forcing himself to forget and hiding behind the lie that mari hung herself. hiding behind that lie not for the sake of not getting in trouble, but for the sake of his own sanity. to not have to take on the mental damage of killing his own sister. the truth album represents sunny realizing that he needs to stop hiding from the truth. that he needs to stop running away, that he can’t live in his precious little world of sunshine and rainbows forever.
