I think the 2016 Giants’ success was largely a mirage. The GM went on a spending spree to upgrade the defense, and the O under “offensive genius” McAdoo was quite anemic and got exposed the following year when the D couldn’t carry the team.

This was the most bizarre thing I had seen in the NFL at the time. Giants had beaten Green Bay previously in a playoff game (4 years before I think?) They seemed to be on top of the world. Then there was this mysterious "Justin Bieber" party.. (Justin is a Packer fan)... Thought that was odd. They came out against Green Bay and played a decent half at first... leading 6-0... trailed only 14-13 in the 3rd... Then OBJ started acting like a baby during the game. They lost 38-13 and HAVE NOT recovered since! It was a huge turning point for the Giants. Much like how Newton's post SB Press conference... he and the Panthers were never the same after that.

The Boat Pic was just a half way point between last winning season now. Giants were on a downward spiral since the Super Bowl. Jerry Reese the GM at the time struggled to build a team through the draft, messing up pretty much any pick past the 2nd round. Made the team top heavy. Here comes 2016 and for the first time the Giants spends big in FA to fix the defense. Defense was an issue between 2014-2015. Giants would put up alot of points, but always falling short in the final minutes. 2016 also relied heavily on last minute heroics usually from Beckham or defense. This also started a trend for the Giants struggling to put up points, like over 30. Jerry Reese gets fired leaves the Giants in a bad spot. Gettleman is hired and honestly didn't do any better or worse than Reese did. Only difference Reese managed to oversee two years where they won a Super Bowl. Reese was kept instead of Coughlin who was the sacrificial lamb when in reality it should have been blown up.

In hindsight, maybe nothing would have transpired out of that season. And that picture had nothing to do with their performance vs Green Bay. Still, it wasn't necessarily about the picture, but about the message it sent: you've got a playoff game to play for the sake of advancing in order to eventually achieve the ultimate goal in your sport, the Super Bowl, and you guys are out partying? It sent the wrong message, that they weren't really locked in like you might have wanted. If they go out there and perform, nobody's saying anything, but the fact that they go out there and drop 2 TD passes, people are gonna point back to that picture, whether fair or not. It sucked because the defense had been playing lights out that year and you always felt you had a chance with Eli. And Eli came to play also that game. Yeah the offense sucked that year and they were 11-5 mainly off the strength of their defense, but Playoff Eli showed up. The rest of the team let him down. That game I remember also with the defense, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie went down and Trevin Wade stepped in, and he got fucking torched, and the defense wasn't the same after that. Which I guess would point to the larger problem of the team which would rear its ugly head for the next several years (not helped by some of Dave Gettleman's moves either lol): as good as their defense was, they had no quality depth. One injury and the defense performed terribly. You're only as strong as your weakest link I guess. But why did the Giants not have good depth? Because they couldn't draft well. Missed first rounders, not hitting on any mid round picks. Giants never really had super high draft picks after the Super Bowl because you had Eli and you had Coughlin, which was enough to keep the team right at the middle of the pack, so Reese wasn't necessarily getting guys who were "can't miss" at those spots. Then Reese goes out and spends like crazy in the offseason to cover up for his shit drafting record, and it ended up working for that one year, and those guys mainly stayed healthy too which helped. But the year after those guys came down to earth and now you're left with a bad team with players on terrible contracts that weren't performing up to standard. Which sent them in a downward spiral that they are now just starting to appear to hopefully come out of under the leadership of Brain Daboll and Joe Schoen. Hopefully those guys are in charge for a long time, can draft well and run this organization successfully
