One Punch Man is a show that puzzles and amazes me to no end. How can such a generic story, simple plot, shallow backstory and Invincible main character produce something new and amazing? Let's find out, because this masterpiece is truly one of a kind.
Kind of like when you play most JRPG's through to the end, you find that somehow, through the course of your journey, you have attained near god-like powers and can defeat any and all challenges that present themselves before you with ease. That's usually when the game starts to get... a little boring. At least for me.
Why is One Punch Man so Good? How One Punch Man Turned Bad Storytelling into a Masterpiece

One turned a lack of skill in drawing into one of the most amazing anime's in history. Just because: 1. He believed in his dream. 2. He did not care what other people thought. 3. He worked his ass off. Every. Single. Day. 4. He put his work out on display in public, for everyone to see. 5. He persisted despite bad reviews and criticism. 6. He took the offer for help from Murata. 7. He worked with his new friend and mentor tirelessly. 8. They put out the manga for all to see. Even for free. 9. Initial readers loved it and told their friends. 10. They made more great industry connections. Including Studio Madhouse. 11. The animators got inspired, and also worked tirelessly for low pay. 12. The project was not put out until everything was done perfectly and ideally. 13. The initial audience loved it and told all their friends about this awesome anime. I guess that's not a "just". Haha.

I think there are two mistakes in your list of events: 1.- One self-published the webcomic by himself before meeting Murata. 2.- The webcomic was obviously public, but the manga was published by Shueisha from the start- it wasn't distributed or shown for free anywhere before that.

Good stuff! It really is impressive is how the show removes the question of whether the hero is strong enough to beat any given bad guy immediately, but finds places for tension to exist regardless. You mentioned the internal conflict in Saitama, but there's also the external issue of the superhero organization. If they knew that Saitama was the strongest person on earth, they would be able to mobilize him first and save way more lives. Instead, they've set up a system where someone like Saitama can be overlooked because he doesn't give as many long-winded speeches about his power. If you want to get ahead in this business, it's more important to be arrogant and self-aggrandizing than competent. The show often functions as a workplace sitcom, and I have to imagine that One's office job was an influence.

And the thing is, he shouldn't have done as poorly on the intelligence test as he did. Sure, Saitama isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but the majority of the intelligence test was more about combat tactics and emergency response with questions like, "You're faced with this type of enemy in this situation. Describe how you'd deal with it." And his responses to any question like that was just, "I'd punch it." So it's also a social statement on the shortcomings of that kind of testing and how the results of tests are made to bear so much more weight than they actually should.

The reason OPM is so loved isn't mostly the reversal of expectation, it's that we can care about him because the anime goes out of its way to make him seem relatable. It shows him doing mundane tasks like buying groceries and eating with friends, which are scenes cut for more plot related stuff in most Hollywood movies. He gets self-conscious and the world treats him badly in an up close and personal way that makes us want to root for him. It's not like in batman or w/e when there's protests but actual people tell him to quit because he sucks and is a cheating bastard to his face.

If only plot holes and inconsistency were the only problems with SAO. It's not like the anime is based on a game that is pure shit and unbalanced nonsense. Really? A pvp game that gives 1 player in the whole game the ability to use Dual Wield swords and another gets perfect defense? Even if the characters and story line didn't go to shit, it is still based on a terrible premise. There are literal series of you tube videos explaining all of the problems with SAO S1.

yea the story of SAO went to utter shit once they broke out the game. but pretty sure the evil GM (forgot name) did specifically say that the dual wield only unlocked for the players with the highest reaction speed . does that mean the highest reaction speed in the whole game or is there a very high reaction speed a player can get to which then unlocks it. hopefully its the second one but you could well be correct.

Everyone misses the single thing that makes One Punch Man great. It's not just the subversion of expectation that it's so famous for. It's because Saitama's biggest struggle is to be appreciated. The public doesn't even know who he is and doesn't take him seriously. Nothing is a challenge for him EXCEPT for getting the recognition he deserves. THAT is what we, as an audience, empathizes with. THAT is why we still root for Saitama, even though he overcomes every physical obstacle with ease. We want to see him succeed, and not merely by punching everything he sees, but overcome the subtle nuances of SOCIAL life. At the end, we finally see him in a position where everyone else has failed, and now all eyes are supposedly on him to save the world. But the public probably still does not see this. It's ambiguous whether he gets any recognition at all after this fight, BUT... and this is the best part of the ending of One Punch Man-he at least got a challenge out of it all, and that's what matters. It's the little things we ought to appreciate; that's what this anime teaches us.

Here's the thing I don't like about superhero movies. No one walks into Black Panther thinking that T'chala might lose. No one thinks maybe Zod might beat Superman and destroy earth. People know how superheroes work. It ends with the hero winning. So don't treat you're audience like an idiot, and pretend that there might be a chance the hero could lose. That's why I love One Punch Man. Right from the start we are told he is the definitive best. No arbitrary power levels or second winds or winning with the power of friendship. He just wins, and every time he does, its the most satisfying thing to watch. I've watched the Deep Sea King fight dozens of times. He's so smug and arrogant, and then Saitama just one shots him, made even better by the fact that he can't be bothered to remember his name. I don't believe shows always need to have conflict to be entertaining, and I don't believe all conflict has to be about the possibility of failure.
@nonenone6704
@nonenone6704 5 жыл бұрын
I think you're both very right and very wrong. You're right that One Punch Man is more honest by admitting Saitama always wins. But you're wromng that shows need conflict, because One Punch Man does have a serious conflict... hut it's not the villains. It's Saitama learning to live with himself, to not be bored with being invincible, and for other heroes to recognize they can rely on him to save the day. It's a social conflict, not a physical one.
@MegaNightmare4
@MegaNightmare4 5 жыл бұрын
Alright, maybe need is the wrong word. I personally do not like conflict, of any kind. I don’t find it entertaining. To me, the most satisfying thing in a story is when a problem is resolved without any challenge or difficulty whatsoever. One Punch Man is my favorite show because Saitamas existence renders every other characters problems completely irrelevant. It is the closest a show can get without conflict. However, I know that almost no one is like me. People are interested in conflict. People get satisfaction from surmounting challenge. It’s the human condition. I wish there were more people like me so that there were more shows like that. Because every time a show takes even a second to pretend like everything might not be 100% ok I get bored.
@nonenone6704
@nonenone6704 5 жыл бұрын
So... you prefer comedy and slice of life I assume? Those are the only genres I can think of that don't neccesarily require conflict (though some have dramatic conflict). If you liked OPM for not forcing conflict and stakes on you, then I'm afraid you might not like OPM Season 2. Yes, Saitama is still invincible and bored, but it focuses on the other heroes struggling against villains. Hopefully it won't be too boring for you to watch.
@MegaNightmare4
@MegaNightmare4 5 жыл бұрын
I am a webcomic reader. And its true, almost all of season two focuses on other characters, and I didn't enjoy it as much. But it was all worth it for the finale. Garou as a villain, is very emblematic of everything I don't like in a story. He is the traditional protagonist. He struggles and grows and almost gets defeated, only to gain determination and come back stronger. He goes through the heroes journey, and it all becomes entirely meaningless when he goes up against Saitama. All of his struggle and growth, every challenge he faced instantly becomes a joke when he realizes he never had a chance. And it is so gratifying. Easily my favorite fight scene of any story. Stuff like that is what I want more of.
@nonenone6704
@nonenone6704 5 жыл бұрын
Oh, you loved the webcomic? Ah, I see what you mean, you prefer inevitable stories (that admit they're inevitable, not fake conflict like most shonen). I enjoyed the inevitability for the exact opposite reasons, I was rooting for Garou because I knew he would lose, and just wanted him to fight for as long as possible. Except for horror and the few tragedies out there, the hero always beats the villain, just to please the audience. Though I thought about: even if somehow Garou had won, he still would have lost. One plot armored hero still won in the end.... himself. I'm just a sucker for the philosophical meaning in stories, hence my love for Garou, and Saitama's simplicity utterly destroying whatever complicated ideology his opponent builds up. I can't wait to see his psychological deconstruction of Metal Knight, God, and Blast.

Define "popular". If I asked a random person on the street what one punch man was before the anime, I guarantee no one would know wtf I was talking about. If I asked them what it was before the MANGA, even less people would know what I was talking about. I don't think you understand how many people read serialized manga, even shounen jump series. It's only a few million even for shounen jump titles. For less popular manga in other magazines, the number is far less. Then you have to consider that this wasn't even published in a magazine, it was a web comic. I'm sure only a handful of people knew what it was. Murata got wind of it somehow and became a fan, but it was not anywhere close to the cultural zeitgeist that it is now.

The one thing I was hoping Dark Pixel Gaming would touch on in this video but didn't, was the way one punch man parodies bad storytelling in animes, using all the tropes that commonly appear. Still, a really interesting comparison to the current american blockbuster trend.

what is really important about that for me is that saitama is just as fed up with that shit as we the viewers. Like when he freaks out when Genos is trying to tell him his whole life story or then with almost all the bosses he gets super bored when they tell their incredibly long backstories and THAT is super relatable to me. And that is what I find outstanding about OPM. I do think the female character designs could use some diversity but well this is still anime in the end..

the best example is dragon ball, goku was always op, but in the original manga his power could'nt solve every problem because sometimes he didnt know who was the enemy, or the enemy had weapons/traps/hostages, later dragonball seasons just show the villain at the start and the reason gooku cant kill them is because they are stronger, they turned the solution to an OP main character be an even more OP villain that can only be beaten when the main character get even more OP, unlike jojo villains for example, that are hard to defeat because they can prevent the main character to even reach them the dragonball problem is even worse because the villains can just blow up earth, and kill the 10 strongest people in the universe at the same time forever (because there would not be any dragon balls) and they dont do this

One punch man have nothing to do with heroism. One punch man show the irony of Japanese society. In Japan, you can get a lower ranking in the company because your written test are poor although you get full score in your ability test. In Japan companies, there are lots of office politics and people joined different fractions to survive the office politics. The higher ranking will bully the lower ranking because they are insecure and feel that the lower ranking will rise up and take away their jobs. Another thing one punch man tried to show is that even though you have ability and talents. Nobody will recognize your ability and talents if you are not good looking.

A show that is truly one of a kind. I totally agree. OPM relates to so many real life scenarios that it easily connects and resonate with me. And The Hero Association really behaves like any big organisation in the world. So many incompetent guys doing things only for the applauds and recognition, not really wanting to do the right thing. So many guys stealing other's hard work and effort for their own credit. But, just like Saitama, there are many unsung heroes who really strive for the bigger purpose of the organisation and overall direction. Those who are true to their goals and purpose never waver, and thus, just like Saitama, are the strongest.

Yasuke Murata, who's the mangaka for eyeshield 21, is redrawing one punch man in his art style(IE story by ONE, drawings by Murata). The anime mostly shows Murata's drawings but sometimes shows ONEs style for comic effect. You need to read both mangas to get it.

Go watch/read Mob Psycho 100. One Punch Man tells a similar story in a package that's funnier, but MS100 is far more heartfelt and aims a little higher with an equal amount of drama and the best character writing of the two.
@Manganization
@Manganization 5 жыл бұрын
The only thing similar about Mob and OPM is that both characters are OP. The difference here is that Saitama doesn't have any need (or want) to develop character-wise and and definitely is at his peak of development power-wise, while Mob is trying to develop his character and his situation.

Eh while I haven’t read Mob Psycho 100, and have read OPM manga (not webcomic), I’ve seen both animes and don’t feel either is objectively better from an emotional or writing standpoint. They are very different in many ways and I think both have great characters. I actually so far like OPMs characters better but it’s admittedly not a fair comparison since I’ve consumed much more of its material.

@@Manganization this, mob is a story about a person trying to chase a dream despite life telling him how he should go another way and sharing his personal growth rather than the growth in his power. OPM however isn't that. There's no room for his strength to grow and his personality is basically static. He has no mentor, every chance for growth (learning martial arts, getting better at video games, or iunno getting a love interest) is either fruitless, he's uninterested, or it just doesn't happen. Kinda just repeated you I guess, but slightly expanded on what you said.

Just found this channel and subbed after listening to your Chrono Cross and Xenogears stuff. I agree with most of what you've but forward here, but ONE isn't a terrible artist, he draws OPM deliberately bad. That's not to say that he's hiding the same level of skill that Yusuke Murata, who does the redraw of OPM, has, but if you read Mob Psycho 100 you'll see that although it's simple that ONE's art is decent. Also if you haven't read or watched Mob Psycho 100 you really should, it's also very, very good.

Recent OPM is still drawn deliberately bad. Also, ONEs sense for composition is excellent, which makes his action sequences great to follow even with the simplistic art. He's got real skill, and not just in writing.
@ZanathKariashi
@ZanathKariashi 5 жыл бұрын
Not deliberately bad, he just doesn't try as hard, nor does any of his assistants help with touch ups like they do with Mob Psycho, since OPM (ONE) is just a personal project he does in his spare time when he feels like it. There's a few spots though where he does go all out on a full page spread and it looks great, but most of the general story panels he doesn't put too much effort in.

The thing with One Punch Man is he is also a parody of superheroes. In the show, there are real, actual superhumans that exists, yet all Saitama had to do was workout really hard and push himself beyond what he thought was possible for himself, doing a workout routine that was even described by other characters in the show as a normal workout routine, and he became exponentially more powerful than any of them, to the point that no one even believes he is as powerful as he really is, besides Genos of course. That's also part of the brilliance of the show. Saitama wasn't born "lucky," as in, he wasn't born a hero, he became one, and in doing so, became more of a hero than any other hero in the series. It's that level of inspiration that, if you work hard enough, you can overcome anything in your life and exceed even those that were "lucky."

Second season only confirmed a thought I had: Nobody has actual power fantasies, they only fantasize about the things that power grants them, mainly love, and in this case, justice. That's why the most thrilling moments are not when they focus on the frustrated fighter, but on the determined hero that doesn't stop doing what is right and is unrelenting in his convictions.

One Punch Man is one way to write Superman well. Edit: While I did have fun beating Skies of Arcadia at level 99, it was only as a way to have fun being overpowered for a bit. It wouldn't be fun to START at level 99. :End Edit. Also, Superman has been written terribly for decades. There is no focus on why he is a good person, the value of having an iconic person beyond normal limits who is still a good person, or the pressure on him because he is such a public figure. Which is why I recommend everybody watch Superman versus The Elite. It really shows why Superman is the way he is, and humanizes him much more than most recent media has.

"All-Star Superman", "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow", "What's so Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?" (adapted to Superman vs the Elite), "Superman: Red Son", "Kingdom Come", "Superman: Secret Identity" as well as some other stories featuring Supes aren't just good, they're pretty damned awesome. However it does seem that for the most part the best exploration of Superman has been in self-contained stories where his mortality was of main importance or the frailty of those he cares about was used to get to him. I think there was a line in "Birthright" that said that the his being bulletproof wasn't as great as some see it - that instead of him being at risk, it just meant that his invulnerability put those around him at risk of being victims of ricochets which kinda describes how his powerset can be taken and used to deconstruct his apparent invincibility. It's what the whole of the "Injustice" storyline is built on. I don't think Superman's a bad or even an unrelatable character - he's just paradoxically chained by his own mythos and popularity. Mind you, "What's so Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?" is actually canonical so writing a good story in continuity is not an impossible task - it's just really hard apparently

If you haven't read Metropolitan Man, I'd really recommend it. It's from the perspective of Lex Luthor most of the time, but there are some moments where you really get a feel for what it would be like being so powerful and having so many people rely on you. Plus you can kind of empathize with Lex's reasons for wanting Superman dead. All around a great read.
