Having underclothes eventually transforming into outerwear is a pretty cool part of fashion history. Similar to the Marlon Brando t-shirt deal, when corsets became popular in Goth subculture, they started to be worn as outerwear, and eventually became an outfit/statement piece themselves. Really cool that you did a video on fashion history!

In the "old days," people were less likely to have climate control. No ac minimal heat. So layers were absolutely necessary. Today, wearing just an under shirt is comfortable, because we go from house to car to office. Always comfortable.love your show it is a hilight of my weekend. 😊
@piccalillipit921110 ай бұрын
*ADDITIONAL INFO* the T Shirt took 2 separate paths of evolution, the one you mention and the American Navy stationed in Japan in the 1890's They saw the Kimomno as a "one-size-fits-all all" garment, at that time all Western garments were made to fit the wearer, so they made the "T Shirt" as a cost-cutting exercise and the "block pattern" was born [size S, M, L, XL]. These are looser fit and undergarments, but the guys started wearing them as outer garments when off duty. Strictly the loose fit T Shirt is a US Navy invention and the tight fit T Shirt is a Brando invention. But you have the US Nacy to thank for off the rack clothing never fitting properly - it was their idea.
@thepoopieshow10 ай бұрын
that's so interesting :----o ! u r my new favourite source for cool facts. and yeah since they removed the buttons, the undershirts were made out of a new cotton blend that was stretchable enough for u know putting on the tee over your head and idk why the navy had to f that up. bc it was brilliant, no need for any adjustments.

@@thepoopieshow My hobby is tailoring men's bespoke historical suits, so I read a lot of the period pattern drafting books and the history of the block pattern is mentioned in [I think] JP Thornton's 1900 book "Sectional Drafting". Im not a fashion historian but I dont think we have the machines for stretch fabric until the 1930's. FYI the reason women's sizes are 8, 10, 12, 14 etc is that is the number of inches you would draft the pattern to for a woman's jacket - you only draft 1/2 the body and duplicate it. Womens trousers and skirts are matched to the jacket and assumed. Mens jackets are 38, 40, 42, 44 - thats obviously the full size of the chest and the trousers are 32, 34, 36 which are the actual waist But "Vanity sizing" means these numbers are pure fiction now. If you want to look like you are rich, buy your clothes secondhand and have a seamstress alter them to fit you - rich people look rich cos their clothes fit, not because they cost a lot of money.

I find it interesting that dungarees have come to be associated with a kind of "neutral gendered" dress - at least in the anglosphere - where they were formally associated with men performing hard physical labour. It's mad how much clothes can be tied up in the performance of gender and also of sincerety such as what are considered acceptable "business clothes" (i.e. suit, collared shirt, skirt, tights etc.)
