I think it's interesting that the police find saving a dollar on cigarettes is more suspicious than changing the life insurance document to the person who took her home at the day of the murder.

Even though I agree with you that changing the life insurance beneficiary to the person who took her home on the day of the murder is extremely more suspicious than saving a dollar on cigarettes, due to the arrogance of the head detective in charge of the case, Ryan McCarrick and others involved in law enforcement, they never even considered that due to incompetence or depraved indifference to justice.

The lack of real investigation in this case was mind-blowing. I couldn't believe how investigators focused solely on the husband and ignored real evidence. I think he and the attorney should have gotten a lot more. I hope there is justice there in that prosecutor's office, including the judge who allowed this to happen by not allowing so much crucial evidence.

That's the reverse sexism thing at work as well. If you look even at contemporary newspaper accounts, when there is a criminal gang, the female members are often described as having cooperated under pressure, or having been coerced. Based on nothing but assumptions. With violent crime, men are even more likely to be considered the perpetrators and the 'brains' behind the act. Sociopathic women often use men to do their dirty work and they're often not caught. (I was thinking e.g. of the collar bomb case where a woman got one guy to build a bomb, to strap it around another to rob a bank, because she wanted to use the money to hire a killer to get rid of her father...)

I just heard all the details about this insane case for the first time. I have also been a listener and reader of true crime for several years and of all the bizarre stories I have heard; and all the incompetent, corrupt, obtuse police investigations I have heard about, this one is at the top of the list. Right up there with Stephanie Lazarus' murder of Sherri Rasmussen; John Gordon Abbott's murder of Valerie MacDonald (he's never been charged; hiding out in New Zealand;) and Philip Garrido's holding Jaycee Dugard captive right under the noses of the California Parole Board for 18 years. Really, after reading and hearing about so many of these cases, how can anyone have any faith at all in our broken justice system in the United States?

Pam put in an Alford plea in her charges relating to the murder of Louis Gumpenberger. She was sentenced to life in prison without parole. As for Betsy's case, the best that I could find stated that her trial has been suspended indefinitely because Pam's public defender died. She has pled not guilty to the charges for Betsy and the armed criminal action charge was dropped. In August 2022 Pam waived her right to a preliminary hearing and in OCtorber 2022 her trial was moved to Greene County in Missouri. I couldn't find anything else beyond that but if I do I'll add it in

But I was honestly relieved to hear those words come out his mouth “this is one of the poorest examples of investigative work that I have ever encountered” and that Wood is using it to launch an investigation into the police/attorneys who were involved in this.
