@@dr.nooshtopherballsackphd2930 True shooting doesn't take volume or degree of difficulty into account. Player A only catches and shoots, but does so at 60% true shooting. He's a complementary scorer. Player B actually creates his own shots as a first option, and his total TS% is 55%. However, he shot at a 63% TS% on pure catch-and-shoots if you isolate just that shot type. Player B is not only a better scorer, but probably a better pure shooter as well. He just has the added burden of having to create his own shot and take more difficult shots. As a result, you get nephews saying that Otto Porter is actually a better scorer than DeMar DeRozan because Porter had a TS% of 60.2% and DeRozan's TS% was only 55.5%. Ayton takes considerably easier shots than Luka, and never takes threes. It is simple. The leauge leaders in True Shooting Percentage are usually either big men who play like Ayton or gaurds who shoots an amazing percent from 3, like Curry (49 percent) Joe Harris (48) or Davis Bertans (49 percent). So basically, if you shoot a lot of threes (which doncic does) you are most likely not going to have an amazing true shooting percentage unless you are one of the leauge leaders in 3 point percentage

@thegeno4246 жыл бұрын
You can't necessarily say that, they both play the to most distinct roles from each other on the court. Drummond is asked to finish at the rim and clean up misses with put backs; Steph is a shooter and is asked to space the floor. The both are efficient, but efficient for the roles they play.

When a guy has a low field goal percentage, but is still credited for helping the team win, I immediately start looking for what else they did during the game. I look at their rebounding, passing, and defense. I also look at the point spread by quarter to see where they did most of their damage, 4th quarter in particular. If they fit the criteria of shooting poorly, but filled in at another capacity, then I see that they did their part to help the team win. If they shot poorly and they didn't do much in other areas such as passing, rebounding, defense or 4th quarter scoring, then I get the impression that someone else did the heavy lifting to help the team win.

Stats tell you what . They don’t tell you why. People quick to say harden only shoots 42%. True, he misses shots . But they don’t tell you why , harden is in a system where all 5 defenders know what’s gonna happen (isolation), and they all focused on him. 34 PTS 42% fg where everybody is focused on you is amazing

No, Harden has poor shot selection and plays for fouls.
@bobjake86326 жыл бұрын
Fg% is overrated. True shooting percentage is much more accurate. If player A took twelve shots but all threes and made 4 his fg 33%(4/12). If player B took twelve 12 shots but all 2s and made 6 his fg is 50% but they both scored 12. Therefore 33% from 3 = 50% from 2 and 40% from 3 = 60% from 2 and so on. Now also think about this if a good free throw shooter is fouled it is as good as a fg but it doesn't contribute to fg%. True shooting percentage puts all this math together to give a more accurate picture. Looking at the past few seasons Steph and KD have been among the top 10 in ts% in the league above many centers. James har_en was 18th in the NBA in ts% last season. In fact JH was more efficient than an Anthony Davis and Gianis last season.
@Kingstyles056 жыл бұрын
I don't like ts%. I feel that it ways threes and free-throws a little to heavy. Especially when the league still leaves players open to shoot threes because someone penetrates to the paint. Also because all foul calls are subjective to the referee. You have to put on a show to get calls these days and bugs get pushed around often with no calls now. If it gets adjusted I'm with it.
@mikejones15726 жыл бұрын
Fg% also doesn’t take into account shot difficulty. Some players just stand in the corner to space out the floor. It also doesn’t take into account shot creativity. You aren’t always going to have good looks, being able to create a shot when there may not be one is a valuable skill that creates a tougher/less efficient shot, but at times it’s necessary

field goal percentage doesn't factor in, is if the defense is being honest or not. that alone is an asset... golden state is a great team to judge by that. team has to be honest on defense when defending them (except draymond lol) which can help for offensive rebounds and cuts and a bunch of other shit they can do to help their defense.

Field goal percentage varies by the position you play. One thing I noticed is that Field Goal percentage twitter loves to go after shooting guards. Shooting guards are likely to shoot a lot and the shots are most likely taken further away from the basket. Hence why the best shooting guards have field goal percentages in the low to mid-40's. Big men typically take less shots than guards. Also the shots are more likely to be taken at or near the basket. Hence why big men are expected to have field goal percentages in the 50's.

People forget to take into account not just watching the games along w/ the stats. Also the position the player(s) in discussion plays, whether he is a Shooting guard or a center because position decides more of the types of shots they will take like for exp: a Center will more likely take shots closer to the rim vs a guard who would take perimeter shots/midrange/and the occasional drive here and there all the way to the cup. If you gonna compare FG% you should be comparing more to other players at the same position who take similar # of shots to get a more accurate pic of their impact. A Shooting guards % to a Centers % isn’t as fair a comparison b/c the center will most likely have a higher fg% due to being taller/bigger and taking easier shots closer to the rim. The analytics say shooting around 33% from 3 is around as effective as 50% from midrange. That’s another factor to take into account as well as what else they did outside of scoring.

This is how it always goes, anytime people use stats, it's literally cherry-picking. People will either use a stat to make certain people look better or worse. Same people who will complain about some stats being used against whoever (or whatever type of player) will turn around and take other stats out of context to try to push whatever agenda they want. Why are we comparing shooting splits of big men and point guards? Why are we looking at raw data without context? People are trying to use stats to replace the most important part of basbetball. Watching the game. The eye test. Unfortunately nobody can watch every game of every team nor can they apply the circumstances around each game. That's why it's important to use stats to supplement watching the game along with knowing the context. Not only are we pretending like everybody plays the same position but we act like players dont have different roles or do different things depending on their team need/health/availability. It's great that we have advanced metrics, but it will not stop people from using those stats to oush whatever narrative they want. We all value and overlook different aspectd of the game. Some people only care about scoring, while others put a big emphasis on defense or passing. I can understand why one of those "field goal twitter" types would take Lebron, Steph, KD, AD, or Giannis over Harden. I can also understand why people who loved kobe bryant would think Harden is the 2nd coming. What I won't do is act like a subjective look at certain stats is objective. There is no way stats will give you the conditions and background needed to make definitive statements, it's just a piece of thr puzzle.

Field goal percentage is one of the most important stats. It helps show quality of shot selection and decision making. But even though it’s one of the most important stats, it’s not the ONLY important stat. If a player’s field goal percentage is low, but they effect the game in other ways like defense and passing and the team still wins then that’s ok. But if the player’s main job is to score and they don’t do anything else for the team and their field goal percentage is low, then that’s bad. James Harden does a lot more on the court than Kobe, so James Harden can get away with a lower % than Kobe can.

Hussel stats also dont make it to the final results, just ask Al horford a player hows focus on winning and not scoring he can pass, rebound like hell and take 3s also he goes for it and bring it every night but averges 13 pts 7 ast 8 rebounds

What’s being ignored is the fact that James Harden holds the ball 18 seconds of the shot clock which means each stat the team has will also appear on your stats... it’s just like playing mycareer

Guys, if you need context, if you need to have "watched the game intensely" to understand the result both the simple and complicated formula, which formula would you the use to make your judgement?

True shooting percentage is also a garbage stat without context. It doesnt take into account the difficulty of shots made and it is extremely biased towards big men who dont shoot threes like Capela and Deandre Jordan.

Dion Waiters how about doing your best to avoid takin difficult shots, or idk, passing the ball. if i take bad shots in double coverage, then it says more about me than the validity of tFG%.
@gorandragic17286 жыл бұрын
@@100ovrbatmanbron7 Well, if you have the ball in your hands for a large period of time, (Kobe, AI, Westbrook) there are times where you have to force up a shot, whether that be at the end of the shotclock or gameclock. Also, when I mean difficulty of shots, i dont just mean jacking up bad threes. Answer me a question, which shot is easier, a wide open three or a wide open layup? Obviously the layup, but that doesn't mean the the three is a bad shot, it is just more difficult. Which shot is easier, a floater or dunk? Clearly a dunk, but is the floater a bad shot? No, but it is definitely more difficult.

Dion Waiters LeBron has the ball in his hands all the time and he never gets that excuse lol
@100ovrbatmanbron76 жыл бұрын
Dion Waiters also, floaters are generally used to in traffic, there’s no reason to use one with an open lane. i’m not saying it’s a bad shot, but if you take enough low percentage shots to drastically impact your FG%, then maybe better looks is the answer.
@gorandragic17286 жыл бұрын
@@100ovrbatmanbron7 It seems you just ignored everything i said. I just used a floater as an example, did you not get the point. My point was that there is a diffefenxe between a bad shot and a more difficult shot. Which shot is easier, a free throw line jumper or a baby post hook over someone much shorter than you? Obviously the hook, but is the midrange a bad shot? Hell no.

Well we also have to look at the amount of shots players took right. You could have shot 30 and made 12 and at first glance it’s bad but it isn’t horrible. Then you see players shooting high percentages and they only took 4-5 shots. You have to look at all aspects. In my opinion stats don’t mean anything in a win. You can shoot a high percentage, but if it didn’t equate to a win, then does it really matter?

This is my favorite of all your videos!! I’ve been saying this for years! Blame guys like Max Kellerman for people who over value fg%. The other day he was saying a player was having a bad 3 pt shooting year because this player was shooting “only” 35% from 3... Do people not know how to do math? 🤦🏻♂️ 33% from 3 = 50% from 2...

Possesion Efficiency is very very important, there's a 97% correlation between possesion efficiency and winning, but u don't get that from fg%, efficiency is important but fg% isn't efficiency

People are way too one dimensional with the whole field goal percentage stat. This is why casual fans don’t respect the greatness of Kobe. I’m no Kobe Bryant Stan or anything but i respect greatness when i see it. Too many people believe shooting and shooting percentage is the only thing that matters when looking at someone’s performance for a game or even for a career

Sucks cause stats can actually illustrate and highlight things that the eye test may fail at. People who ONLY use FG% don't know the difference between Kyle Korver shooting 44% and DJordan shooting 67%

I wouldn't say eFG or TS% determines a player's impact but I get what you're saying. Also, Jason Terry could've won Finals MVP, there is an argument for that
