I grew up in Bolton and can relate to this. Speaking in very short sentences using gestures probably comes from the days of the cotton mills where the machines were too noisy to have a normal conversation. The workers developed a way of talking to each other using exaggerated lip movements, short sentences and gestures to make their point over the din. This seems to have lived on long after the cotton mills have gone.

Yep that's true I'm 76 and can remember many of the older generation that had worked in the cotton mills could lip read as they used to mouth their words over the din of the looms. Les Dawson and Sissy was good example in their fun sketches.

Strange thing. I'm American and English on my mother's side ( her mother was from London and came to the U.S.A. around 1914 - 15 ), but I have the same "Bolton" compulsion to talk with my hands. I actually find it really annoying and feel like an idiot doing it, but it's hard to stop. If I'm talking about a clothes dryer, I'll likely spin my hands around.
