I hope the officials and other residents of this place see this and that Yakutsk makes changes to embrace improvements to accessibility in their design and public transport. Disability can happen to anyone. Edit: I am an architect. There are too many talented and brilliant designers in this world for there to be any excuses. I grew up in Yakutsk and unfortunately it's not as simple as officials deciding to improve accessibility. One reason is that while the region is rich in natural resources and account for a significant portion of Russia's economy, the wealth is sucked up by Moscow. An independent Siberia is the best way to ensure investments like the one you're talking about would come about. It's never going to happen when the region is under the thumb of Western Russian cunts like Putin.

Here, the narrator portrayed this boy as an angel who inspires people. For what reason? Why does he leave home and live? If you don't understand where the error lies and you necessarily want the romantic narrative of disability then that is bad. You should understand that disabled people are not born or made to inspire others and make them feel lucky, you should watch Stella Young's TED EX to understand what kind of narrative is adopted with disabled people every time. The world sees us as poor puppies, or huge burdens, we serve to enrich fundraisers with sappy tunes, we serve to make you believe that you complain about everything while we fight to live like heroes..omg blablabla...we have normal lives and we do what we can with what we have. Help from others is invaluable and in that particular case it may not be possible to take measures to break down architectural barriers, but whoever made the video and narrated what was going on really did use the classic expressions that Stella Young would have called 'inspiration porn'.

I'm missing a leg and use either crutches, a prosthetic leg or a wheelchair, depending on a number of factors. If it's cold *here,* I opt to tough it out because wearing gloves means you lose some level of control for crutches and wheelchairs. Your grip just isn't as strong or accurate. This dude doesn't even have that option though lol. I'd move.

My niece has cerebral palsy but she lives in sunny southern California. We never think about all that we have to be thankful for until we see someone like Dima who has none of the conveniences that we have and yet he still remains positive.

Accessibility is a basic human right. I praise Dimas resilience and strenght, but it shouldn't be so difficult. I hope Yakutsk improve their accessibility, not just for Dimas but for all of us. Reduced mobility is an aspect of life that most humans will go trough with age, accidents or diseases. Yes, I called the police for help one time when I needed to make it to the corner of my block. The policeman was angry with me. He said that policemen have more important things to do. It's a more complicated conversation than in other countries though because of poverty, and permafrost. Your typical ramp could cause heat conduction issues and hydrolic ramps could cause frostbite if they get stuck or take too long.

Pushing that wheelchair must be exhausting. I have twins and we went through snowy streets just a few times in a stroller. The wet, salty snow sticks to the wheels like paper, creating clumps that make mobility already difficult. This man is very inspiring and he goes out every day in winter like this? Respect!

@@TheMiwachan Winter tires on strollers and wheelchairs help them to not lose as much control on ice and to tread over snow with more ease, but they do not stop the problem of snow sticking to your stuff and weighing you down to an exhausting degree! The cold also makes you feel very lethargic and tired extremely fast! I say this as someone who lives in a very cold northern climate

After watching this and reading the comments about accessibility, I hope everyone doesn't forget about the critical importance of social services, as well. At some point, his grandparents won't be around, and as they move into their mid and late twenties, the friends are likely to start families and have competing obligations. Social services are critical in situations like this to ensure people with disabilities don't become stranded.

For his wheel chair, a break can be put on like an anchor that swings down from a lever to dig into the snow or ice to help stop his wheel chair. A similar device are used on dog sleds.

I'm always shocked at how often buses in other countries are not low enough to be accessible. I live in Canada and all the buses I've been on are low enough that even elderly and injured people can get on, and the buses often "kneel" or lower down slightly to allow wheelchairs and strollers easier access. I'm so grateful to live somewhere that has some accessible design, and it saddens me to see how inaccessible this area is in comparison. I dated a man with cerebral palsy and he was a musician too! He had such a wonderful optimism.

Hi. I live in Estonia. probably you know that we were occupied by the Soviet Union as well. Still, we have completely changed everything in our country since getting out of that shithole and we have complete accessibility to all buildings and transport. Our laws also require it. The only exception being mediaeval building sin the Old Towns that have to be kept as they were. If building a lift or something means changing the structure of the building that cannot be done. Towers that have enough room have been equipped with elevators also. It is a common thing in former Soviet Union that disabled people have no accessibility, and they use really old public transport. It is really sad that after more than 30 years so much has remained completely the same, in mentality and values as well. They even speak Russian, for god"s sake. Why? They do have their own language, why have they abandoned it? In Estonia generations born after Soviet collapse do not even learn Russian anymore, neither generations born in the ending years of the empire. I am really happy that we have managed to build a completely different society in every way, physically and mentally. Very sad that most of the places there have not

My husband uses a wheelchair, we find that the "Freewheel" helps a LOT with snow because it lifts the small front wheels off the ground and turn his chair into a tricycle. We use it for hard trails and for snow. It might help this young man move easier in the snow!

I liked this video a lot. I'm disabled and sometimes I get stuck in winter, even though we don't have much snow in Zurich. A few years ago, I had to stay at home for three days in December because the sidewalk was full of snow.Dima and his grandparents are really great. I wish Dima success in his music project. It's not possible to make a crowdfunding to buy a stairlift, so it's more easy to leave the house?
