The legend of Galactus is perhaps the most well known myth throughout the vastness of the Marvel cosmos. Reports detail a colossal world ender who was once a regular mortal in an era long before our own. Technically, he is the most ancient thing in the universe, and his power is unrivaled. When he sets his sights upon your planet, the battle is already lost. He will arrive from the stars and dismantle your entire biosphere for sustenance, absorbing the surrounding layers of rock and atmosphere afterwards like a glutton licking his plate. He acts with impunity- without order, reason, or biases- but could there be more than meets the eye when it comes to this tale of cosmic destruction? What's the real reason behind it all? What exactly is it that drives Galactus to keep on living? What would it take to kill him? And what might be the consequences of such a drastic decision? You might be surprised. For example, on Earth in 1616, he is a bunch of beetles created by an alien civilization That is, this is a more conceptual level, the fact that in 616 he is the herald of another black does not negate the fact that he is the embodiment of hunger and he has a purpose

There's Elder Gods, Celestials, grown up Franklin Richards, Phoenix Force Hosts, Infinity Gauntlet users, Eternity (the personification of the universe itself), Lord Order and Lady Chaos, Death, etc. The point is, there's a lot of cosmic deities who are above Galactus in the cosmic universal totem pole. Again, that's only talking about characters who are stronger than Galactus on the universal scale. There's of course characters like the Living Tribunal and the One Above All who are infinitely stronger than all of the aforementioned characters combined.

I think this is one of those villains that you just have to take with a bucket of salt. Feeding on a planet is very inefficient, compared to stars, evolutionarily speaking. So the amount of power in- and out isn’t even the strangest thing.

I'll repeat my post here which explains this question: The bottom line is Galactus always limits himself . He prolongs his existence by doing so. Only 'The One Above All' has a higher purpose than Galactus. Galactus' function : 1) To consume the entirety of the multiverse (including his other multiversal selves). 2) die 3) Release energies upon death to cause the birth of a new multiverse and a new Galactus to form (usually an entity from the previous multiverse). 4) Repeat this function throughout eternity.
