The rule isn’t for show boating or flaunting your stuff. The rule is there so you don’t break accidentally break the backboard on a dunk during dead ball. If that does happen, you can’t play anymore and have to find another gym or replace the entire goal. Either way, it’s a stupid long delay. It’s like that for dead ball and not live ball because dead ball, everything can be avoided. Live ball, not so much. In other words, dead ball actions are all preventable and live ball is not so much preventable.

@brucemercer77536 жыл бұрын
@@donaldking2563 It wasn't a dumb rule. It was just dumb they didn't get rid of it sooner. Today's rims are designed NOT to BEND or Break or Shatter the Backboard. But when they wrote the rule the Rims were literally just a metal hoop attached to a thin piece of metal anchored to Fiberglass. They were EASY to bend and destroy... look at any basketball court in the 70's in a rough neighborhood and you find a bent or broken off rim. As a kid I don't know how many times we went to the nearest Park to play basketball only find there were no rims intact. We have to play with just a bent Metal Backboard. And the Fiberglass... when it shattered it could do enough damage that you could lose your ARM or be BLINDED. Back then NOBODY hung on the Rim because it was freaking DANGEROUS. They put several years Research into making Rims and Backboards that are designed to take the kind of abuse the Goal can take today. But you only tend to find those Goals in College and the Pros and maybe some very well funded High Schools.

It is a valid thing for high school games. It can definitely be intimidating. When I was younger I wasn’t incredibly good, but I could jump and dunk. In the military I was in a basketball league on-post. Despite not even being one of the 3 best scorers, I started every single game getting doubled just because I was dunking in pregame. I couldn’t shoot, I couldn’t really dribble well, and I was never playing as a slashing wing who was going to Russel Westbrook past you and throw it down. But them seeing the 6’1 white kid dunk made them believe I was the primary scorer. Worked out for us I guess

There was an NCAA rule that banned dunking in game because of Kareem (or Lou Alcindor at the time) between '67 & '77. The famous story is that David Thompson (NC State) in his final home game in '75 threw down a huge dunk on a break away & got a technical but the crowd loved it
@JStarStar00 Жыл бұрын
Many players would score on illegal dunks in the years 67-76. Some were unintentional -- guys would try to shoot layups and accidentally get their hand on top of the ball -- but sometimes it was fully intentional, the guys would throw down monster dunks.

In football, a lot of matches every season don't start with a 0-0 score. In the Champions League and Europa league, the knockout rounds are two matches each, playing at each of the teams' home stadiums. So in the second leg of the semi-final, for example, you can end up starting the game like 3-0 ahead of the other team. Also in those ties, away goals count for _more_ points than regular goals, except they're not actually displayed on the score at the top left of the screen. It only matters when there's a tie. Say one team won their home leg of the match 2-1, but then in the second tie that's away, the other team wins 1-0. The score may say 2-2 overall for both games, but the team with the most away goals wins, meaning the other team wins, because they had one away goal in the first match, while the first team scored both their goals at home. So no extra time or penalties, the other team just wins, and that's that. Leads to some odd situations sometimes where one team is losing the match but they don't attack at all, they just park the bus and try not to let the other team score any goals, because that way they can get through on away goals alone. They're some of the most entertaining matches funnily enough

Both teams came out of the locker rooms and warmed-up for a little bit. During the layup lines, one of the guys on the other team did a dunk. My local team's coach called him out to the refs. There was a 15-minute conversation between the refs, the coaches, and the scorekeepers to figure out what to do. I was that guy my freshman year, varsity semi-finals, CIF. The ref came thru the gym door just as I threw down. We started down 1, and yes, I hardly played that season like the guy in this story. That was an awful feeling. But we won, and I lived.

This is a rule in high school in Nebraska. Had this happen with a JV game in school back in 2000. Other team got two free throws before the game when one of my teammates dunked and I think we still won so no big deal.

can you imagine showing up to a basketball game 10 minutes pregame and there's already points on the board?
@DLKnightstick19895 жыл бұрын
That isn't how it works... The teams would continue warmups until just before tipoff, then the opposing team chooses a player to take the technical free throws, followed by the tip immediately after.
@johndavey77785 жыл бұрын
in most states it’s still a tech. you can dunk in warmups when the refs aren’t in the gym but when they walk in they all blow their whistles really loudly to let players know to stop dunking.
@prestonhigginbotham5 жыл бұрын
Lmao one of my teammates did this a couple minutes before the 20min warmup in HS so the other team thought they could do it. Then as the timer started they tried it and got a tech but we didn’t

It was my birthday just yesterday and I put off watching this video until today. Would've been a nice coincidence. Still thanks.

How did that dude with the backwards hat replace his arms with toothpicks?

"Is he the star of the team?" was implicitly answered when dude on the left referred to the player as a walk on sophomore.

Junior year of high school. Varsity player brought his home jersey to an away game. Coach sends the team back to locker room, they put on jv jerseys. The book had already been given to the scorers table. Coach had to remove the book, then change every players number. By rule, we should had been assessed 11 Ts. The opposing coach, officials, and our coach got together and decided 11Ts before starting the game was excessive and unfair. So, they decided on 2 Ts. Start of game was 4-0 before tipoff but could have been 22-0.

A kid here in Montana a while back was playing high school basketball, and it was illegal to dunk pregame as well, but he broke the back board and had to pay for it. But Oreo dunkers or some kind of snack named dunkers paid for the back board and gave the kid a year supply of dunkers.

You missed when it happened in the Villanova vs N Carolina national championship game. Villanova got 2 points before the tip and then hit a 3 at the final buzzer to win when it was originally tied

They used to call that rule in my highschool division. I dunked during a pregame warmup and got a technical, and my dad almost had a heart attack in the bleachers because of it.
@ah70275 жыл бұрын
ya our coach wouldn't let anyone attempt to dunk even in practice. If he saw you taking half court shots or dunking you ran the first part of practice. This is a case of just because you can do something doesn't mean you should lol. I don't really find dunks all that impressive anyways especially when the person doing it is over 6 foot tall. Bit more impressive if someone under 5'10" does it though.
