This doc is great, I don't know what people's problem is. If you actually watch the vid it's very obvious they're not saying that any drug use 'is gay'- and it's a fascinating look into the diverse different reasons for drug use in the lgbtqia+ community, the commonalities of experience between drug use and being queer, and the historical ties between drugs and the queer community. People are so affronted whenever anything is explicitly and unapologetically queer- whether you like it or not, our history and our culture is vital and important and deserving of discussion and analysis. So stop being so butthurt and either listen with an open mind or gtfo, this isn't for you

I’m gay but I don’t understand the glorification of gay drug use as though it’s amazing because it is subversive. It is incideous and causes a lot of damage to those that get hooked. I have seen a number of good looking young guys either die or addle their brains real bad. One guy I kinda knew (friend of a friend) was the hottest guy in town in his 20s hanging with the in crowd and doing party drugs and by his 40s he had become so thin and grey looking while talking nonsense and sitting by the bar by himself with no friends. I didn’t recognise him until a friend told me who it was. I was shocked and saddened to see such a promising life thrown away.

I don't doubt that "trauma, rejection, stigmatization" so on, have been one factor in SOME gay men using drugs so often. But we have to start being honest with ourselves and realize, that MANY gay men just use drugs because we seem to love being "free and promiscuous". Using the "stigma" line as an excuse isn't gonna help gay men regain some MUCH NEEDED self respect to start being a little more respectful to themselves and other gay men. The time for "we have to be careful how we word things" has passed. We're never going to be seen as a respected part of society if we can't respect ourselves and other gay men.

@thebeatles102998 Жыл бұрын
It's also worth noting this is not a "queer" issue, this is by and large an issue for gay and bisexual men and trans women. Bisexual and lesbian women are also stigmatized but we do not engage in drugs like "poppers" or molly or other party drugs. This is a largely male issue.

It should be noted that the nature of opression of gays and lesbians is largely different. The main "crime" of lesbians in the eyes of homophobes is that they don't want to f*ck men, while the main "crime" of gays in the eyes of homophobes is that they do want to f*ck men. Gay sex is way more stigmatized than lesbian sex, so I absolutely can see why gays would be tempted by those destructive drugs more than lesbians are.

Virtually every gay guy I know is a casual drug user and very few of them have a truly problematic relationship with drugs. That said, some have had close calls with GHB and a friend of a friend died of it. Most gay men really are more hedonistic than straights, and that's not simply because of "trauma." I actually think that its something to celebrate--we just need to minimize the risk that can come from sex and drugs.

Yeah this video is very strange. If someone didn’t know someone LGBT they would think the whole community are all drug addicts. I don't think that's true at all. There IS a higher prevalence of drug use among them, and that can't be denied. He simply explained why that is, and how it isn't just 'oh gay folks are degenerates and don't care about the law' nor is it 'oh they must all be depressed and using it to cope.' Nah, it's more because they are open-minded and more about finding ways to express themselves and so many more of them are willing to give mind altering substances a try for that reason. I think it's a good thing to explain that, because if you don't know gay folks you ALREADY probably have a perception that they're all on drugs and that it's for the reasons I just stated.

@@ItsJustMe0585 one thing is what YOU want to believe and another thing is the truth. When you say “them” I can guess that you can offer the amount of people that you have interviewed to see the truth behind your narrative. I’m queer, all my people around belong to the queer community and all of them are anti drugs. Most of the straight teenagers in Europe that I know (and I know a lot of them )do drugs (marihuana, pills, etc) so of course the narrative in this video is totally homophobic. You have to show number, contrasted information, not just rumours and sh1t that homophobic people want to believe about us.

People are commenting "I miss the old Vice" or "Peak Vice moment" and I feel they've been doing so ever since I first started watching Vice in the early 2010's. Wow. So disappointing. The way this interview almost glorified drug use and didn’t even touch on the topic of addiction. Not every drug user will become an addict but the risk is there and absolutely life ruining. Yes people of all walks of life use drugs for all different reasons but it doesn’t mean we should ignore the harm associated with drug use, all drug use including alcohol nicotine etc.

But addiction impacts a minority of users. Most drug users are recreational and not addicted. This is a myth we have to get past! Why should addiction always dominate discussions of drugs when it doesn’t represent the majority? There are plenty of docs on YT about addiction.
@bubblegummy12
@bubblegummy12 2 жыл бұрын
@@gee_emm I agree with you on that point. A lot of drugs are also not as addictive as others. When it comes to methamphetamine, opioids (I don’t think they were mentioned in this vid though) the risk of becoming addicted is highly more likely than something like poppers or mdma when used safely. I’m biased because I’m a recovering addict, I became addicted to painkillers prescribed by a doctor for a legitimate condition before there was a lot of education on the opioid crisis (in Australia ). I think any content discussing drug use should cover addiction even if it isn’t the main focus of the video. That’s just my personal opinion though.
@gee_emm
@gee_emm 2 жыл бұрын
@@bubblegummy12 I get your point. Have you read ‘high times’ by Dr Carl Hart? Apparently, it’s a myth that more people get addicted to meth and heroine. Shocking, I know. But he actually crunched the numbers. There are plenty of people who take these drugs only at the weekend. Reading that really blew my mind, as I always thought you took those drugs once and it was all over. Hope I didn’t sound unkind or dismissive. I know opioid addiction is real and impacts people horribly. This is why most users stay in the closet. Nobody wants that image. Anyways, good for you for recovering. Just remember that your experience is not the whole story. We have this slant when it comes to illicit drugs, but alcohol gets advertised on TV! It’s out of balance. Remember the ‘refer madness’ era and the ‘LSD will make you jump off a building’ days? 🙄We need to better informed, not scare mongered and lied to. Stay healthy! 🙏🏿 ✌🏿❤️

I didn’t even watch this. I’m aware of the culture but I’ve always assumed that it stems from the fact that people that are born gay, they will lack the connections that straight people have when they are younger and through their entire lives or they have had in general. And I realize that’s a gross generalization. But that’s what addiction is, it’s a lack of connection. I’ve been there and done that. Dr. Gábor Máté says that addiction is just people trying to adapt to a sick world. And I think if queer people do use more drugs, it’s because they have so much more to deal with internally and externally no matter how much support you have it’s not the same. I hope that made sense, I really wanted to say some thing because I have to be right on the Internet! Or really just because I feel deeply that this is bullshit but I am no expert.

I say prohibition doesn't solve drug problems. There have been experiments that all ended in the conclusion that you get very similar rates among countries that had drugs legalized and those that hadn't. If drugs are legalized, their consistency and quality can be easily determined and controlled, so the substances themselves are less toxic. Drug-related emergencies would be less frequent and probably also less severe. How the human mind works also would influence drug usage. If they were legal, they would no longer be so controversial and would cease to "be a big deal", because people get to experience both the ups and downs with less danger and less of an adrenaline rush that using illegal stuff often causes. That being said, snorting up half a ton of crystal every single day also doesn't solve drug problems. Responsible drug use would be the best answer and for that, people really do need good mental health and clarity. I can say from personal experience that using small amounts of drugs in a responsible way (including knowing your limits and setting boundaries) is amazing. It helps to easily get out of the ugly world we live in for a while, plus also helps with fatigue and practically eliminates anxiety with the added benefit of feeling happy and full of energy. Some of them also make it easier to connect with people, be more open, honest and makes it easier to show genuine empathy.
