These 30 people have never met. By the days end, they may wish they never had. For one long day they'll be at the mercy of The Bitch, a retired American teacher. Some would say she calls herself this way for good reason.
For 40 years Jane Elliott (A Class Divided) has been running an exercise that has ignited controversy around the world. She says it lays bare the hidden truth about racism in white societies. Many disagree, some vehemently. Now she's bringing her extreme methods and message to modern Britain. She's about to divide this group. Her aim: Simulate a racist apartheid style regime.
Will the British people accept her regime or stand up to it? Does it reveal that we're all more racist than we'd like to admit? How Racist Are You? is a documentary investigating one of the most taboo subjects in society.

KittyCraft You still used the word “bully” in your response. Bullying the other group is not the experiment in it’s entirety, but it plays a huge part in the trial. Her tactics are to bully people for an attribute that they cannot change. The experiment is to teach people about how the people in power influence structural discrimination.

I think most of the commenters here are American, and don't really get British culture - and nor does Jane Elliott. She has this belief that if you're kind and respectful, people won't listen and they'll walk all over you, but that's a really Trump like attitude. Brits will tend to be friendly and welcoming to people who have a polite, friendly approach...but somebody with that sort of fascistic demeanour about them is bound to invoke hostility and lack of co-operation. There are shades of Hitler about it (notwithstanding that she's actually Jewish). It's a point of honour that you don't let that sort of authoritarian dominate. Ever. So that exercise was never going to be about anything other than people sabotaging Jane Elliot's attempts to control them with her authoritarian manner.

Personally, I don’t think that this experiment works well for the UK, as opposed to the USA. This is mainly because most of the issues revolving around race are generally quite subtle, or an implicit bias. Being from the UK, I can say that the vast majority of racists are never (or at most rarely) explicitly racist, and many don’t even realise that they are. This is why the experiment failed here. From what I can tell, racism in the USA is a lot more direct and intentional, and Jane Elliot took this approach here. The blue-eyed people weren’t co-operative because from what they could observe, there is little racism in the UK. This is obviously not true, but since this is their perspective, you would have to approach the experiment in a vastly different way to what Jane Elliot did. While many of the people here were ignorant, in my opinion, it’s Jane Elliot’s fault this experiment failed for handling it so poorly.

kolaida You completely missed her point, which was that everyone has to conform (they were explicitly discussing conformity) to society in certain ways. A part of what is called 'racism' is based on the notion that there is something called 'white society' to which non whites have to conform. It's not white society, it's just society: everyone's a part of it and everyone has to conform; no-one fits in perfectly, all the time, or can do what they want.

@ottoweininger8156
@ottoweininger8156 6 жыл бұрын
Anisa Ali Try and think this through: Is there one 'white society'? Do you find the same 'white society' in Russia as you do in Italy, for example? Do you find the same 'white society' in a poor run-down factory town in middle America as you do in Los Angeles or New York? Do you find the same 'white society' in a rich part of New York as you do in a poor part? Can a poor white person fit in at a prestigious gala as well as a rich person who has attended many similar events? So 'white society' has many different layers, takes many different guises, and white people are of many different kinds. Who chose the rules of society anyway? Did some group of white people get together and say 'people must dress like this, conduct themselves in such and such a way' or did these conventions evolve over decades and centuries with no-one dictating them? And in what way are all non-white people the same? Is the culture the same in Tunisia as it is in China? Is a Zimbabwean immigrant the same as a naturalised African American? Wherever you are there is a mainstream culture and there are subcultures, and we all have to navigate them whatever we look like, whatever our upbringing. Doesn't matter what race you are, your boss and your teachers are going to tell you how to dress and how to behave, and you can't wear just a bikini into church.

Otto Weininger okay well the way that the lady was stating her comparison was that if her ex husband showed up to pick up his daughter looking non-presentable, that he and his daughter, would be judged. then she continued to say that if he looked presentable and “conformed to society” that he would not be judged. in the case for the black man, he and his daughter will be judged if he shows up because he’s black. if this is supposed to be a comparison, what is the mans other option? in the case of this, the lady’s ex husband has a choice of how he wants to be perceived, by looking presentable. the black man does not have a choice at all.
@lillylay4273
@lillylay4273 6 жыл бұрын
Otto Weininger You are being ignorant right now by saying that having to change clothes to fit into society and being discriminated for ur skin color (something you were born with and can not change) are the same. I do not believe that all white people are racist but if you have never been the minority in a country, that means you don't know how it truly feels like to be discriminated against, and in most cases wont recognize the issue or care. Because these people are in the UK, a place where white people are not the minority, the lady wanted to show them how it feels to be discriminated against for something they can not change, in this case their eye color. Some of the people in the experiment will be racist and some not, but the experiment is supposed to help both the racists and non racists realize what the minorities are going through, and hopefully want to help make change.

I think some people here may be dangerously missing the point of this experiment. She wasn't trying to educate the white people on racism. She was trying to show how easy it is to turn one group of people against another based on an arbitrary trait. Its important to remember that racism is a two way door. There is always the people who have the power to discriminate, and those who want to discriminate, and she's given them the ability to do so.

Yes, that was the aim of this experiment. But, that was not what this experiment showed but rather, it showed that white people (not all) are in denial of racism because they've never suffered through it, or to the extent of what the minority groups went through. So, people watching this video would expect the aim to be the difficulty in understanding racism when you're in the majority as it was clearly demonstrated (and mostly emphasised in this video) but not the ease of turning people against a particular thing, as the actions of the brown eyed people did not show that at all.

AKArainkit reverse racism is not a thing. you could never be racist to a white person. racism is so much more than just being mean to someone cause they’re black. racism is a system when white people benefit of the discrimination and oppression of the other group. black people and POC will never benefit from such a system. it doesn’t mean you should be “racist” to white people but it just isn’t a thing
@shayusu8317
@shayusu8317 6 жыл бұрын
Elsa Vianney Anduro As a minority. I'm extremely offended by what you just said. Yes reverse racism doesn't exist? Why? Because regardless of where it's coming it's just called racism. The "Oppression + power" or "Power + Privlage" The definition of racism govern by the fact there is a system that whites benefit from is a flawed definition that assumes class to be decided from race alone. Certain labels are then ascribed to these racial classes like "Privlaged" and the like, creating a racial divide thus being Racist it's self! Its also built on the false assumption that only white can be powerful. If a white male went to China and displayed Racist views towards the Chinese and was caught in discriminatory acts, would you say he's not Racist because he holds no societal or systemic power in China? Of course not! The guy is obviously Racist, and so would anyone else *Regardless of race* I refuse to see the logic in defining Racism based on race. That's outright paradoxical.
@vasaus
@vasaus 6 жыл бұрын
Elsa Vianney Anduro That's systematic racism, basic racism is the discrimination against a person for their skin. You cannot be systematically racist against a white person but you can be racist against a white person. As has been shown in certain Asian countries where they dress as white people and discriminate against any nonasian peoples including whites. People have conflated the two definitions and types of racism to mean th same thing when they dont.

The righteous white people were so much in denial, they did not want to even play along, because they knew better, they did not want to learn, because for them, there was nothing to learn. In all other countries people resisted but then conceded allowing for some learning to be had. In the UK, everybody was so "outraged" that the exercise didn't even happen as intended. "They had a better diet than industrial workers in the North at the same time. Slaves were very expensive, especially after the trade across the Atlantic had ended, and owners would be very careful not to waste them" The life of a slave was a cruel and harsh experience. Up to a third of Africans captured as slaves, died on the Middle Passage. Another third died on the plantations within a few months of arriving, because of new tropical diseases. Others died from sheer hard work. Professor David Dabydeen of Warwick University said It was a "nasty unimaginable way of treating people as goods, with no sense of humanity". Besides being underfed, illnesses were not properly treated and the dead were thrown overboard. Gastro-intestinal and skin infections were the most common diseases with scurvy. Twelve years a slave details the harsh reality of being a slave, written by Solomon Northup, a slave himself. Slaves that worked on plantations survived brutal beatings from their owners which resulted in deaths of many. The slaves were often starved, and if fed, were fed minimally and were undernourished. "Nobody stole anything, white people went and conquered and built a great country." American tends to whitewash their history, erasing the roles of black and Caribbean figures. For instance, Christopher Columbus didn't discover America. in the Sixth Century, Irish Monks had supposedly sailed to America. Furthermore, there's evidence to suggest a further settlement of tribes. in the 10th Century, The Vikings' early expeditions to North America are well documented and accepted as historical fact by most scholars. If anything, Columbus was quite late in discovering America as American had been documented beforehand. Another white historical figure is Thomas Edison. Thomas Edison is credited for having invented the light bulb and is praised as one of the fathers of modern day technology. However, In 1881, Latimer patented a method for making carbon filaments, allowing light bulbs to burn for hours instead of minutes. Moreover, Henry T Sampson, a black man, built the telephone. Almost every achievement of a white historical figure, an ethnic person did it first. We are all racist to some extent, including me as a black woman. We have all grown up in a system where the closest thing to whiteness is glorified and anything else is simply inferior. But we are all taught racism, and anything learned can be unlearned. I recommend reading literature from black people to provide perspective on the struggles of ethnic people. Checking out me history by John Agard is a good one.
@prammagunio9136
@prammagunio9136 6 жыл бұрын
You were talking about the lives of slaves during the Transatlantic slave trade and so I mentioned the middle passage which is a relevant topic. Research it. Furthermore, no one is trying to make white people feel guilty about their history; instead, it's important for America to recognise it's involvement with slavery and colonization that resulted in the innocent slaughtering of many tribes and people. Yet, this information is either trivialized or just not mentioned at all in America/Britain school system. By you trying to shift the focus to Arabs and their involvement in slavery, you are refusing to acknowledge your own dark history. Secondly, I didn't say Latimer invented the lightbulb, I mentioned his contribution to the lightbulb and science overall. My point is that the contribution of black and ethnic people, in for instance science, is disregarded and not taught- this is known as whitewashing. Latimer only represents a wider issue. Search up the contribution that ethnic and marginalized minorities have made in history in terms of medicine, civilisation and religion. A prime example of my point is a falsehood that Jesus is white when it's certain that Jesus was black. The whitewashing of Jesus ethnicity reinforces my earlier point which is that we all live within a system that glorifies whiteness and anything else is simply inferior. Lastly, yes it's common to prefer your own kind- this is known as a congregation. But as Jane Elliott shows, discriminating someone on something as arbitrary as skin pigmentation (racism) is pointless therefore is a social construct. In an ideal world, people would congregate not on the skin but on interest and personality and character. Please enlighten yourself by researching and learning through reliable sources and ethnic literature on racism, oppression, etc. Racism is learned, and everything learned can be unlearned. Again, read Checking Out My History.

The fact that they were mistreated was the entire point of the experiment and they failed and/or refused to recognize that people ARE indeed mistreated that way. They don't want to believe it exists or is necessary to be treated unjustly for the experiment because they have likely never experienced it for themselves. White privilege gives them the right to be ignorant and to deny the fact that they're ignorant. This isn't the first time white people have walked out in a huff during Elliot's experiment. 3. Even before they walked out they were negating, justifying, minimizing. Although the blonde woman didn't walk out she was probably the most privileged of all. If you can't recognize these blatant signs of white privilege, and try to deny that it IS white privilege, then I believe you've completely missed the point as well. Good evening.

@@plantiron Whites are the majority in America. Blacks are the second. Other races racism towards us doesn't affect us as much socially or economically as white people can. The caste system that taught those other races they were better than us was white made, that's why they are the focus. But blacks could hit those other races a lot harder if they stopped supporting their businesses. They're the ones with businesses in our neighborhoods, treating us like crap and still getting customers.

I think the woman was trying to say that she expected people of foreign cultures to adapt to English culture. Of course, that's a ridiculous request, it's not like her ancestors lived there for thousands of years. I mean, times are changing, it's the natives who have to adapt their culture to fit in with the newcomers. Comparing race to clothes was a dumb comparison but I think she references the whole cultural divide that is occuring within her country. She is starting to understand that her people are no longer welcome in the land they've been living in and it sets of a few primal alarmbells in her brain. Well, personally I don't really like the English anyway so I think they deserve everything they invited but I'm just trying to explain her reasoning to you. You can interpret that information any way you like.

I'm mixed and have darker skin, so I looked purely black,, and I always took the bus home in elementary school. Usually, I'd get off the bus and walk to my house by myself but, one day my (white) mom met me at the bus stop. I remember when the kids on the bus saw my mom, they immediately asked "Are you adopted?" Because I don't look like my mom. And on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we'd always learn about racism and black history. I was the only dark skinned person in my class and they'd all stare at me with looks of pity, they didn't talk to me and avoided me on that day. I've had many more occurrences, but these are just a few from my childhood. I don't know if this is subtle racism, but I just felt like i should share.

Notice how race wasn't a problem with your classmates until it was brought up as a problem by your teacher during history. Your classmates aren't racist for being uncomfortable with race-relations after hearing about everything their ancestors did, that's a normal human response to being blamed for something. It's also not racist to ask a child whether they are adopted, just insensitive. You could do the same with a white kid belonging to a black parent.

It's very telling that the school teacher didn't speak about her class having "a bunch of half-caste" children, or the little girl's cuts being pink instead of black, during the main discussions, in front of the black participants and Jane Elliott. She had sussed out who her friends were in her group, who thought like she did, and waited until a private moment with them before using those words. And then later says to the camera she always felt "passionate" about anti-racism and "didn't need converting". That isn't cluelessness or ignorance, it's calculated. She knows what to say publicly to deflect what she says privately, a way a lot of racism is carried out.

As a white blue eyed guy If i saw any racism I would act on that and protect the victim, but if I was being discriminated against I would also stick up for myself, I wouldnt accept to because she thinks white people are racist - that is racist in it's self! You can not claim to be against racism but then find it acceptable to be racist! And the whole idea that only black people experience racism is wrong. To suggest all black people experience racism is wrong.

TeamUK_Eurovision Of course racism isn't only for black people, I'm not black and I've experienced racism. but the fact that only black people mentioned anything about being subjected to racism says a lot really The point of the *exercise* was to let people who aren't normally subjected to this kind of treatment have a *glimpse* of what it feels like. How they responded was exactly the way that anyone would do, with anger. What's frustrating is that they didn't catch on and think "Oh, so this is what it must be like". Instead they tried to compare racism with being fat [22:58] and in one case, dressing poorly [32:29]
@MrSimmy92
@MrSimmy92 9 жыл бұрын
I would react the same! You do not teach racism is bad by being racist! Would you teach murder is wrong by murdering someone? Ofc not! If she had taken a group of racists then that is one thing, to take innocent people and degrade them like that is shocking! And there was a white man who was vocally in support and other members who didnt say anything at all. The reason people are comparing it to being fat etc was not to say that is as bad as racism but to make the point that they can sympathise and understand discrimination and by being subjected to racism was not fair! If i took part in that, i would walk in thinking racism is repugnant and i would have left feel the same way! Would have taught me nothing! How on earth do you find it acceptable to treat innocent people like that? And the most vocal black women in the group was laughing and enjoying inflicting pain! How fucked up? The whole mentality of "well ive gone through it so therefore so should you" is frankly abhorrent! If you have suffered racism you should not wish it upon anyone else. And I think it is more damming that a person in the group who had faced racism did not say do you know what this is wrong and there is never an excuse for racism, experiment or not! The women who did the investigation is racist because she is putting white people in this category of being racist. I assume you are from USA? This experiment was done in the UK, we do not have a racism problem like the USA, not anywhere near the same scale! The psychologists even said the reaction in USA and Australia were different because you are more segregated, we are a diverse mix in the UK and racism is not as big issue.

UFCNUTTA this is quite sad, as when you look at the reality, white supremacy and living in a post colonial era, it is very very rare that a white person suffers racism. When we talk about racism, 99.9% of it is about minority groups (BAME). So when you say such things, it just makes one think, and? What's your point. What about the 99.9% of the time. Or is the 0.1% issue more pertinent than the millions of examples of the 99.9% of racism issues? Your comment just shows you're self absorbed sorry to say and in denial about this issue.

Btw, even if she looks at people based on skin colors(which is not bad in some cases considering that's we all do) she needs to consider the fact that they're still people (human beings). If I fall and scrape myself, you will see my flesh (which is pink no matter the ethnicity ) and then I'll bleed. We all see color. For it is what makes us different and that can be a beautiful thing. If we we're all the same everything would be so boring. I happen to think variety is the way of life.

Hans S You are so ignorant I really don’t want to waste my time, but I do like to teach people morals and common sense. So here we go. Ok, yes crime is more prevalent in the black community. The whites set it up like that. You would be smart to say, “we don’t tell them to commit crimes against us”, which yes you don’t, but back in the day when slavery ended what did y’all do? You set them free and told them to join society. You gave them nothing. In America around the end of slavery there was an act in place (don’t remember it), where a Native American could receive up to so many acres for conforming to the white society. You guys gave land to people who rightfully owned if before y’all. You don’t see the stupidity in that? You brought over thousands of innocent souls from Africa, tortured, lynched, abused, and sold them all for your leisure. When Lincoln emancipated them, actually I want to emphasize on this. Fuck Lincoln, he simply emancipated the black people, which means to be freed from control. You guys let them free to exploit them. They wanted to vote? Poll taxes and literacy test to vote. To this day racism is still alive, but it lurks within the mind and does not express itself freely anymore. It’s more subtle now. Black people truly are the strongest race, they’ve been tormented for years on end and still keep going. They are the toughest physically, emotionally, mentally, educationally, anyway possible. I’m not black I’m part native/Mexican FYI. The reason so many black people commit crimes is due to the injustice they face everyday. When they are told before they even hit the age of 10, that they are criminals, n-words, dangerous, and ghetto, they believe it. They subconsciously fit the profile society gives them. It’s easy to realize your problem and come up with a quick solution. Target your oppressors, it’s easier to kill someone than to make them understand their racism and bigotry. You see things at a surface level. I do not know you, but based on your comments I can tell that you struggle with that as a person. Read into history, understand why they behave like they do. I promise you, if my ancestors were treated just as bad I would probably want to kill someone too. My ancestors were treated poorly, but not nearly as exploited as black people. If you’re white, use your privilege against this white society. Learn from history because it is being repeated. Racial tension is rising again, we are victim to history yet again. We don’t have a country of freedom, but a country of ignorance.
@guero1439
@guero1439 6 жыл бұрын
Hans S ahh, the racism shines right through. Again, you’re right they’re was slavery, but did you know they only kept them for 7 years in Africa? If a village enslaved another village they would keep them for 7 years and then let go because they would become friends w their masters. When they would return home they wouldn’t retaliate because they knew the villagers and cared about them. You guys basically told Africans that if they didn’t round up slaved for you, you’d basically take them. You can’t sit here and throw in facts that cater to your stupid plague of a race. You really out here letting everyone know you’re a racist shit. There’s a special place in for ignorance like yours. America.

Did anyone notice how quiet the people representing minority groups were throughout the whole experiment, even after they were told they were part of the group of privilege (brown eyes). They have been oppressed for so long that they couldn’t even pretend to be white for two hours, not because they didn’t want to but purely because they didn’t knowhow. Their silence alone speaks of their oppression. They have never known how to stand up for themselves without facing serious reproach and they couldn’t even do it for a fictional experiment that doesn’t have any repercussions. They couldn’t even pretend. Tragic.

Gabazi Nxumalo I’m non-white. For me, I couldn’t act “white” because of two reasons: 1) the experiment equates ALL white people to rude, in humane, arrogant, insufferable, pompous bullies. To “act white” you must be a bully. That’s is absolutely disgusting, that the brown eyes group jumped on board with that so quickly. The two white members of that group didn’t, not because they were unwilling, but because they were unwilling to treat people in a way that hurts them. I would’ve walked out too, or stayed around to make sure people sit start going crazy. It was truly scary how so many brown eyed people just sat there, after being told they were about to bully others, and could participate if they wanted. And they did. 2) What does this solve? An eye for an eye? That never works. Forgiveness and love does. If this lady got them all to discuss different stories of racism they had all experienced, then helped them forgive each other, there would be true progress, true healing. If at the end, they said to one another: I’m sorry Please forgive me I love you Thank you Those words would heal so much. It’s an old Hawaiian prayer, and those few words would have brought true healing, and real change into everyone here. When people say love is the answer, they mean it.

At first I thought this exercise put the blue eyed people in a no win situation, because the teacher has already made them all out to be racists, whether or not they say they don't like being treated badly on the basis of eye color, or not. As the program progressed, I realized this is the same position people of color are in all of the time. The white lady comparing her husband having to wear a suit to work, to a black man not being able to pick his daughter up from school, so the other children don't know she's black, really made me realize that those white people don't understand racism. And the white guy saying that a skinhead probably shouldn't turn up at his children's school either, it's ridiculous that anyone could think that's a good comparison.

Yup. It’s called systematic oppression. And that’s only 1 half. Because it becomes internal.

I thought that man's example of, "playing the game" and not picking up his daughter at school, was quite telling, and very enlightening. Some might say he's a loving father by protecting her identity, while others might say, you shouldn't hide who you are, or teach your daughter to hide hers. I'd say, they shouldn't feel the need to. And yet, they do. That is shameful. . .

yet they do feel the need to. That, in itself, is simply shameful. . .

She's right. I responded the same way as the blue eyes, at first, but when you watch them resist and protect the system and blame the victims, it's obvious. I don't feel guilty for being white, neither should anyone else, you were born with it and that's who you are. However, we need to admit that we are all racist to a degree. The only way to fix a problem is to admit their is one, and people with goodness in their heart, even if they're racist, can help change the system.

+Daniel Chapman ^THIS although i want to add on that you yourself as an individual are not racist, socially. the system itself is what's the main racist component and being white just means that the system gives you an edge. so systemically yes, "we are all racist to a degree." and i'm saying this as an asian/latino, because i still have a systemic edge over black people and that's just how the system is. i love that, in learning from this experiment, you've checked your privilege (yay!) and have come up with a solution on your own (double yay!). poc don';t want you to feel guilty about being white. we just want you to be aware of how messed up the system is, give us a platform to make the nation aware, and pledge to find a way to change the system internally. again much love, brother!

+Daniel Chapman The other thing, as a white person, is to admit that as a white person, you have a certain amount of privilege over other minorities. It's nothing your fault that you can change but admitting you have the privilege is important.

There's no indication of racism here, nor even of ignorance. This is nothing more than surprise. How is one to know what a scrape looks like on a black person's skin until one sees it? Let me tell you a story: An Asian woman and a Caucasian man fall in love. She is surprised to discover his pubic hair is the same color as the hair on his head. She had thought that everyone's pubic hair would be black. Is this racism? No, it is merely surprise.
