The number of reported cases of racial discrimination increased to more than 11-hundred in 2019. That's twice as many as four years ago. New figures released by Germany's anti-discrimination agency show the country is struggling to overcome problems with racism.
DW talks to Cultural and Scholar and decolonization advisor Peggy Piesche whether those numbers reflect the reality in Germany today.

I'm a brown man from Australia who moved to Germany with my German gf, we ended up moving back to Australia after 2 years. The move was a struggle from the day we landed. I could never get used to the rude cold people, the staring, the difficulty in apartment hunting, the endless paperwork and visiting different office departments to do simple things. As a mixed race couple we never had any issues in Australia but for some reason a lot of Germans seem to look down on people like us. Australia has a racist reputation but the racism we experienced in Germany was shocking, on a whole nother level and this was in the Rheine-Ruhr area, the most diverse. I honestly faced more racism in my 2 years in Germany than my entire life in Australia.
@biggiedii4889
@biggiedii4889 Жыл бұрын
@viperpit The paperwork and neverending appointments wasn't racism but it was just another thing that accumulated to how difficult life was there. In Australia bureaucratic dealings are done much faster and a lot more is done online which is so much easier. So much for German efficiency I guess. Some of the racism I experienced was Monkey noises from a group of teens, being accused of stealing in a store, being treated very differently to fairer skinned patrons at restaurants etc.

I think racism in Germany is very nuanced. People don't act hostile or aggressive towards you (except bureaucrats ). You are just excluded out of social gatherings, people won't let you their homes if you are person of color, you won't get a date easily, people won't talk to you at bar/club or god forsake if you sit near a German guy/girl in bus; they will make such a face as if you are non-human. On the other hand there are lot of other international students and you can befriend them easily and make life long friendships. Also there are some really nice Germans who are so well behaved, polite and empathetic that you will have a hard time believing that such people exists. I will never forget the kindness and caring behavior of my German teacher when I first came to Germany and didn't know much about German system. So all hope is not lost. Its important to stay positive and keep an open mind.

@@vishusharma8566 If people react badly when you sit too close than you did things wrong. Nobody in Germany sits too close. Pay attention! Germans don't do that either. Every culture has their standard of how much space they keep between people. Studies show that Germans feel most comfortable at 1,5 meters for strangers. So if you are German or not if you come off as creepy and being too close it is your fault and not the fault of the German.

I'm from the US but spent a lot of time in Germany (Bavaria). In my opinion Germany has more low key racism than the US, it's just that it doesn't get the same media coverage (often politically motivated media coverage in the US). At some point after hearing us talk he started playing while he looked at us and made the list of Italian politicians, with dozens of people watching us. There's quite a lot in some regions, even though some people claim the opposite. Even being caucasian and German lookalike I faced over the years similar experiences, even having a C1 in German. More recently a young lady from one of those over-burocratic offices claimed to do not understand was I was asking her, trying to mock me like I wasn't able to communicate in her mothertongue, just because she saw a foreign name/surname on my ID. It happened to me, as well to many other friends of mine living here. Surely you can face the same problems in every other country, but what I noticed in Germany is that some groups tend to consider us a step lower compared to them and easily accusable if something happens. I've several German friends, but many others like those people I described should reconsider the whole economic situation, as without us "Ausländer" their beloved country would be in bankrupt and without workers.

German approach to racial discrimination is "there are no race", which is a short walk from "there are no racism". This even transpires to rabid Institutional discrimination wherein the law itself is racist, and proving a case of racism is notoriously difficult, because the burden of proof is entirely on victim and NOT on authority or institution. Case of racism needs to be so explicit, that most of the real life cases of discrimination do not cross the threshold.
@Cleopatra1233
@Cleopatra1233 2 жыл бұрын
You are right they have made it difficult to prove racism cases. I saw that in UK as well. People who faced racism were told to show clearly if they were told something in relation to their race or nationality. That meant even they could be beaten up but if the aggressor didn’t insult them verbally or say something related to their race, that would not be racism.

No offense, I did not write this message to intentionally polarize the society here. But I face discrimination almost everywhere (let's not call it racism because discrimination happens in many various ways whereas racism has rather a definition that is limited to one aspect of life). At work, in school/private course settings, social life, government facilities. Germans are also cold and quite biased almost towards anyone who does not speak German or who is in the process of learning German afterwards. I am not a native English speaker but my proficiency level is high enough to challenge a person from academia and even if you achieve an equivalent level of competency in German, for some reason the minute a German understands that it is not your first language or notices your conceptual mistakes, they start behaving you as if you are underprivileged and even sometimes ignores your responses in matters where your input is essential for the continuation of a certain setting, their behavior makes you feel completely unwelcomed and oustered. At work, no matter your background, if you are not from them (German, I have seen an attitude of 'us versus them')- you are constantly detached from every intimate setting where colleagues or counterparts exchange different things with each other in their social engagements and professional agenda, so you are kept away from privileged exchanges and intimacy. Your opinions are not valued and regarded the same way a German's random opinion on a random topic is regarded or valued. So workplace can be sometimes very challenging. In college, high school, university, or private courses that have no relationship with professional education (such as Driving Course) life is even more challenging. Because the student identities gathered around in those settings have quite diverse ages, habits, doctrines from fsmily and backgrounds, and the way they treat other foreigners in those settings can be a very traumatic experience for many foreigners who are very 'naive' and are only focused on building up their individual life path in the setting they have been placed. Especially the moral values of the youth today are quite low, they have almost no decency and they always violate the borders of other elderly people's lives in some type of way especially when they are foreigners. The stereotypes associated with Germand such as being punctual, respectful and considerate are not valid anymore since these and many of other virtues have been abandoned. What is even worse is, when you utter the above matters, they stigmatize you as someone who is oversensitive and who exaggerates/provokes all cases. But I have been through some of the processes I typed above and have had friends who have experienced all of them. Trust me, dealing with the complexity of not being accepted to a place hits you differently everytime you go to bed and wake up to a different day because the things you live through unfortunately get drilled into your mind...

Bio is a label for food grown without pesticides or genetic manipulation in Germany. When someone says they're "biodeutsch" they mean german without migrational background. It's because this food is seen as pure and natural and the far right can't say "aryan" anymore because then their agenda would be to obvious.

Studies have repeatedly shown that ethnic diversity reduces social trust and cohesion. We don't know why. Is it evolutionary survival? We don't know. But we tend to hang around with, and trust people who are more like us than not. Sociology is wonderful. It is a legitimate science. But it needs to delve deeper in to the whys and wherefores of diminishing social cohesion in the midst of multi-ethnic states.

there’s a lot of variability in what people consider to be ‘racism’. A country’s history with racism is tied in with nationalism and the broader cultural context. This is why racism in America is completely incomparable to racism anywhere else. America dragged itself out of slavery and apartheid (interracial marriage was only officially legal everywhere in the country by 2000), while Germany has been building its image as a tolerent state for many years
