Sky News gains unprecedented access to the RAF pilots responsible for protecting Britain's skies from terrorist threats.
Ready to respond at a moment's notice, the Quick Reaction Alert crews based at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire, fly Eurofighter Typhoon jets.
They are armed with short and medium range missiles, and are ready to shoot down hostile aircraft as soon as they receive the command.

A clear set of actions has to occur before a shootdown is authorised Attempts must be made to contact the aircraft, if it fails to resound and continues on, Fighters are scrambled to intercept and, if possible to ascertain what is going on withthe aircraft. If the aircraft continues to fail to respond and/or ignores clear warnings from the the intercepting aircraft and/or ground control, then the intercepting fighters would be given the order and clearance to shoot the aircraft down.

I used to work at the larger version of the CRC (Control and Reporting Centre) shown in the video. Jets got scrambled a lot more often than you'd imagine; if it wasn't for the Russian long-range bombers probing our airspace it was in the early hours for commercial pilots falling asleep as they crossed from the continent into our airspace.

These guys are absolute heroes, the best of the best. Every time these amazing fighter planes and their brave pilots go up, they put their lives on the line for our safety. Most of the time it is all in a day's work for them, intercepting a passenger plane or other commercial aircraft where the pilot has forgotten to change bands and contact air traffic control, in this case the fighter will make contact and instruct the pilot that he needs to phone home, once contact is established, he flies off letting the jet go on it's way. They never know what they're going up to though, or if they're going to come back to the ground safely.

More propaganda, and that is all this is. I know my pernicious government all too well, and it has no moral backbone to do anything but shy away from conflict unless fired upon first. We have British naval ships that feed and water and giver cigarettes and a rest to Somali pirates before giving them safe passage home.

What if for some, or any reason, the plane in question Cannot, or is incapable of communicating to the RAF pilot over their comm system? Do the pilots of the intercepted plane resort to using visual cues, hand gestures? I realize this may sound like a dumb question, and maybe it is, but I'm just curious..

How many aircraft can we get up as an emergency response should a wing of fighters penetrate the airspace?
@bibbly1234
@bibbly1234 7 жыл бұрын
There's only a handful of jet's that'd be able to scramble quickly, however, we have 140 (ish) typhoons, so should our intelligence show that a foreign country was preparing to send multiple planes, they could be met. However, the Typhoon's aren't our only defences, we have 6 Type- 45 destroyers, which are the best anti-air destroyers in the world, as well as having our airspace covered by French SAM's. It's extremely unlikely that any hostile planes would be able to enter our airspace without being shot down, and if they did, they'd only get one shot at it, since if we were in a state of war we'd have a lot more jets ready to scramble.

YUKU It comes under the UK's rules of engagement. They're no longer a civilian if their aircraft is seen as a threat to national security. Think 9/11. As to how they'd shoot it down, likely pull back a few hundred metres and give a burst from the cannon, unless it was a far bigger aircraft in which case you'd fire an ASRAAM heat seeker. If it's still flying on fire and without at least one engine after that, then fire another and use the cannon. Try to sever a wing or destroy the tail.

This is awesome and all but I have one question: how does the intercepting aircraft know what frequency the other plane is on? I can see a bit of a problem if one plane is on frequency a and the other is on frequency b. Is there a frequent they turn to should something like this happen?
@LittleTinyPianist
@LittleTinyPianist 7 жыл бұрын
There's a standard emergency frequency all aircraft monitor when flying, as well as the active. That's where the aircraft will be hailed from when intercepted by the RAF. They'll also use other methods to try and get the aircraft's attention, like flying close, waving to passengers etc :)

There are lots of ways pilots can communicate with ATC. Last resort is an escort to the nearest runway and do a fly by indicating no comms. If the pilot doesn't follow that procedure, they will be shot down. Simple as.....

Back inthe day, if RAFG QRA kites scrambled. It was moments before the end of the world because we had hydrogen bombs on our's and they had the same. It was a one-way trip for the aircrew. And a little less sure for those left on the ground.

I would guess 5 to 8 mins from getting the word to being airborn the longest parts would be running to the aircraft and taxing the fighters can be started up with one switch of an button the pilot would be getting ready as the plane starts up and it takes less than 10 mins to be on target so not long

nothing would be shot down for not responding. The aircraft would have to show other signs of aggression such as diverting from approved flight paths, aggressive flight manoeuvres etc. Not responding to radio does not meet the criteria in rules of engagement.
@FrankyLon
@FrankyLon 7 жыл бұрын
There are serious rules for that and shot down is the last result, also the decision has to be made on the highest political level. The video skips over the escalation process, they just mention it. However, it can happen that they scramble jets, especially if the non responsive aircraft not squawking 7600 and it diverts from its flight plane for no obvious reasons. It happened to a cargo plane last year, the final warning was given but finally the plane landed safely.
