With us progressing well on into phase 1 of Season of Discovery I wanted to take a look back and see how the meta has shaped up so far. Which classes have really been the best so far and which ones are lagging behind?
We may not see this level 25 meta again for some time to come, so I think its worth getting a video out about how things really ended up being like on Season of Discovery.
Ofc new runes will come in phase 2 and may very well completely reshape how powerful different classes are, but we probably have about 3-4 weeks left of phase 1 and with how fast it is to level its never too late to get up to speed on a new class.

If they do want to change the meta at all from normal classic they badly need to nerf warriors. Seems just like classic era to me but with way less content. I expect at least 70% of players to leave by Feb, more than half already have. SOD seems like a pretty big flop its simply not able to keep hold of players.

Same. Man, I've been playing (and suffering thru) Shaman since I picked up the game 3 weeks after vanilla release. I am a lock main and in BFD I have two sets of gear, one is for shadow bolt volley for trash and then fire for bosses. I can do some serious dps on trash that way. Really fun

It's been the best version of WoW I've ever played, even if it isn't perfect. Mage first was great, and rogue was difficult but not too bad but warlock was a breeze. I was soloing dungeons to level by level 20. They all felt unique and more like how i imagined WoW would be as a kid when it was first coming out and I never got to play it.

Resto/H. Priest is also crazy which added to druid healers being so shocking. PoM and Wild Growth go so well together for getting a raid up after any aoe damage

Starsurge is infinitely easier for NE druids to get at level 1 or 10 than Tauren. Most Horde druids don't even try until their high teens or in the 20s.

A nice thing to have would be a QOL Rune (I'd guess Bracers) like changing the benediction to 30 minutes instead of 5, rogue poisons, etc. Nothing game defining, just quality of life.

Problem with shadow priest is that it was never viable spec in vanilla for pve, it needs more love from Bliizard and some specific runes to make it more playable or as they solved in TBC - they just made it really great support class with some dps, (mana battery, 15% inc shadow damage, and 5% inc overall received damage to target) plussome damage. But some changes must be done.

If there is one thing I wish for the next phase is that you actually have to be tank spec in order to tank, I want the bosses to hit hard like hell otherwise, so tank is not a dps like now. Bosses and trash shouldent hit like a wet noodle, you should need a designated tank healer that keeps the tank alive with single target healing. Right now protection or whatever is useless spec.

For Mages, Fire is actually best in Era from 1-30ish when talking about single target. Most mages stop questing at 24~, and start AoE farming, where Frost is obviously king, but Frost has always been a worse ST spec early on.

i know, but in classic in mc and bwl you couldnt go fire because of imunities and blizzard was the aoe spell you used for aoe, now when you have options with op living flame and living bomb its useless to use, blizz made you also survive with its slow but now u can facetank it with regeneration and other heal spells, basically everything got replaced by runes.... poor frost (i used to be main mage throughtout classic/tbc@@kat-rau.

Will be playing pally main, rogue alt. Very satisfied with paladin overall, but rogues need an aoe for tanking, like fan of knives with a very short CD. Make it a rune for another armor slot. If they make rogues viable tanks, I'll go holy and ret on my paladin instead of prot as I am now

Give Shadow and Affliction critting DoT/channeled spells runes (and the priest one add a ~10% crit boost on that same rune, since we have ~6-7% crit total as a fresh level 60) that lets us crit on **NPCs only**, but not players. Add new runes that add a smartly designed mechanics for Ele, Enh, Shadow, Balance, and whoever else sucks, that just skyrockets their scaling on runic AND vanilla spells. (examples, holy damage Deep Wounds for Rets, some Ignite-esque mechanic for all casters, critting dots/chanelled spells for Afflic/Shadow on only NPCs for pvp balance sake.) For Shadow, gear is essentially cosmetic, there is almost no scaling. If the goal is to bring all specs up to warrior, they need intelligently designed runes that address these core scaling issues directly and enormously buff to these struggling specs. They did it already for Hunters, Rets somewhat, Locks somewhat tho pigeonholed into Destro, Enhance/Lock/Pally tanks, and Feral dps, they can do it for casters too.

What I'd really like to see is 42/41y nameplates as well as Divine Plea for Paladin. There are a lot of classes that really need some support runes that don't necessarily do damage, but enable the player to actually play. Aspect of the Viper might be one such, Tree Form for Druid may be another, Divine Hymn or Hymn of Hope for Priests, Commanding Shout for Warrior, Cloak of Shadows for Rogue, not sure about mage, warlock and shaman tho.

Fire warlock using lake of fire is super super good. If I am fully buffed and lake of fire into a chaos bolt crit I am very likely to pull aggro in bfd. Im talking 2k+ crits on the turtle boss.

I'm a tank warrior, and theres no class that can compete with me on single target threat. The age old tank warrior problem being no threat = no rage = no threat still holds true for aoe though.. but that doesnt matter when even my healer mage can blink forward to pull the next group without a care in the world at this level bracket.

For those of us that invested in twinks during vanilla/classic; we know the different base power level brackets for most classes. Can't wait to see the power leap of all the non-tanking shaman specs and see that rapid rogue scaling. Of course this is classic so warriors will continue to snowball at an acceleration rate similar to gravity.

I'd loved to see a lil bit of more love for Horde by the dev in phase 2. Now that alliance have wind fury, maybe give horde some of those freaking paladin aura ? But mainly for the rune emplacement , the zone design of Ashenval etc. many runes tend to be easier for Alliance to get there hands on. And the one locked behind a single way of obtaining them , often are closer or legit in Alliance zones

After loved healing as Resto Druid in TBC I knew I wanted to play a druid when I saw that Lifebloom rune was in the game. But I was disappointed to learn that they are totaly useless. The only heals I can use i Wild Growth and Healing Touch. And Healing Touch I'm used to only use along Nature's Swiftness to make it instant. Just casting WG is a bit too simple. Feels like you could just put a Druid on follow. Lifebloom healing requires at least some skill to keep it rolling while moving and healing the rest of the raid. So I'm hoping for a Lifebloom boost and Wild Growth nerf for Phase 2. Thanks for Great content WillE!

(posting before watching the video to avoid biases) Personally so far I'm rather underwhelmed by SoD. First, for this being the Season of Discovery, there was very little to discover. I was avoiding spoilers until level 25, and seaching for runes in those first couple of days was probably the best part of SoD. After that, there was impetus to raid, so I had to look up few remaining runes, and I'm glad I did since some of those higher level runes were really cryptic and it would probably take me at least a week to find some of them solo. Still, while the method of discovery was fun, the issue was that there was nothing new to discover. They revealed most of their surprises on the annoucement. I thought that was meant to be just the taste, but nah, I guess that was most of it. Yeah they didn't reveal stuff like raid loot or crafted items, but usually if it's something connected to raiding, you are incentivized to just look it up and stay informed. I was expecting something more akin to Legion secret artifact weapon apperences, that you could work on finding yourself without any obligation to do so. I'm also a bit disappointed with class balancing. With all these new abilities, you know there had to be some balancing, but not too much since things are going to change by the time we hit 60. Yes, we got some urgently needed nerfs, and there is more playable classes now than in the original classic, but bunch of them are still not. I don't think I've seen a single feral tank, shadow priest or holy pala in my raids. Sure, some of them like holy palas will pop off eventually, and giving them a rune to regen mana now doesn't make much sense since it would be pointless on higher level. That said, it wouldn't be the only pointless rune. We got a bunch of them that you're never going to use under any circumstances outside of maybe leveling, before you're able to get the good runes, and there haven't been any serious attempts to change that. What also bothers me is that clash of function in runes that share a slot. One slot can have a core filler damage ability, 3 min cooldown, or passive that completely changes your class. Good luck getting paladins to ever use Seal of Martyrdom as long as it occupies the same slot as Divine Storm (not to mention how it generates almost no mana and cannot be seal twisted).

I hope they update loot tables for dungeons if nothing else. Preferably I'd like some actual new content like quests and new items instead of just one and done generic 'rare elite' slapped in badlands that drops a rune, but I don't think that'll be a thing. As far as Vanilla+ the + is just an asterisk sized thing at this point.

Your take on the rogue leveling was spot on because 98% of the rogues are just skipping remorseless attacks for leveling and asking themselves why they dont do any dmg folks...the talents on wowhead are mostly for 'endgame' raiding/pve - not the leveling phase if you go 5/5 malice, thats on you😂

Talents are utterly irrelevant at this point of leveling, it's all on gear. If you don't regularly go and buy a level appropriate green wep or treat yourself to a decent blue you'll feel it. BFD is the same, outside of the weapons you won't really feel the upgrades, which is why you're better off getting the shitty int mace nobody wants over for example the hood if you're still using barb or something else.

I feel like caster balancing will be very hard to accomplish over physical, I dont see them changing system mechanics outside of runes for casters, which is kind of mix feeling, as that means sacrificing power for class balancing, which i dont think physical classes will run into same issues. 😅 I think what we are seeing to balance casters is the new gear and if 25 BFD is anything to gage the caster gear from, than 40 and 50 will be insane for itemization. The epic staff is already outclassing pre raid bis options at max level. I think the realistic thing we will see is just more SP on gear to push caster in line with physical damage dealers, but this did raise up some peoples concerns of balancing for the older 40 mans once those finally come available. I personally dont really care about 40 mans. I think they will be nostalgia content once we're 60 while focus is set to new stuff, but im still seeing concerns about 40 man content being stunted/easy due to fear of the gear from these earlier phase running rampent. Considering comments from the devs so far about raid sizes/pvp balancing, etc, I feel outside of the planed new content the old stuff is just going to be there and untouched. This might disappoint people but we've had now 3 other chances to experience the old raid content though classic vanilla/SoM/HC. If there are no plans to touch the old raids then thats just how its going to be. Look forward to the new.

after seeing the warrior runes,and most of them being passive i was pretty disappointed. but now after having played with the 80 rage enrage rune and windfury,theyve made warrior gameplay even more PUMP. and with the new way deepwounds works,the rotation and gearing is going to be shifting as well. cant wait for world of warriorcraft again, but its even more fun and better this time. i dont even know what new runes they can give us,the class is already perfect and they somehow have to make it better with additional runes. and just like in classic,there is going to be the classic "warrior in your group vs the warrior in other peoples group" meme,since the difference in bottom warriors and top is far greater now

It is also mostly because people don't know how to deal with priests. Lets say, you have a priest and a rogue, who do you attack? Both? The priest? The rogue? Most people opt for both, so prayer of mending becomes really strong. Generally I am the "shadow" priest, went down to mind flay and run penance + homunculi!

its just how it always is with warriors, they scale the best with skill and gear&comp&buffs. rogues and hunters need no buffs nor brain(especially hunters,you cant fail their rotation and they barely scale with any buffs) so theyre going to be wayyy ahead of warriors for most people,and then warriors hit a breakpoint and go way past everyone else. even in classic it was like this

7:10 fire mage has always been the best spec for dps in classic. leveling as fire is much easier than leveling as frost. Even before sod and the burnout rune when you only had 10 percent crit chance so long as you geared with +fire gear you would 2 shot mobs 2 levels higher than you. I leveled a fire mafe in HC. it was very easy. people always think frost was better dps but it wasnt. Frost was only used in p1 and p2 and the only reason for that was because most bosses were fire immune. raids from ZG on you wouldnt take a frost mage in your grp because they would only output 60 percent what a fire mage could

So what I learned maining an Elemental Shaman this phase... is that you're a melee class. It's better to use talents to improve shocks rather than lightning bolt, and because you want to run dual wield weapons with rockbiter anyway (for higher mana regen from Shamanistic Rage), then you get more damage from melee attacks in between shock and Lava Burst cooldowns than from Lightning Bolt spam.

problem with relying on logs alone is you don't see how it works in practise. Holy paladin can show good numbers because of beacon, but whilst doing poor dmg, going oom and unable to be useful at quickly healing off any of the important mechanics in the raid. BoK is already given by hunter too. From my experience, if you want to be actually useful in raid, you are best to reroll as a priest because it's night and day difference. And from a quick Google search, that appears to be what most other healer paladins have done

You can just melee with righteousness up and bring both tanks to full with 1 or 2 holy light casts. You also have buffs and kicks. It's really not so bad.

when rogue tanking in dungeons unless dps heavily outgears you, you ae fine up to 4 mobs but then again in vannila it was the same for any tank For paladins Protection build is - sort of pointless - unless you are stacking "thorns" damage and doing DM or WC whole dungeon pulls or half dungeon pulls. There is not point where retri ( divine storm+avenging shield) is not enought

Of note with Shadow Priest is that they get a new rank of SW:P at 26 and a new rank of MF at 28, which would likely double their damage if they got them.

Hellfire is going to suffer in the same way shadow and frost bolts are now. Its rank 2 is lvl 42.

Even rank 1 hellfire is still very strong at level 40. With destruction talents and level appropriate spell power, incinerate and lake of fire, it's capable of over 800 dps on just 5 targets.

The biggest mistake that Blizzard ever made was not nerfing Warriors to fuck back in vanilla and this means that Classic, SoM and SoD are all built on this fundamentally broken premise that warriors should be the best dps and the best tank and can achieve close to both at the same time. The toxic legacy of whoever in the management team at Blizzard believed and followed Furor's Warrior Manifesto holds true to this day and it needs a fundamental overhaul to make the vanilla game actually work in any iteration we;ve seen so far.

Warlock is my main too and im absolutely loving the Destruction build. Im usually top DPS behind the Hunter and Warrior DPS so these stats make sense.
