At around 29:25-29:30, the ordinance expert talks about how Fawkes would likely have been killed in the blast, as he wouldn't have been able to escape the blast radius in time. However, that's not what Fawkes and Catesby had planned. Fawkes had fabricated a slow-burning fuse which would have given him some eight hours to make his escape. Now, he was planning to stay within the vicinity of the chamber, in order to ignite the powder more directly if the fuse had failed. If necessary, he was willing to die, but a suicide mission was not Plan A...that was Plan B or even C.
