Hey everybody! Thanks for watching this video on "How RUNAWAY Defines Kanye West". This is something I've been wanting to do forever! Shoutout to @WookieeAlt for suggesting this topic a while back. I've made 207 videos and now I finally made one about my favorite song ever. Between the materialism, the excess, the ego, and all of those things battling with Kanye's conscious -- the stuff that makes him want to sympathize/empathize with those around him, the reasons to start a family instead of making a goliath of an album...everything is just so good. From the samples to the beat, the vocoder guitar solo to the short film, and everything in between. Hope ya liked this! Big stuff coming soon.

To me the opening piano is the girl’s heartbeat. It’s clean and pure, and then the distorted ugliness is Kanye coming in to ruin and pervert it. I always took that opening piece of music as a hyper-critical view of how he seems himself in the hearts of others; it’s all good until he comes in and fucks it up.

I'm a classically trained musician with almost 2 decades of experience playing, performing, learning, and teaching music. I even spent years at the collegiate level intensely studying, analyzing, and performing some of the greatest pieces of western music ever written. But anyone with an ounce of musical sense and appreciation for it can sit down and hear it: MBDTF is a masterpiece. I don't exaggerate when I say it may be the single best musical work of the 21st century so far. And honestly, its impact is reinforced and further cemented by Kanye's offstage antics and persona. His mental health is unpredictable and his stunts are infamous. This album, however, lays out the foundation for everything that has happened since its release in 2010. It's a story about an artist at the highest level of stardom, wealth, skill, and success who realizes it's all hollow. It's lonely at the top. He's being ripped apart by the demons inside of him. The destructive nature of his lifestyle, mental illness, fame, and western society is enabling his worst qualities. His mind is breaking and he knows it. The decline is inevitable. He's his own worst enemy. He can't fill a certain hole in his heart. MBDTF is the Citizen Kane of rap albums. Its story and depth are incredible.

Wow what a beautiful analysis… recent events in mind, it’s quite heartbreaking to see that clash with himself and seeing him lose to his demons. It really feels like he’s ripping himself apart, like he’s purposely trying to destroy his public image. It shows that he’s even more fragmented than he was before. Life hasn’t been well to him, and he’s projecting that anger. Like he wants to confirm the demons are right, like he wants to prove to himself that he’s still worthless despite his successes

Glad to feel vindicated (and instructed) on Ye's behalf by someone far more skilled and trained. I've only ever had my intuition and instincts with art and music, but they've served me well over time, and KW piqued my interest from the beginning, while worrying about the trajectory his inner fire would take him on. 🔥

I love how they talk about his mental health and stuff when in reality he's fine, it's so stupid to believe that he's been having a mental breakdown for 6 YEARS since 2016, not only was he drugged out of his mind and involuntarily institutionalized they misdiagnosed him to make him look crazy so people don't take him seriously. He has been taken out of context and misinterpreted so many times like with the slavery is a choice comment, he wasn't talking about 1800 thousands slavery like with the chains and slave owners, he says its a choice because slavery hasn't ended, he thinks contracts are slavery, they take your some of your rights and freedom which added up to why he got out of the Addidas contract. (I have much more to say but kanye thinks and speaks differently, just cause he says one thing it doesn't mean the other, like with "I love hitler" he's not stupid he knows that will get people mad but he never meant he liked his actions he's simply following his religion which tells him to love everybody and separate sin from man. In that same interview he said he loves the Jewish also, expect we all forgot about that didn't we? Because the media thrives off making him look as bad as possible)

I take the distorted vocals at the end as Kanye pleading for help, but because he’s a celebrity, nobody really hears him for his struggles, they only hear him for his music. They distort his pleas, but somehow you can still just make out the chorus in it. So it’s like trying to grasp onto what someone is saying without hearing it. Phenomenal song 10/10

Kinda liberated and free. Brought to place were I can look at myself and and finally find the real me, and be that person with no one watching. And it's incredible. That's why it's one of my favorite songs. But sometimes it made me feel the complete opposite. You guys are just speaking from the perspective of your generation. This song and Welcome to the Black Parade come to mind for me as well, but the fact that those songs of the same era come to our minds isn't a coincidence. There are probably plenty of songs which can be recognized by the opening note. Still cool though

The piano at the beginning is also a reference to a the play that is repeated throughout Kubrick’s last film Eyes Wide Shut. A film that delves into the fundamental elements of marriage and infidelity - a theme also discussed in runaway !!

The "Look At Ya!" kinda changes into "Who Got You?" towards the end of every repetition of the sample. To me, that adds to the song, as the "Who Got You?" seems to be referencing to the girl Kanye wants to run away from him.

As a huge Kanye fan who ranks MBDTF as the greatest album ever created this video hit me hard Runaway is one of the most simplistic yet grandiose, arrogant and depressing , epic and heartbreaking song ever as long as you know Ye and his incredible journey The lyrics might seem raunchy and cringey but for me they are some of the most naked ,honest and raw words ever recorded by the most beautiful maniac in the music industry

do you have to know and appreciate kanye's journey to fully appreciate the song? because i don't care about kanye's journey at all and the song is very unremarkable to me, maybe that's why

I always thought the 15 Es at the start were supposed to represent that everyone thinks they know who Kanye is ( they hear the first few E's and think "this is what this song is gonna be" and this then gets proved right with more E's . But if you stick around, you will see there is more to kanye. The highs and lows (This is shown by the jumps in octaves)

kanye, the man who had that dark fantasy, a gorgeous interpretention of the hidden power he has behind all of the lights, a monster coming alive who in the end is so appalled with things he knows, the man who felt in love with evil even knowing it was the devil in a new dress, still he can’t runaway from the hell of a life he is to live, my man knows love but how could one love living a blame game, a poor genius lost in the world asking himself, who will survive in america

Runaway is the song that made me fall in love with Kanye, I was listening to the album as I was going to bed and I heard that beautiful into and it instantly woke me up I had to hear the whole song and then after that I was hooked. No other artist has ever grabbed my attention the same way Kanye has and Kanye is the only artist where I actually enjoy every single one of his albums. Even the newer ones

Its Late December 2010, Christmas time. Week 7 in a hospital bed in another city away from my family and friends, weighting only 109lbs from the 180lb I was 7 weeks earlier. Surgery doesn't tend to schedule around that time so its pretty empty and very quiet, even got a single room becasue of this. Now there is only two things you don't get in a hospital: Vanity & Sleep (not to be confused with infinite rest) I find myself awake at all hours of the night and that's when the music channel actually played music and Runaway was always playing. I connect to this song on another level. I hear the sadness & vulnerability of this song. My vulnerability was more physical but I connect with it all the same. It's unbelievable how much some music helps when people are at their worst.

The album as a whole is probably one of my favorites by him. The song runaway….pure musical masterpiece. I’ve always listened to full albums under large stereo headphones on the first run. Kanye’s albums always have extra little bits that you don’t hear just via speaker. The first time I listened to runaway brought me to tears. So vulnerable…almost heart wrenching.

I first listened to MBDTF on January 1st of 2012 on the bus going back to my hometown after I broke up with my then 5 years girlfriend, the entire album made me reflect on my life choices. Then I got to Runaway and oh boy, I was sobing for the rest of the trip. There was something funny though, even though that song crushed me, after it finished I felt relieved, comfortable for some reason. When music makes you feel this feeling rollercoaster you know is something truly special.
