There’s no better way to learn about the memory test for Alzheimers and dementia than seeing an example memory test in action with a psychiatrist.
What we do know about the brain is that it gets less sharp and productive with age. In this clip from our Alzheimers and dementia series, the doctor asks Kyle example questions from a mental screening test for dementia called "the mini cognitive assessment."
This leader in psychiatry performs an example memory test on Kyle and afterward, Kyle and Dr. Sportelli chat about how spotting the signs and symptoms looks for the different stages of the disease.
Many people have aging loved ones who "forget." This screening session for Alzheimers is integral in seeing if that forgetfulness could be a sign of Alzheimers or dementia.

When I was around 54 (7 years ago), I had special cognitive testing done by a neurologist for early Alzheimers. It was very involved and took a total of about 3 hours. I felt like I did poorly on certain parts. Conclusion: No Alzheimers, but I have a short attention span. He gave me a heavy duty multivitamin and some other supplements to keep me focused. Also told me it's OK if I can't find my keys, but it's not ok if someone else finds them in the kitchen cupboard or medicine chest.

@@andrewjames2617 You would want to increase anything that helps with oxygen transportation. Iron is good. But of course not much. Coq10 which is good for heart and circulation. B6 helps for improved sleep and memory recollection. Magnesium good for muscle relaxation. Good form of omegas. Hemp Seed extract is great for that. CBD oil full spectrum is an overall healing oil due to our very own endocannabinoid system which helps heal and balance our system out. Chaga, Reishi, Cordiceps, Lions Mane mushroom supplements which are extremely important for your overall health especially your brain which all these mushrooms have been proven to protect, support and balance brain as a whole. And continue to take personal memory testing. Exercise!! Drink lots of water, balanced diet, and enough rest/sleep. Meditation is essential.

I have to paint a picture in my head to remember things. Then I'm good to go. I pictured the ball rolling down the sidewalk and wobbling side to side because a safety pin got stuck in it and it couldn't roll straight. When you have ADHD you come up with all kinds of odd ways to remember details because about 2 seconds later you get distracted but something totally off topic.

Having been an elementary math teacher, it is sadly becoming less relevant to teach time in regards to analog clocks (even with Common Core, which is a joke). Yes time calculation is taught, but the average American youth "learns" and forgets. Honestly, if you asked them how to even read an analog clock they are helpless. So a test such as this, when they mature, will prove to be VERY problematic ijs

Hey Princess Adora... I have PTSD and thought I would share a couple of things that came to mind when I read your post. I have had PTSD since I was 10 and it was compounded when I served in the military. My PTSD manifested in a constant state of hyper-vigilance and my fight, flight, or freeze response was on 24/7. Until... Before i tell you about the 'until' let me just say that a significant amount of my mental capacity took on the responsibility of dealing with my PTSD symptoms. Which definitely affected my capacity in other cognitive skills/task like memory. In 2012 I entered a program for veterans and for the first time in my life became aware that I have PTSD (I was 42). I embraced the program with all of my energy and started trying new things above and beyond the program. Including: mindfulness meditation, psychotherapy, journaling, crossfit, riding a bike, ballet (haha... it was a kick), yoga. Doing all of these new things really engaged my mind. If you know anything about neuroplasticity you'll understand that doing new things, like this, has your brain engaged and actually changing physically. So all of these experiences had an impact. However, without question the habit and skill that had the greatest positive impact on my PTSD (reducing symptoms) was/is mindfulness meditation. If you don't know anything about it I would be happy to answer any questions you have. There are plenty of resources out there. Here is the thing... For 32 years I was in a constant state of hyper-vigilance 24/7 365. It had been with me for so long that I thought it was normal and everybody dealt with stuff like that. The cool thing is that switch that resides in the amygdala area of the brain finally went off at some point in 2012. For me that is a miracle. Guess what else my memory is wicked good now. No kidding... One more thing. Stress is the biggest memory killer in the world. I sense you may be a bit stressed about PTSD, your memory, and the future. Someone wise told me once "Never borrow trouble". I try to remember that when I start worrying about what might happen, imagining trouble before it comes, or just being in the future all the time that means my life is passing me by while I am somewhere else. I try to stay in the present. Maybe you can too... Mindfulness meditation helps with that too. Oh and if you are concerned about such things mindfulness meditation has been researched and qualifies as a evidence-based therapy. Feel to respond back if you want or not. Either way God bless you. Be well.

@@kennethlynch2907 I has question. Can PTSD cause dementia-like symptoms? I am a teen(15) and was wondering if I was too young to have dementia. I can remember some things but it seemed that over time, I started having panic attacks and thought that I was losing my memories. I also get to seem distracted over the little things and not focus on what other people say, I forget where I place my things and also forget what I am learning in school and lose my sense of coordination. I seem to panic over reading into symptoms of AD and dementia and other things that involve loss of memory and I feel confused and scared I may have something wrong going on in my brain. Is there a chance I may have it at this age or is it my mind that is making these symptoms or do I just have cognitive impairment because of stress and anxiety I am currently now going through? Because I also seem to not have pleasure in the daily things I do like I used to but I still remember the things I liked to do but don't find the fun in them anymore.

@@ducky239 Hi -first let me say that I empathize and have compassion for you and what you are going through. I sense your overwhelm and things may seem a little hopeless to you right now. I want you to know that is normal and you are going to be ok. Remember "This too shall pass"... The one thing we can count is change. So that brings us to you and what you want to change. I am not a Psychologist or Psychiatrist and can't answer your questions about dimentia because I don't know enough about you or the subject. I do have some advice for you though coming from a person who cares and has been in a place similar to where you are now. First, I recommend that you see a professional. If you are in school check with your counselor they should provide a service to their students. If you work there should be a service your employer provides and your insurance might cover some of the cost too. There are also some online options too and they say therapy is just as effective over skype as it is in person. This one step will make a huge difference for you and help you to clear away those things that areas seemingly demanding your attention, like 'do I have dementia' and all the other worries you have, so you can focus in on life moment by moment and start moving towards a better you and life. DO THIS! I promise you won't regret it. Second, look into mindfulness meditation. When you start meditating it may seem like not much as happening or it may feel real uncomfortable or both. Whatever happens let that be ok and stick with it for at least 15 minutes (or 30 if you can manage it) a day for 30 days. The issues you are having with focus will get better through the practice of meditation. Let me know if you have questions. There is more I want to say but I am short on time. Check back in with me if you want. I would be happy to answer the questions i can and guide you to someone to answer the questions I can't. Try to take it easy. You are going to be ok. Instead of focusing on all of your problems start looking for solutions to those problems and more importantly start taking action on those solutions. You can and will get better if you do this. God bless and be well.

This is what they had my husband do but this is not what is happening to his memory. So where do you start because my 51 year old husband keeps forgetting things that he has said or been told within a few minutes. What doctors does he need to see? Another thing is that this has been going on for a year 1/2. We talked to a neurologist but he didn't believe what I was telling him. At that time my husband was not really aware of the forgetfulness. But now they are seeing it where he works and others are telling my husband about him forgetting things. He's also changing in his personality as well.

Good video! I know it's good because I passed the test ;) However, Kyle only had to remember the words for 35 seconds, so maybe this wasn't the best demonstration of that aspect of the test. But it got the concepts across! On a different note, you might want to get your makeup artist and lighting crew together to review the final results. Your faces look jaundiced (especially Kyle's) , and the makeup doesn't show up evenly. Plus, if you make up the face, you should always make up the back of the hands as well. Just a couple of tips from a former makeup artist (one who's maybe too detail oriented in the comment section)!
