Dust from the Sahara desert is picked up and transported by winds across the globe every year. This dust not only affect human life, but also shapes weather and sustain many of earth’s ecosystems. ThePrint’s Sandhya Ramesh explains how Saharan dust rises as plumes from the desert and forms thick layers in our atmosphere, driving these processes.

This was amazing video! I've always/generally cursed Sahara desert, but now my mind is boggled having known that Saharan dust helps generate half of Earth's oxygen! (Amazon and Phytoplankton) 😅! Keep up this series! Pl dont stop due to low views!

Mind blown! The subtle information about how the sharan dust provides iron to phytoplankton thereby sustaining the marine ecosystems and similarly of phosphorus replenishing the Amazon soil is so amazing. I'm hooked to this series, please keep up.

Brilliant video! Great presentation! Thanks a lot for making us smarter. :) Would be interesting to see a video on Indoor Air Quality, when 90% time of our lives we spend indoor and breath air much more polluted than the outdoors. Happy to contribute more. Would also encourage people to watch ‘Connected’ on Netflix. The 3rd episode ‘Dust’ is very interesting and talks about similar concepts of this video.

I thought that it was due to environmental damage and deforestation. But my perspective got to change. For the same, I am having a question whether the expansion of desert is good or bad for nature and for forests as well as soil erosion which is faced by the environment or not?

Hi. While environmental damage does occur everywhere around us because of human activity, it is clear with existing data that these processes are natural and not a result of human activity. However human modification of land with have consequences for sure. - S.Ramesh
